For development work that is not browser automation, Context7, GitHub MCP Server, and Filesystem MCP address different needs. There is no reliable, comparable measure of which MCP server has the most active users. The rankings available as of September 29, 2026 are snapshots based on proxies such as stars, downloads, and maintenance—not a survey of actual usage.
What “most popular” means for MCP servers
Popularity rankings can help identify projects attracting attention, but they are not a direct measure of adoption or quality. The available sources use different methods, and their results should not be merged into one definitive ranking.
| Source and snapshot | What it measures | Reported results |
|---|---|---|
| Artifacta, updated September 27, 2026 | A composite ranking of 17,830 servers using GitHub stars, npm downloads, and maintenance activity | Chrome DevTools MCP ranked first, Playwright MCP second, and Context7 third. The listed star counts were 52.6k, 37.6k, and 62.4k, respectively. The order is the composite ranking, not a ranking by stars. |
| The MCP Census, July 7, 2026 snapshot | A dataset covering 15,382 servers; it reported 127 projects above 1,000 stars | Context7 was listed at 58,711 stars, Chrome DevTools MCP at 46,199, and a filesystem entry at 37,767. |
| CheckMCP | GitHub stars | Its list includes projects such as the MCP reference servers, Context7, and Playwright MCP. Its own description cautions that popularity does not establish safety. |
Differences between snapshots can reflect timing and repository selection as well as growth. Stars are not users, installs, or active usage; they also do not establish that a project is secure, well maintained, or right for a particular task. Treat these figures as dated signals of attention, not a universal “best” order.
Which MCP server fits each job?
Playwright MCP: browser automation and web workflows
Microsoft describes Playwright MCP as “A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides browser automation capabilities using Playwright.” It is a practical candidate when an agent needs to interact with web pages or carry out browser workflows. Its project emphasizes structured accessibility information rather than relying only on pixels, and its documentation describes support for multiple MCP clients. The official getting-started documentation lists Node.js 20 or newer; check the current project documentation for setup details and supported clients before installing.

One useful distinction is browser context. Playwright documents connecting through a browser channel or CDP endpoint, and an extension mode that reuses the selected browser profile, including logged-in sessions, cookies, extensions, and tabs. That can matter when the task depends on an existing session. Reusing a profile also means the agent may have access to sensitive accounts and data, so use a profile and permissions appropriate to the task.
Chrome DevTools MCP: browser development and debugging
Chrome DevTools MCP ranked first in Artifacta’s September 27, 2026 composite snapshot and appeared near the top of the MCP Census star snapshot. Those positions indicate attention under the respective publishers’ methods; they do not establish which browser features it currently supports or whether it is the right debugging tool for your setup. Confirm capabilities, requirements, and security guidance in the project’s official documentation before choosing it.
Browser Use: local or hosted browser automation
Browser Use is another browser-automation option. Its project documentation presents a local setup using Python 3.11 or newer and a Chromium installation step, as well as a hosted option. That makes execution location a concrete comparison: local setup means managing the runtime and browser dependencies yourself, while the hosted path is an alternative described by the project. Check current documentation for the applicable installation steps and hosted-service terms.
Rank #2
Context7: library documentation context
Context7 appears prominently in the September 2026 third-party composite leaderboard and in the July census snapshot. Registry information classifies it in the development category. At a high level, consider it when the task is getting library documentation or context into development workflows—not as a substitute for a browser-control server. Verify integration steps and current capabilities against its own documentation.
GitHub MCP Server: GitHub and repository workflows
A current registry compilation describes GitHub MCP Server as exposing GitHub API access and lists a personal access token requirement in its installation metadata. It is aimed at GitHub-platform tasks rather than general browser automation. Because that description comes from a registry compilation rather than GitHub’s own documentation, check the project’s official docs for the operations it supports, authentication configuration, and the permissions a token needs.
