There is no authoritative, universal ranking of MCP servers by popularity or quality. This shortlist instead matches ten useful MCP options to developer tasks, from GitHub and browser automation to databases and infrastructure. For a first install, choose the server that fits one real workflow, verify it supports your MCP client, and grant it only the access that workflow needs.
The 10 MCP picks, matched to developer tasks
The table is a practical shortlist, not a popularity ranking. Most entries are servers; the final entry, the Official MCP Registry, is a discovery service rather than a server to connect to an agent. The ecosystem changes quickly, so confirm a project’s current version, maintenance status, and client support before installing it.
| Pick | Best fit | First decision |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub MCP server | Repositories, issues, pull requests, and Copilot workflows | Scope credentials and decide which operations the agent may perform. |
| Playwright MCP | Browser navigation and UI interaction | Confirm your client supports it and review the browser access it receives. |
| Filesystem MCP server | Controlled access to project files | Set directory boundaries and review write access. |
| PostgreSQL MCP server | Relational data exploration and SQL workflows | Use read-only credentials for analysis unless writes are required. |
| SQLite MCP server | Local databases and prototyping | Choose the specific local database the agent should reach. |
| Context7 MCP | Current package and framework documentation | Check service terms and availability for your deployment. |
| HashiCorp Terraform MCP server | Infrastructure-as-code context and operations | Separate reading configuration from any ability to change infrastructure. |
| Figma Dev Mode MCP server | Design-system context for implementation | Check that your design-to-code workflow and client are supported. |
| Puppeteer MCP server | Browser automation for Puppeteer-oriented teams | Verify the exact repository is maintained and not archived. |
| Official MCP Registry | Discovering and checking public MCP server listings | Follow registry entries through to the provider’s current docs or repository. |
1. GitHub MCP server: repository and Copilot workflows
Choose GitHub’s server when the agent needs context from repositories, issues, or pull requests, or when you want to connect it to a Copilot workflow. GitHub operates a curated MCP Registry and documents MCP support in repository configuration. Treat access as a design choice, not a setup detail: use credentials limited to the repositories and actions the agent needs, and decide whether it should read, write, or both.
2. Playwright MCP: browser navigation and interaction
Playwright MCP is the browser-automation pick for navigating pages and interacting with user interfaces. Microsoft’s documentation describes structured accessibility snapshots and support for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Desktop, and other clients. A documented installation command is npx @playwright/mcp@latest. The @latest tag is convenient, but for repeatable team setups consider pinning a version after checking the current package and client instructions. Browser access may expose authenticated pages or sensitive content, so use an appropriate browser context and avoid giving an agent access to profiles it does not need.

3. Filesystem MCP server: bounded project-file access
Use a filesystem server when an agent needs to inspect or modify local project files. Configure an explicit workspace or directory allowlist rather than granting broad access to a home directory or machine. Then decide whether the use case needs read-only access or writes. Review the server’s tool descriptions so you know which operations it exposes before connecting it to an agent.
4. PostgreSQL MCP server: relational data and SQL
A PostgreSQL server can give an agent a way to explore relational data and support SQL workflows. For analysis, connect with a read-only database role; deploy a separate write-capable connection only when an operation genuinely requires it. Keep production data and credentials especially tightly controlled. The MCP connection is not a substitute for database permissions: the account’s privileges still determine what the server can do.
5. SQLite MCP server: local databases and prototypes
SQLite is a natural fit when the data is in a local, portable database or a prototype rather than a shared relational service. GitHub’s Copilot SDK documentation lists the official SQLite server among popular options. Before connecting it, identify which database file the agent should use and keep unrelated local data outside its permitted paths.

6. Context7 MCP: package and framework documentation
Context7 is intended to retrieve current package and framework documentation, which can help an agent answer implementation questions against library-specific material. GitHub’s MCP configuration documentation gives https://mcp.context7.com/mcp as an endpoint example. Check the service’s current terms, availability, and suitability for your deployment before relying on it, particularly if your workflow sends private project context to an external service.

