Use a Google Play screenshot generator to compose accurate captures of your current app, export files that meet Play’s limits, and prepare separate assets for each device category. Google Play requires at least two screenshots across device types for a listing, while its recommendation guidance favors larger sets: four 1080-pixel-or-higher images for apps and three for games. The safest workflow is to capture the real interface with Android Studio or an Android device, compose only truthful supporting text, validate every dimension and format, then manage the files in Play Console’s Asset Library.
What Google Play requires
Google’s preview-asset guidance distinguishes publishing requirements from recommendations intended to improve eligibility for screenshot-led promotional surfaces. Treat the mandatory limits as a validation checklist, not as a design target.

The two-screenshot minimum is not a recommendation to stop at two. A small set can leave important features unexplained and may not qualify for every promotional placement. Build a coherent set, then check the current Play Console validation messages before publishing because Google can change requirements.
Choose the device categories before designing
A single phone layout does not satisfy every Play destination. Google lists phones, 7-inch and 10-inch tablets, Chromebooks, Android TV, Wear OS, Android Automotive OS, and Android XR. Create an asset plan for the categories your app actually supports.

Phones, tablets, and Chromebooks
Capture the interface at representative aspect ratios and keep controls legible when Play reduces or crops the image. Do not stretch a phone capture to pretend it is a tablet or Chromebook experience; capture the responsive layout on that class of device or emulator.
Wear OS
Wear OS screenshots must show only the app interface. Do not add a watch frame or decorative graphics. Use a 1:1 ratio with a minimum of 384 × 384 pixels.
Android TV
TV apps need at least one TV screenshot and a TV banner. Design for ten-foot viewing: large text, clear focus states, and no tiny phone UI pasted into a wide canvas.
Android Automotive OS
Requirements depend on the app category. Where screenshots are required and supplied, Google specifies at least two 800 × 1280 portrait images and two 1024 × 768 landscape images, using generic system UI. Confirm the category-specific rule in Play Console for your app.

Android XR
XR listings require four to eight screenshots in an 8:5 ratio, up to 8 MB each. Google recommends 3840 × 2400 and sets a minimum of 1920 × 1200. Keep spatial UI and depth cues understandable after reduction.
What to show in the images
Use current, genuine in-app or in-game screens and focus on the core experience users receive after installation. The first three images should be UI-forward. Google allows a connected visual style across uploads, but decorative treatment must not hide the product.

- Show real functionality: use completed states and representative content rather than empty placeholders.
- Keep copy factual: taglines are optional and should occupy no more than 20% of an image when used.
- Avoid prohibited promotion: do not claim rankings, awards, testimonials, prices, discounts, “Best,” “#1,” “Top,” or download milestones.
- Design for surfaces beyond the detail page: screenshots may appear in search and home surfaces, be resized, or be cropped.
Before export, compare every screen with the current production build. A screenshot of a removed feature is misleading even if the file technically passes validation.
Capture the source screenshots
Android Studio
Run the release candidate or a production-equivalent build in the emulator, navigate to each key flow, and use Android Studio’s screenshot control. Capture each device profile separately so density, typography, and responsive behavior are authentic. Name files with device and sequence information, such as phone_portrait_01.webp (convert to an accepted format before upload) or tablet_landscape_02.png.

On many Android devices, hold Power and Volume-down simultaneously to capture a screenshot. Transfer the original file without messaging-app compression, then crop only to remove system chrome that is not part of the app. Repeat on a tablet, TV emulator, watch, car emulator, or XR device when those categories matter.
Do not use framed device art for listing screenshots
Android’s Device Art Generator can wrap a capture in device artwork for websites and other promotional material. Its documentation explicitly warns: “Do not use graphics created here in your feature image or screenshots for your Google Play store listing, using the screenshot alone without framing is recommended.” A decorative phone mockup can therefore be useful on a landing page but is the wrong output for the Play screenshot slot.
Compose a compliant screenshot set
- Inventory flows. List the three to five actions that define the app, then map one clear state to each image.
- Pick a primary orientation. Use portrait for phone-first apps and landscape for games or wide interfaces; keep the recommended dimensions consistent within a set.
- Place copy sparingly. Put a short, truthful caption in an uncluttered area. Keep it below the 20% guideline and never let it cover controls.
- Check readability at thumbnail size. Preview the set at the approximate size users will see in search or a carousel.
- Export per category. Do not reuse a phone canvas for Wear OS, TV, Automotive, or XR when those categories have different ratios or content rules.
- Validate files. Confirm JPEG or opaque 24-bit PNG, dimensions from 320 to 3840 px, long side no more than twice the short side, and file sizes within category limits.
Upload and organize assets in Play Console
After creation, open your app in Play Console and use the listing’s graphics area and Asset Library. The Asset Library centralizes graphics for the main listing, custom listings, experiments, and events. You can upload from a computer or Google Drive, crop a new copy, search and filter by aspect ratio, language, asset type, use, and tag, and create tags for an app version, campaign, or theme.

Keep original captures and exported listing files separate. Store the build number, device category, orientation, language, and date in your internal filename or tag. When a release changes navigation or branding, replace the affected sequence rather than leaving an obsolete image in a custom listing.

Play rejects the file format
Re-export as JPEG or opaque 24-bit PNG. Remove alpha transparency and avoid an editor’s indexed or 32-bit PNG preset.

The dimensions fail validation
Check both width and height, not only the headline resolution. Every side must be 320–3840 px and the long side must be no more than twice the short side. Resize the canvas without stretching UI, then inspect text at thumbnail size.
The image looks blurry
Capture at the target density instead of enlarging a small device screenshot. For recommendation-oriented app assets, start at 1080 × 1920 portrait or 1920 × 1080 landscape.
A device category is missing
Add the category’s required asset, such as a TV screenshot and banner, Wear OS 1:1 interface-only art, or the specified Automotive and XR sets. A generic phone image cannot substitute for every category.
The design is rejected for promotional content
Remove rankings, awards, testimonials, prices, discounts, and download claims. Replace them with a concise description of an actual feature.
The screenshot is outdated
Compare it with the release build and update the corresponding Asset Library copy. Tag assets by version so an experiment or custom listing does not continue showing an old flow.

Capturing with Android Studio or owned test devices has no screenshot-service fee, but labor grows with device categories, languages, and release frequency. Can I upload screenshots with a phone frame?
For Google Play listing screenshots, use the screenshot alone without framing. Device frames may be suitable for other promotional graphics, but Android’s Device Art guidance says not to use its framed output in Play feature images or screenshots.
How many screenshots should a game listing have?
Google’s recommendation is at least three images in a consistent 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait format at the specified minimum sizes. The publishing minimum is still two screenshots across device types.
Does Play Console create screenshots for me?
No. Its Asset Library stores, crops, searches, filters, tags, and reuses graphics. You must capture and compose the source images elsewhere.
Should every screenshot use the same language?
For a localized listing, prepare language-appropriate assets and organize them with Asset Library filters and tags. Do not place text in one language on a listing intended for another audience.