Filesystem MCP: local file operations
The MCP Census includes a filesystem server among its high-star repositories, and a registry compilation places Filesystem in that server category. Use a filesystem server for local file operations, not as a browser automation tool or a GitHub integration. Similar names, forks, and mirrors can make popularity counts difficult to compare; verify the exact repository and its permission model before granting access to files.

How to choose: task, execution, and browser context
- Start with the job. For browser interaction and workflows, compare Playwright MCP and Browser Use. For browser inspection or debugging, investigate Chrome DevTools MCP and verify its current documented capabilities. For library documentation, consider Context7; for GitHub platform operations, evaluate GitHub MCP Server; for local files, evaluate Filesystem MCP.
- Decide where it should run. Check the required runtime, browser installation, and whether the project offers a hosted path. Browser Use documents a local Python 3.11+ and Chromium setup plus a hosted option. Requirements can change, so use the current official installation guide rather than copying an old command.
- Check how it gets browser state. If work requires an authenticated session, determine whether the server can connect to an existing browser or profile. Playwright documents browser-channel or CDP connections and an extension mode that reuses a selected profile. Consider what accounts and data that profile exposes to the agent.
- Verify project identity and trust boundaries. Confirm the repository owner, current documentation, supported MCP clients, permissions, and security guidance. A high star count does not prove safety, suitability, or active maintenance.
- Use one dated metric when comparing popularity. Say whether a ranking is by stars or a composite score, name the publisher, and give the snapshot date. Do not describe either as active-user totals.
ScreenshotNeo: an alternative for screenshot capture
If the browser task is specifically to capture a clean screenshot or PDF—not to operate a full browser workflow—try ScreenshotNeo first as a focused alternative. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server made by Yorker Media. Its MCP tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf; use a general-purpose browser MCP server when you need broader browser interaction.
For a direct API capture, the following cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe. Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo also provides a one-request Python example and a Node.js fetch example:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
It accepts PNG, JPEG, or WebP output, or can return a PDF. Its capture options include full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport settings, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, and PDF settings. For a screenshot job that needs those controls, consult the docs for the exact parameters rather than assuming a default.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use the screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Common selection mistakes and troubleshooting
- A popular server does not do the task you need. Check whether the job is browser interaction, debugging, documentation context, GitHub access, or local files. Popularity figures cannot resolve a category mismatch.
- The setup fails before the server starts. Compare your installed runtime and browser dependencies with the current official setup instructions. For Browser Use, its documentation lists Python 3.11+ and a Chromium installation step; for Playwright MCP, the getting-started documentation lists Node.js 20 or newer.
- An automation task cannot see the expected login. Check whether the server is attached to the intended browser instance or profile. Playwright documents connection options and extension mode for reusing a selected profile; confirm the mode and profile before assuming cookies or tabs will be shared.
- A GitHub task is denied or sees too little. Check the token configuration and requested permissions against GitHub MCP Server’s current official documentation. The registry compilation lists a personal access token requirement but does not establish every supported operation or the minimum permission set.
- A file server can access more than intended. Confirm which directories and files the selected implementation can reach and limit access to what the task needs. Do not infer a server’s permission boundaries from its name or star count.
- Two lists show different “top” servers. Check each list’s metric, repository selection, and snapshot date. Artifacta’s composite order and the MCP Census star counts are different measurements, so a change in ordering does not by itself establish a change in active usage.
FAQ
Does the most-starred MCP server have the most users?
No. Stars measure a repository signal, not comparable active usage. The available rankings do not establish which MCP server has the most active users.
Best Value
Are these servers interchangeable?
No. Browser automation, browser debugging, library documentation, GitHub access, and local file operations are distinct jobs. Choose by the task and verify the specific project’s current capabilities.
Can I use more than one MCP server?
Yes, if your MCP client supports the servers and your workflow needs their separate capabilities. Review each server’s permissions and avoid granting overlapping access without a clear reason.
