Chrome saves an image of the page from top to bottom, including content outside the current viewport.
What Chrome’s full-page capture does
A full-page screenshot is different from a normal screen capture. It records the document beyond the visible browser window, so the result can include sections a reader would see only by scrolling. Chrome DevTools also has a command named Capture screenshot; that command captures only the current viewport. Choose the full-size command when you need the entire page.
The built-in workflow is the best choice for a one-off capture because it requires no extension, account, or extra software. It produces an image rather than a manually stitched stack of viewport screenshots.
How to capture the entire page in Chrome
- Open the page. Launch Chrome on a desktop and load the URL you want to capture. Wait until the page has finished its initial load.
- Open DevTools. Use Chrome’s normal developer-tools command for your operating system, or open DevTools from Chrome’s menu. If DevTools is already open, leave it open.
- Open More options. In the DevTools toolbar, select More options to display the additional commands.
- Choose the full-size command. Select Capture a full size screenshot. Do not choose Capture screenshot unless you want only what is currently visible.
- Check the downloaded image. Chrome sends the result through its normal download behavior. Open the download notification or your configured download folder, then rename or move the file as needed.
The resulting image represents the page as Chrome rendered it at capture time. It is not a guarantee that every animated, personalized, or continuously changing element will appear in exactly the same state on every capture.

Prepare the page before capturing
Let important content render
Some sites add content after the initial response, such as comments, product recommendations, or images that load as you scroll. Give the page time to finish its normal loading cycle before invoking the command. If the site requires an interaction to reveal content, perform that interaction first.
Decide whether your session should be visible
Chrome captures what the browser can access, including content shown to your signed-in session. Review the page for private names, account details, order numbers, or other information before sharing the image.
Expect page-specific behavior
Sticky headers, fixed chat buttons, animations, and scripts that change the document while it is being captured can affect the output. Chrome documents the command as a full-page capture, but does not promise identical handling for every page implementation.
Choose the right DevTools capture mode
Full page is only one of DevTools’ screenshot tools. Select the target that matches what you intend to deliver.
| DevTools choice | What it captures | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Capture screenshot | The current visible viewport | You need a quick image of what is on screen now. |
| Capture a full size screenshot | The page from top to bottom, including below-the-fold content | You need a single scrolling-page image. |
| Capture node screenshot | A selected element from the Elements panel | You need one component, such as a card, chart, or article. |
| Capture node screenshot for an oversized node | A selected element larger than the visible screen | The element itself is the deliverable and extends beyond the viewport. |
| Capture area screenshot | A region you select | You need a specific rectangle rather than the whole document. |
| Capture a mobile screenshot | A page rendered with device emulation, optionally with a device frame | You are documenting a mobile layout rather than the desktop page. |
These choices solve different problems. Do not use a viewport capture and then assume it represents the rest of the page; use the full-size command when below-the-fold content matters.
When an extension is useful
You do not need an extension for a normal full-page capture. An extension can make sense if you perform captures frequently or need an additional export or editing workflow.

GoFullPage – Full Page Screen Capture is one currently listed Chrome Web Store example. Its listing says it can capture a whole page and download the result as an image or PDF, and advertises support for complex pages, inner scrollable elements, and embedded iframes. Those are the publisher’s claims, not independent test results. The listing showed version 8.9 dated September 24, 2026, and version 8.8 dated September 10, 2026, when checked on September 29, 2026; extension capabilities and listing status can change.
Before installing any extension, review its requested permissions and decide whether sending page content through an additional component is acceptable for your work. For a confidential page, the built-in DevTools route avoids adding another extension to the capture path.
Troubleshooting a full-page capture
The result contains only the visible screen
You probably selected Capture screenshot. Open DevTools’ More options menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot instead.
The page looks incomplete
Wait for delayed content to render and repeat the capture. If content appears only after scrolling, clicking, or accepting a site-specific prompt, perform that action first. A page can also intentionally withhold content from automated or unusual rendering paths; Chrome’s command does not guarantee that every script behaves identically during capture.
A fixed header or widget appears repeatedly
Fixed-position elements are part of the page’s layout. If the repeated element makes the image unusable, look for the site’s own display setting, dismiss the widget before capture, or capture the relevant content as a selected node or area instead.

The image is too large to work with
A long page can produce a very tall image. Keep the original for reference, then resize or crop a copy for documentation. If a single image is not practical, capture a meaningful element or region, or use a PDF-oriented workflow instead.

The capture includes private information
Stop before sharing it. Crop or redact the copy, sign out and capture a public version when appropriate, and check browser download folders and shared storage for the original file.
You need a PDF rather than an image
DevTools’ full-size screenshot command is intended for an image. Use Chrome’s print flow or another PDF workflow when pagination, paper size, margins, or selectable text are requirements.
Or skip the browser setup:
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so you can capture a URL from a script or let an AI agent call the service instead of opening Chrome DevTools.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the URL with the page you need and provide your API key. The same request in Python is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
In Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Why this differs from a raw browser capture
- Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. The response identifies the result with
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders. - An MCP server exposes
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdfto Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Options for production captures
For full-page work, you can load lazy images, capture one element by CSS selector, set dark mode, choose a device preset or custom viewport, apply retina scale, and request PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. Other controls include custom CSS and JavaScript, clicking an element before capture, hiding selectors, waiting for a selector, delay, or network idle, and blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types.
Authenticated or regional pages can use custom headers, cookies, a user agent, an Authorization value, timezone, or geolocation. You can request a transparent background, resize an image, cache responses with a TTL you choose, create signed links for public <img> tags, submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, query usage through the usage API, and use the OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration.

| Scale | 250,000 | $99 |
| Business | 1,000,000 | $249 |
Every feature is available on every plan. Yearly billing provides two months free. Because unsuccessful page loads and cache hits are not billed, inspect the verdict and billing headers when you monitor a capture pipeline rather than counting every HTTP response as a paid screenshot.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot include content below the fold?
Yes. Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot command is designed to include the document below the visible viewport; Capture screenshot is the viewport-only alternative.
Where does Chrome save the screenshot?
Chrome uses its normal download behavior. Check the download notification or the download folder configured in Chrome, then move or rename the image.
Can I capture only one element instead of the whole page?
Yes. DevTools includes node-capture commands from the Elements panel, including a mode for nodes larger than the screen.
Is an extension required for a scrolling screenshot?
No. DevTools provides the full-size capture command. Extensions are optional for workflows that need additional export or editing features.
Why might a lazy-loaded image be missing?
The page may not have loaded it yet, or the site may reveal it only after interaction. Wait for the content and trigger the required interaction before capturing; Chrome does not promise identical behavior for every dynamic implementation.
