The simplest free method is OBS Studio. Install OBS on Windows, macOS, or Linux, capture the browser window or display, configure desktop audio, test a short clip, then start recording. Chromebook users can use the built-in Screencast app. If you are building a website or browser extension, the getDisplayMedia() API can request a tab, window, or screen, but the user must approve the source in the browser dialog.
Capture only videos you are allowed to record. A site’s terms, applicable law, account permissions, enterprise policy, and technical protections can affect whether recording is permitted or works. DRM behavior varies by service; no recorder can guarantee that every protected stream will be captured.

A USB capture card is unnecessary when the webpage plays on the same computer. It is relevant when you need to record output from a separate phone, tablet, game console, or other device.
Record a webpage video with OBS Studio
OBS describes itself as free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. It supports browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. The steps below use the current desktop workflow; labels can vary slightly by operating system.

1. Prepare the page
- Open the webpage and sign in if the site requires it.
- Resize the browser and position the video at the size and location you want in the recording.
- Close notifications, unrelated tabs, and private information. Put the video in full-screen mode only if you want the browser’s full-screen presentation recorded.
- Check the site’s rules and your permission to record. Do not treat the ability to capture as permission to redistribute the video.
2. Create a scene and select the browser source
- Open OBS and create a new scene in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, select Window Capture and choose the browser window. On Windows or Linux, use Display Capture instead when Window Capture cannot show the video or when you need the entire monitor.
- On macOS, select macOS Screen Capture. Approve macOS screen-recording permission if requested, then choose the display or application window.
- Check the preview. Crop or resize the source in the preview only after confirming that the video is visible and not covered by another window.
Window capture keeps unrelated desktop activity out of the recording. Display capture is a fallback when a browser window is black, when the site uses an unusual rendering path, or when you need multiple windows visible.
3. Configure sound before recording
- Play the webpage video and watch the Audio Mixer meters in OBS.
- If the desktop-audio meter moves, OBS is receiving the browser sound. If it does not, open Settings and choose the correct desktop-audio device for your system, or add an Audio Output Capture source.
- Add Audio Input Capture only when you also need a microphone. Mute unused microphones to avoid room noise or feedback.
- Use headphones for the test if microphone monitoring creates an echo.
Browser-tab sound can depend on the operating system’s mixer, selected output device, and privacy permissions. A moving meter is more reliable than assuming audio will be present.

4. Test, record, and verify
- Click Start Recording, play 10–20 seconds of the webpage video, and click Stop Recording.
- Open the resulting file in a media player. Confirm that the picture is sharp enough, the beginning and end are included, and speech is synchronized with the video.
- For the final take, return to the start position, click Start Recording, play the video without covering the capture source, and stop when playback ends.
- Keep the test file until you have checked the final recording. OBS’s output folder and format are shown in Settings → Output → Recording.
Useful OBS choices
- Window versus display: choose Window Capture for a clean browser-only result; choose Display Capture when the window capture is blank or you need the full monitor.
- Scene layout: keep only the browser and required audio sources in the scene so accidental notifications and other windows are less likely to appear.
- File safety: select a recording format and destination with enough free disk space. Long, high-resolution recordings create large files.
- Performance: close demanding applications, avoid changing the browser window’s size during capture, and use a short test at the intended resolution and frame rate.
Use the browser’s capture API
For a site, internal tool, or extension, call getDisplayMedia(). Chrome Developers documents this as the screen-recording API that triggers a source-selection dialog. The user chooses a tab, window, or screen; a page or extension cannot silently select one.

Extensions can use Chrome’s tabCapture API for tab-specific workflows, also subject to permission and policy rules.
Record on a Chromebook with Screencast
- Open the ChromeOS Screencast app from the launcher.
- Start a new recording and select the screen or region containing the webpage video.
- Grant the requested permissions, play the video, and stop the recording when it finishes.
- Review the saved screencast before sharing it.
Screencast is the built-in route for Chromebook users who do not want to install a desktop recorder. Available controls can depend on the ChromeOS version and administrator settings.

Troubleshooting: picture, sound, and permissions
The recording is black
- Switch from Window Capture to Display Capture in OBS, or select the correct application in macOS Screen Capture.
- Make sure the browser window is not minimized or hidden behind another protected surface.
- Update OBS and the browser, then repeat the short test.
There is video but no sound
- Confirm the Audio Mixer meter moves while the video plays.
- Select the actual output device in OBS settings; changing headphones or speakers after setup can leave OBS listening to the old device.
- On macOS, review screen-recording and audio permissions. In browser APIs, ask the user to select a source that offers audio and test the resulting file.
The browser asks for permission every time
This is expected for getDisplayMedia(). The API is designed around an explicit user choice and cannot silently reuse a tab or screen. Enterprise policy can also disable or limit capture.
The video stops or the page changes
- Keep the selected window open and avoid navigating it during capture.
- Disable sleep or screen-lock behavior for the duration of a permitted recording.
- Use a test recording to identify buffering, login expiry, or network interruptions before the final take.
The file is too large or playback is jerky
- Lower the capture resolution or frame rate to match the source instead of recording an unnecessarily large display.
- Close GPU- and CPU-intensive applications and keep adequate disk space available.
- Record in shorter segments when the source is long, then edit the permitted sections together.

Questions that often come up
Can I record only the webpage tab?
Yes, when the browser’s sharing dialog offers a tab and you select it. OBS can instead capture the browser window; the browser API and OBS therefore provide different source-selection controls.
Do I need a capture card for an online video?
No. A capture card is for a separate device’s output. Same-computer browser playback can be recorded with OBS, a browser capture API, or ChromeOS Screencast.
Why did the site block my recording?
Site controls, DRM, browser security, account restrictions, or enterprise policy may prevent capture. The available sources document capture mechanics, not a universal way around protected playback; follow the service’s terms instead.
