Choose the capture you actually need
“Across multiple monitors” can mean several different things:
- All displays: one capture of the entire desktop workspace.
- One display or window: useful when another monitor contains private or irrelevant material.
- A cross-display region: a selected rectangle that starts on one monitor and ends on another. Support for this exact selection can depend on the operating system, display arrangement, scaling, and capture tool.
- Clipboard or file: a clipboard image is convenient for chat and documents; a saved PNG, JPEG, or other file is better for archiving and automation.
Before capturing, close sensitive windows, decide whether the pointer should appear, and verify which display is primary. A full-desktop image can be very wide (or tall), so check that the destination application can display its dimensions.
Windows 11 and Windows 10: capture multiple monitors
1. Verify the monitor layout
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select Identify to show the number on each physical monitor.
- Drag the display tiles until their on-screen positions match the real arrangement. Test pointer movement across the monitors; a pointer that catches on an edge usually indicates a layout mismatch.
- Check each monitor’s resolution, orientation, and scaling. Different scaling percentages can make a selected region appear to have unexpected dimensions.

2. Capture the entire desktop
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- In the Snipping Tool overlay, choose the Full-screen capture mode.
- Wait for the capture notification, then open Snipping Tool to review it.
- Edit or annotate if needed, select Save, and choose a location and file name.
Full-screen mode is the built-in choice when the goal is to include the connected displays. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions describe region, window, and full-screen modes and explain how to edit and save the result.
3. Capture a selected area
Press Windows + Shift + S and choose Rectangular snip or Freeform snip. Drag over the required desktop area, release, and then review the image in Snipping Tool before saving. If the selection will not cross a monitor boundary, use full-screen captures for each display and combine them in an image editor, or try a different capture utility. Microsoft’s shortcut reference also documents Print Screen (PrtSc), which places a static snapshot of the entire screen on the clipboard: Copy the window or screen contents.
Windows 10 support note
The same Snipping Tool instructions list Windows 10, but Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. For a supported operating system, prioritize Windows 11 and apply current security updates.
Mac: capture one or more displays
Full-screen capture
Press Shift + Command + 3 to capture the screen. macOS saves the screenshot according to your Screenshot settings, normally as a file on the desktop. With more than one connected display, inspect the output: Apple’s published instructions explain the shortcut but do not explicitly state whether a multi-display full-screen capture is always stored as one combined image or as separate captures.

Selected area
Press Shift + Command + 4, then drag the crosshair over the area you want. Release to capture. For a cross-display selection, begin on one monitor and drag toward the other; if the selection stops at the display edge or produces an unexpected image, capture each monitor separately and assemble the files.
Screenshot controls and options
Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot app (available in macOS Mojave 10.14 and later). The controls provide full-screen and selected-portion capture, a timer, and destination options. Use the options menu to choose where files go, then make a test capture and open it at 100% zoom.
Some apps—including Apple TV, according to Apple—may block screenshots of their windows. Apple’s complete shortcut guidance is at Take a screenshot on Mac.
How to get a clean cross-monitor result
- Match geometry: arrange display tiles in the same left-to-right and top-to-bottom order as the hardware.
- Account for scaling: mixed scaling or Retina/non-Retina displays can make pixel dimensions differ from the apparent desktop size.
- Hide distractions: close notifications, menus, chat windows, and private documents before selecting the capture.
- Review seams: open the image and check monitor boundaries, rotated screens, and clipped taskbars or menu bars.
- Use separate files when necessary: if a tool cannot select across monitors reliably, capture each display and combine them on a canvas with the correct relative positions.
Common problems and fixes
The second monitor is missing
Return to Settings > System > Display on Windows and use Identify. Reseat the cable or dock, select Detect if available, and confirm the monitor is set to Extend rather than Duplicate. On Mac, open the Displays settings and verify that macOS sees the external panel.

The image is split, blank, or the wrong size
Check the capture mode: a window snip cannot include another display. Use full-screen mode for all displays. Then inspect display scaling, orientation, and resolution. A blank area can indicate a display that was arranged in software but is asleep or disconnected at capture time.
A cross-display drag stops at the edge
Do not assume every built-in selector supports one rectangle across every layout. Capture full-screen, capture each display separately, or use a tool that explicitly supports virtual-desktop coordinates. Test with a harmless desktop view before relying on the result.
An app refuses to capture
Protected-content apps can block screenshots. Apple specifically notes that some apps, such as Apple TV, may not allow window screenshots. Capture non-protected content, use the app’s export function, or follow the content owner’s permitted workflow.
The file is too large to share
Save a lossless PNG for text and diagrams, then resize or convert a copy to JPEG or WebP for messaging. Keep the original so resizing does not permanently remove detail.
