Start with the website’s own theme switch. If it has no dark option, set your browser or device to dark so sites that support the prefers-color-scheme standard can follow it. A site that ignores that preference will stay light unless you use a dark-mode extension or another forced-color tool.
Choose the right dark-mode method
Dark mode can mean three different things: a dark browser interface, a site’s own dark theme, or forced recoloring of pages that were designed only for light mode. These approaches differ in coverage, visual accuracy, control and accessibility.
| Method | What it changes | Coverage | Fidelity and control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website switch | The site’s CSS, images and components | That site only | Usually the best visual result; often remembers a per-site choice |
| Browser or device dark setting | Browser chrome and the preference sent to websites | Browser UI plus sites honoring prefers-color-scheme |
One global setting; pages that do not support it remain light |
| Dark-mode extension | Recolors pages after they load | Most sites, including those with no dark theme | Variable fidelity; requires permissions and per-site tuning |
Use the site control first. It can preserve intended contrast for logos, photographs, charts, forms and embedded content. Use the browser setting next, and an extension only when a page still does not provide a usable dark presentation.
Turn on a website’s built-in dark theme
- Open the site’s settings, profile menu or appearance menu.
- Look for labels such as Theme, Appearance, Color scheme or a sun/moon icon.
- Choose Dark, or choose System/Automatic if you want it to follow your device.
- Reload the page if colors do not change immediately. Some sites apply the setting only after the next navigation.
If you use more than one browser, this preference may be stored separately in each account or browser profile.

Chrome desktop
Make Chrome itself dark
- Open a new tab.
- Select Customize Chrome.
- Open Appearance.
- Choose Dark or Device.
This darkens Chrome’s homepage, toolbar, settings and some other browser pages. It does not rewrite the CSS of every website. A site must implement prefers-color-scheme (or its own switch) to change its page automatically.
Chrome on Android
- Tap More (the three dots).
- Tap Settings, then Theme.
- Choose Dark, Light or System Default.
System Default follows Android’s theme and may also be tied to Battery Saver, depending on the device configuration.
Chrome on iPhone or iPad
Chrome for iOS follows the device appearance. Open the iPhone or iPad Settings, choose Display & Brightness, and select Dark (or enable Automatic for a schedule). Chrome’s own guidance directs iOS users to this device setting.
Firefox desktop
- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
- Choose General.
- Scroll to Appearance, then find Website appearance.
- Select Automatic System, Light or Dark.
Automatic System lets websites follow the operating system or Firefox theme. Dark requests a dark presentation even when the operating system is light, but only pages that support the preference will respond.
Microsoft Edge
- Open Settings and more (the three dots).
- Select Settings, then Appearance.
- Under Overall appearance, select Dark.
As in Chrome, this changes Edge’s interface and communicates a preference to compatible websites; it cannot force arbitrary page styles.

Set dark mode on the operating system
Windows
Open Settings > Personalization > Colors. Set Choose your mode to Dark, or use Custom if you want Windows and apps dark while keeping desktop apps light. Browsers set to follow the system can then expose the dark preference to websites.
macOS
Open System Settings > Appearance and choose Dark or Auto. Safari and browsers configured to follow the system can pass that preference to supporting sites.
Android and iOS
Use the device’s Display or Display & Brightness settings and select a dark appearance. A browser’s System Default option will normally follow it. Schedules, Battery Saver and managed-device policies can switch the setting back, so check those when the change seems temporary.
Why a page stays white
The browser theme is not the page theme
Dark browser chrome affects tabs, menus and settings. Website content is controlled by the site’s CSS. Only pages that detect prefers-color-scheme: dark or expose their own theme control can reliably change.
The site supports only part of its interface
A page may darken its main article but leave an embedded checkout, video player, documentation frame or third-party login light. Those components are rendered by separate origins and may not receive the same preference.

- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
The page has hard-coded colors
Older or poorly themed pages may use fixed white backgrounds, image-based text or low-contrast colors. Browser support for color-scheme behavior reached major milestones in Chrome 98 (February 2022), Edge 98 (February 2022), Firefox 96 (January 2022) and Safari 13 (September 2019); those dates describe platform support, not the quality of any individual site.
Check a site with DevTools
- Open the browser’s developer tools and open the command menu or rendering controls.
- Find the Emulate CSS media feature prefers-color-scheme option.
- Set it to dark, then reload.
If the page changes in DevTools but not during normal browsing, your browser or operating-system preference is not being applied as expected. If it does not change even when emulated, the site likely has no dark styles.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Force dark mode with an extension
Install a well-maintained dark-mode extension from your browser’s official store when the site has no usable theme. Extensions can invert or replace colors, inject CSS and maintain per-site exceptions.
- Review permissions: broad “read and change data on all websites” access is powerful; install only an extension you trust.
- Check privacy terms: prefer tools that explain whether page content is processed locally or sent to a server.
- Whitelist problem sites: banking, medical, design and web-app pages may need their original colors.
- Inspect media: automatic recoloring can make photographs, charts, code blocks, maps and video controls unreadable.
- Test forms and focus states: links, disabled controls, validation messages and keyboard focus must remain distinguishable.
Safari web extensions can declare both light and dark schemes in their own interface CSS, but that declaration does not guarantee that every website will be recolored correctly.
Accessibility and readability checks
- Verify normal text and large text have clear contrast against the new background.
- Do not rely on color alone for errors, status, selected tabs or chart series.
- Look at images with transparent backgrounds; a logo designed for white may disappear on near-black.
- Zoom to 200% and test keyboard navigation to catch hidden outlines and clipped controls.
- Keep a light exception for documents, spreadsheets or dashboards whose colors carry data meaning.
Troubleshooting checklist
Chrome is dark but the website is still white
Confirm the site has a theme switch. Then verify Chrome is set to Dark or Device, reload, and test with DevTools emulation. If the emulated dark preference has no effect, use an extension or the site’s own accessibility options.

Dark mode keeps turning off
Check whether the browser is using a temporary profile, the site blocks cookies, or the operating system’s schedule or Battery Saver is changing the theme. Sign in when the site stores preferences in an account.

Only some elements are dark
Inspect embedded frames, third-party widgets and shadowed components. They may have separate stylesheets or origins. A per-site extension rule can help, but excluding the widget may be safer than forcing unreadable colors.
Text or images look inverted
Disable the extension for that domain, switch from “invert” to a CSS-based mode, or add an exception for image-heavy pages. Recheck charts, code samples and logos after every rule change.

FAQ
Can one setting force every website into dark mode?
No. A browser or device setting only affects sites that honor the web preference. A forced-color extension is needed for pages that ignore it.
Does dark mode save battery?
Potential savings depend on the display technology, brightness and the application. Dark mode should be chosen primarily for comfort and readability rather than a guaranteed battery result.
Will private browsing remember my choice?
Usually not after the private window closes. Site themes stored in cookies or local storage can be cleared with the private session.
Can a website override my browser preference?
Yes. A site can provide its own light-only design or let its manual theme choice override the system preference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I schedule dark mode automatically?
Use your operating system’s Auto or scheduled appearance option, then set the browser to follow the system. Individual sites may still keep their own schedule or manual override.
Why do screenshots sometimes show a light page?
The capture environment may not receive your local browser preference. Set the site’s theme explicitly or pass a dark-mode, CSS or script option in the capture tool before taking the screenshot.
The Bottom Line
Use the site’s own dark switch first, then the browser or device setting. If the page ignores prefers-color-scheme, an extension is the practical fallback.
