Google Docs has no separate screenshot command. Capture the screen with your operating system, then place the image in your document with Insert > Image > Upload from computer. You can also paste a clipboard capture or drag a saved image into the page. The steps below cover selected-area and full-screen captures, Chromebook shortcuts, formatting, accessibility, and common failures.
The basic workflow
- Capture the required area. Select only the dialog, paragraph, chart, or toolbar you need when possible. A partial capture is easier to read and keeps unrelated information out of the document.
- Open the Google Doc and click at the location where the image belongs.
- Insert the file. Choose Insert > Image > Upload from computer, select the screenshot, and wait for it to appear.
- Use paste instead if the screenshot is already on the clipboard: press Ctrl+V on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command+V on macOS.
- Drag and drop a saved image from your desktop or file manager into the document.
Google Docs also offers Stock & web, Drive & Photos, Camera, and By URL under Insert > Image. Those sources are useful when the picture already exists online or in Drive; uploading the local screenshot is usually the most dependable route.
How to capture the screen before inserting it
Windows
Use the Windows screenshot utility to select a region or capture the complete screen. Save the result if you want a reusable file, or copy it to the clipboard for immediate pasting. The exact shortcut and notification vary by Windows edition and keyboard, but the Google Docs insertion steps do not change.
Mac
Use the macOS screenshot utility to capture a selected portion or the entire display. Save the image, then upload it through Insert > Image > Upload from computer, or copy the capture and press Command+V in Docs.

Chromebook
Google documents these ChromeOS shortcuts:
- Full screenshot: press Ctrl + Show Windows.
- Partial screenshot: press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then click and drag over the area to capture.
- External keyboard without a Show Windows key: Google’s screenshot guide lists Ctrl+Shift+F5 as an alternative for screenshot features.
After the capture, select the saved image in Insert > Image > Upload from computer, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
Insert a screenshot and choose its source
Upload from your computer
In the document, select Insert > Image > Upload from computer. Pick a PNG, JPEG, or other image file supported by Docs. This method works regardless of which operating system created the capture.
Paste from the clipboard
Clipboard paste is fastest when you do not need to keep a separate file. Click the desired insertion point first, then use Ctrl+V (Windows or ChromeOS) or Command+V (Mac). In some browsers, keyboard shortcuts are more reliable than a clipboard option in the context menu because browser security can restrict menu-based clipboard access.
Drag and drop
Open your desktop or file manager beside the browser, then drag the saved screenshot onto the document. Google also supports dragging an image from a website into Docs. Check that you are dropping it on the page rather than on a browser tab or another application.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Resize, position, and format the screenshot
Click the inserted image to reveal its controls. Drag a corner handle to resize it without distorting the proportions. For precise adjustments, open Image options; Google provides controls for size, rotation, transparency, brightness, and contrast.
Choose how text flows
Docs offers these image layout choices:
- In line: treats the screenshot like a large character in the paragraph.
- Wrap text: lets surrounding text flow around the image.
- Break text: keeps text in blocks above and below the image.
- Behind text and In front of text: layer the image relative to the text.
Wrap text, positioning, and related controls require Pages mode. They are not available in Pageless mode. If those buttons are missing, switch the document to Pages mode before changing the layout.
Add useful alternative text
Select the screenshot, open Image options, and choose Alt text. Describe the information a reader needs, such as “Insert Image menu showing Upload from computer.” Do not write “screenshot” alone when the image contains instructions or data. Google lists Ctrl+Alt+Y for other platforms and Command+Option+Y on Mac as keyboard shortcuts for alt text.
Choose the right capture method
| Need | Best approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One dialog, paragraph, or control | Selected-area capture | Removes unrelated content and makes the important detail larger. |
| The entire document window | Full-screen or full-window capture | Preserves context, including the toolbar and surrounding content. |
| Fastest insertion | Clipboard capture, then paste | No file-selection step is required. |
| Archiving or reuse | Save a file, then upload | Keeps a copy outside the document. |
| Text beside the image | Wrap text in Pages mode | Allows surrounding paragraphs to flow around the screenshot. |
Before capturing, close private tabs, notifications, passwords, and unrelated windows. A selected region is not only faster to read; it also reduces accidental disclosure of information that does not belong in the document.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot will not paste
First click inside the document body, not the browser address bar or a comment field. Retry the platform shortcut. If a menu-based paste is unavailable, use the keyboard shortcut. When that still fails, save the capture as a file and use Insert > Image > Upload from computer.
The image is in the wrong place
Click the paragraph or blank line where the image should go before inserting it. Afterward, change the layout from In line to Wrap text or another option. If layout controls are absent, change the document from Pageless to Pages mode.
The screenshot looks blurry
Capture the smallest useful region at the display’s native resolution and avoid enlarging it dramatically in Docs. If text is still unreadable, recapture at a larger scale or split one wide capture into focused images.
Upload is unavailable or does nothing
Confirm that you are editing the document rather than viewing it, and that the browser has access to the local file picker. Rename the file without unusual characters, retry in a current browser, or use clipboard paste. A temporary network or Drive problem can also interrupt insertion; keep the local file and try again after reloading the document.

If you need a screenshot of a public web page rather than a live Google Docs editing window, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all options. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://docs.google.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://docs.google.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Frequently asked questions
Can I capture only part of a Google Doc?
Yes. Use your operating system’s selected-area capture, then insert the resulting image. This is preferable when the reader needs one paragraph, control, or dialog rather than the entire window.
Does Google Docs automatically save a pasted screenshot?
Once the image appears in the document, Docs saves it as part of the document through its normal autosave process. Keep the original file separately if you need an independent copy.
Why are image-wrapping options missing?
Those controls require Pages mode. Pageless documents support the image itself but not the same wrapping and fixed-position controls.