7. HashiCorp Terraform MCP server: infrastructure-as-code
Terraform MCP is a candidate when the task needs infrastructure-as-code context or operations. The MCP Registry announcement names Terraform among listed official servers. Decide separately whether the agent only needs to understand configuration or should be able to initiate changes; infrastructure credentials and write paths warrant particularly careful review.
8. Figma Dev Mode MCP server: design context for implementation
Figma Dev Mode MCP targets design-to-code work by making design-system context available to implementation workflows. GitHub’s Registry announcement describes Figma Dev Mode as a design-to-code workflow. Verify that the server, your Figma setup, and your chosen client fit the specific project before connecting it; do not assume a listing alone guarantees compatibility with every client or account configuration.

9. Puppeteer MCP server: an alternative browser stack
Puppeteer MCP may suit a team already invested in Puppeteer. It is an alternative to consider for browser automation, not an automatic replacement for Playwright. The important qualification is maintenance: older reference entries may be archived, so check the current repository, its release activity, and security posture before installing a package or giving it browser access.
10. Official MCP Registry: discover and verify servers
The Official MCP Registry is the discovery tool to consult when looking for current public MCP server listings. The MCP project describes it as an open catalog and API and a primary source of truth for publicly available servers. Use an entry to check package identifiers, versions, descriptions, and dates, then follow through to the provider’s own documentation or repository for installation and permissions. Registry status is useful evidence, but it does not replace checking whether a server fits your client and security requirements.
Which MCP server should you install first?
Start with the narrowest task you want an agent to complete, then connect only the relevant server. A developer asking an agent to summarize a pull request needs a different integration from one asking it to inspect a local database or test a web interface.

- Write down the task. Specify whether the agent should read, create, edit, navigate, or execute anything.
- Choose the closest-fit server. Prefer the provider’s own server or documentation when one exists for the service you use.
- Check the client. Confirm the server supports the MCP client you actually run; do not infer compatibility from support in another client.
- Start with limited access. Set file boundaries, read-only database credentials, repository scope, and network reach before enabling broader operations.
- Test on a low-risk task. Confirm the agent sees the intended data and that exposed tools behave as expected before using sensitive projects or production credentials.
How to assess reliability and maintenance
MCP servers are not interchangeable packages with a universal quality score. Before installation, check the current registry listing where applicable, the provider’s documentation, and the repository’s recent activity. Look at the last release, listed version, open issues, and whether the repository is archived. Pin a version where practical so a package update does not silently change a team’s setup, and make upgrades deliberate.
Also inspect deployment shape. A local stdio package runs in your environment and may inherit local filesystem or process access; a hosted remote endpoint introduces a network service and potentially different credential and tenancy considerations. Neither model is automatically safer. Check where secrets are stored, what network destinations are reachable, and whether data leaves your environment.
Security checks before connecting an MCP server
- Read the tool descriptions: understand each exposed operation and whether it can change data or trigger actions.
- Limit credentials: use least-privilege tokens and separate read-only access from write-capable deployments.
- Constrain scope: allow only required repositories, directories, databases, browser contexts, or network destinations.
- Protect sensitive contexts: treat production databases, private repositories, authenticated browser profiles, and infrastructure as high-risk integrations.
- Recheck over time: server versions, registry entries, and maintenance status can change; review them before updates or expanded access.
Common setup problems and fixes
The server does not appear in the client
Check that the server configuration is in the location and format expected by that client, then restart or reload the client if its instructions require it. Confirm the executable or endpoint is reachable from the environment where the client runs, and verify that the selected server supports that client.

A local package fails to start
For a command such as npx @playwright/mcp@latest, check that Node.js and the package runner are installed and available in the client’s environment. If the client cannot resolve the command, use the package’s current installation instructions and check whether its working directory or environment differs from your terminal.
The agent cannot access a file, repository, or database
Check both layers: the MCP server’s configured scope and the underlying account’s permissions. A directory outside an allowlist, a repository excluded from a token, or a database role lacking privileges can all prevent access. Expand only the permission needed for the task rather than switching immediately to unrestricted credentials.
A browser task sees the wrong page or cannot interact
Confirm the browser context is the one the server is using, the page has finished loading, and the agent has a current view of the page’s accessible structure. For authenticated sites, avoid exposing a personal profile unnecessarily; use a task-appropriate session and verify what data the browser can reach.
A previously working server changes or disappears
Check the current version and maintenance status in the registry or provider repository, and inspect release notes or issue activity. If the repository is archived or the package no longer matches the documented setup, do not assume the old installation remains safe or supported; select a maintained option for the same task.
