Open the PDF, move to the page or area you want, then use your device’s screenshot control: Windows: Windows logo key + Shift + S; Mac: Shift-Command-4; iPhone: Side + Volume Up (or the model’s Home-button combination); Android: Power + Volume Down. For a clean, precise image of PDF content on a computer, select a rectangle around the page—or use Acrobat’s Take a snapshot command to copy a selected area to the clipboard.
The right method depends on what you need: a picture of the whole screen, a crop of the PDF page, or a selected area ready to paste into another app. These steps capture what is displayed; they do not convert the entire PDF into a set of image files.
Choose what you need to capture
- Visible PDF area without app controls: choose a rectangular or region capture and drag around the page content.
- A whole app window or screen: use the window or full-screen capture option. This may include browser tabs, toolbars, or other items around the PDF.
- A selected area copied for pasting: use Acrobat or Reader’s Snapshot tool, if available. It puts the selected content on the clipboard rather than requiring you to find a saved screenshot file.
- A tall section extending beyond the visible page: use a scrolling capture only if your device and PDF viewer support it. No single full-page method works in every PDF app.
For a crisp result, zoom the PDF until the text and details are legible, then capture only the relevant area. A screenshot records the PDF as it appears on screen, so the viewer’s zoom level and the size of the selected region affect how much detail the resulting image contains.
Take a PDF screenshot on Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open the PDF and navigate to the page or section you want.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Choose a capture mode and select the PDF area. A rectangular selection is usually the easiest way to leave out tabs, toolbars, and other screen content. Snipping Tool also supports freeform, window, and full-screen capture.
- Open the capture in Snipping Tool to edit, save, or share it. If you want to paste the capture into another app, use the clipboard option where available.
If you press Print Screen (PrtSc), Windows can copy the whole screen to the clipboard. That is useful when you need everything visible, but a region capture gives you more control over what appears in the image. The exact save and sharing options can vary by Windows version.

Take a PDF screenshot on a Mac
Capture a selected area
- Open the PDF and position the page.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then drag across the area you want to capture.
- Release to take the screenshot. By default, macOS saves it to the desktop. Click the floating thumbnail to edit it, or drag the thumbnail elsewhere.
Capture a window or the full screen
For a window, press Shift-Command-4, press Space, then click the window. For the full screen, press Shift-Command-3. Window and full-screen captures may include material beyond the PDF page itself.
On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, Shift-Command-5 opens the Screenshot utility. Use its controls to choose a capture type, set a timer, or change the save location. If the screenshot is not on the desktop, check the save location selected in Screenshot options. Some apps may not allow their windows to be captured.
Take a PDF screenshot on iPhone
- Open the PDF in its viewer and display the page you need.
- On an iPhone with Face ID, press and quickly release Side + Volume Up together.
- On Touch ID models, use the button combination for your model: Apple documents Side + Home or Top + Home.
- Use the screenshot preview to crop, mark up, share, or save the image. Find saved screenshots in Photos.
The screenshot interface varies by iOS version: iOS 26 provides quick tools for actions such as markup, cropping, sharing, and saving, while iOS 18 and earlier look different. A full-page capture option is available for supported content such as a webpage in Safari; do not assume your PDF app can capture every page of a document in one image. For a particular page, take a regular screenshot and crop it.

Take a PDF screenshot on Android
- Open the PDF and move to the content you want.
- Press Power + Volume Down at the same time.
- If that does not work, press and hold Power, then tap Screenshot if the option appears. If neither method works, check the device manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
- Open the capture in Photos or your Gallery app to view, edit, or share it.
On Android 12 and later, many scrollable screens offer Capture more for a scrolling screenshot. Availability depends on the device and the screen or app; it is not a guaranteed way to capture a whole PDF. If Capture more does not appear, take separate screenshots of the pages you need.

Acrobat desktop
In desktop Acrobat, choose Menu (Windows) or Edit (macOS) > Undo, Redo and More > Take a snapshot. Click to capture visible content or drag a rectangle around a specific area. Acrobat copies that selection as an image to the clipboard. Paste it into another app with Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on Mac.
The menu can differ with Acrobat’s experience or version. If you cannot find the command, use your operating system’s screenshot tool instead.

Adobe Reader
Adobe’s documented Reader path is Edit > More > Take A Snapshot. Drag a rectangle around the area, release, then paste it into another app. If the command is unavailable or copying does not work, document security settings may restrict copying. Do not try to bypass a restriction; use an authorized copy or ask the document owner for an accessible version.

The capture includes browser tabs or toolbars
Use a rectangular or region selection instead of a full-screen or window capture. On Mac, Shift-Command-4 gives you a drag-to-select area. On Windows, use the region option in the Snipping Tool overlay. In Acrobat Snapshot, drag around the PDF content you want.

The screenshot is not where you expected
On Mac, screenshots normally save to the desktop unless you changed the location in Screenshot options. On iPhone, look in Photos; on Android, check Photos or Gallery. A Snapshot capture is copied to the clipboard, so paste it into another app rather than searching for a screenshot file.
Snapshot or copy is unavailable
Acrobat and Reader menus can vary by version, and PDF security settings may disallow copying. Try the operating system’s screenshot method for content you are authorized to capture. If the window is protected, macOS may not permit capturing it.
A scrolling or full-page capture is missing
Android’s Capture more works only on supported devices and scrollable screens. iPhone full-page capture is available for supported content such as webpages in Safari, not necessarily in every PDF viewer. If your app does not offer the option, capture the needed pages separately.
The text looks too small or blurry
Zoom in before taking the screenshot, then select a smaller area around the text. A screenshot captures screen output rather than preserving the PDF’s selectable text. If someone needs to search or copy the wording, share the PDF or an authorized text extract instead of relying on an image.

A screenshot is the practical choice for sharing exactly what is visible, including annotations or the viewer’s current display. It is also quick when you need only one region. Its trade-off is that the result is a screen image: it may include unwanted interface elements, and small text can be difficult to read.
If the goal is a clean image of a page rather than a record of what is on screen, check whether your PDF app offers an export or conversion function. That is a different workflow from taking a screenshot and may preserve page dimensions more directly. The methods here are intended for capturing visible content; they do not promise batch export or a full-document image conversion.
