Use two MCP pieces for this workflow: Storybook’s @storybook/addon-mcp exposes a running Storybook to an AI assistant at /mcp by default, while storybook-addon-playwright-mcp teaches the assistant how to author visual-test actions. The Playwright addon and browser, not the helper server, perform the actual capture.
This distinction prevents the most common setup mistake. Connect the assistant to Storybook for component context, add the screenshot-focused helper for test authoring, then let the Playwright addon execute the story actions and save baselines.
What “Storybook MCP” means
There is no single universal Storybook screenshot MCP. The name usually refers to two related integrations with different responsibilities.
Storybook’s @storybook/addon-mcp
This addon runs inside your Storybook and exposes an MCP endpoint. An assistant can inspect components and documentation, generate stories and help run tests through that connection. The default endpoint is /mcp; projects can configure a different pathname.

Documentation lookup depends on a components manifest. Not every framework generates that manifest, so check your framework’s Storybook setup before expecting component-documentation tools to work.
storybook-addon-playwright-mcp
This is a separate, local MCP server focused on authoring screenshot and visual-regression tests for storybook-addon-playwright. It supplies instructions and reference tools for actions, selectors and screenshot options. It does not open a browser or take an image itself.
Prerequisites and compatibility
- A Storybook project with a running development server.
- An MCP-capable coding assistant (the exact configuration format varies by assistant).
- The Storybook Playwright addon for executing browser actions and writing screenshots.
- The local screenshot MCP helper, added through the package’s documented
npxcommand or equivalent assistant configuration. - For the package’s declared compatibility matrix: Storybook
^10, Playwright~1.59and Node.js>=24.15.0. These are the package page’s stated requirements and may change; verify the versions installed in your project.
The package documentation says it has been tested with React, may not work with other frameworks, and supports CSF only. It cannot run as an addon in a static Storybook build, although screenshots can be tested against static-build files. Treat these as compatibility warnings, not guarantees for every future release.
Connect an AI assistant to Storybook
- Install and register
@storybook/addon-mcpusing Storybook’s official addon setup path for your project. - Start the Storybook development server.
- In your assistant’s MCP settings, add the server URL using the running Storybook origin and
/mcp(or your configured pathname). Each assistant uses different JSON keys and restart behavior, so follow that client’s MCP configuration syntax rather than copying a vendor-specific file blindly. - Ask the assistant to list a component or story. If it cannot retrieve documentation, confirm that your framework generated a components manifest and that the manifest option is enabled as documented by Storybook.
A typical endpoint value is conceptually:
http://localhost:6006/mcp
The port is an example only; use the port printed by your Storybook command.
Have the assistant author a screenshot test
- Add the local
storybook-addon-playwright-mcpserver to the assistant using the package’s documentednpxconfiguration. - Tell the assistant which CSF story should receive a visual test, the viewport or device context, and whether the assertion should cover the full page or one element.
- Ask it to create the story-adjacent
*.stories.playwright.jsonfile. Keep action data next to the story so it is versioned with the component. - Review selectors and waits before running a baseline. Prefer stable hooks such as
data-slot,data-testidor anid. If no stable hook exists, add a test ID to the story component or a tight wrapper.
A minimal action file is shaped like this; use the action names and options supported by your installed package:

The helper’s guide documents the complete action catalog, focused-element screenshots, browser settings and screenshot options. Treat the example as a pattern, not a replacement for that catalog.
Generate and save Storybook screenshots
Preview in the addon panel
With Storybook running, open the Playwright addon panel, select the story and preview its action sequence. Save a screenshot after confirming that fonts, data and animations have settled.
Generate baselines from the CLI
Use the addon’s documented generate command. The command expects a running Storybook server, resolves the *.stories.playwright.json path relative to the project root, and can target one story or a different Storybook URL. Run it from the project root so path matching is predictable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Cross-browser runs can take tens of seconds. The addon normally waits for the Storybook root to settle; stories that load data or render late should add an explicit selector wait before the screenshot action.
Choose page or element capture
- Full page: useful for a composed screen or layout regression.
- Focused element: preferred when the test concerns one component. Tune offsets so the image does not include excessive surrounding space.
Make captures deterministic
Use stable selectors
Text selectors and generated CSS classes change easily. Add a semantic data-testid, data-slot or stable id to the component or a narrow wrapper. A focused selector also produces smaller, easier-to-review baselines.

- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Wait for the real readiness signal
A fixed delay can hide race conditions. Prefer a selector that appears only after the story is ready. If the story depends on a network response or asynchronous fixture, expose a visible ready state and wait for it before capture.
Control visual noise
Disable animations where your test setup permits, use fixed test data, and keep viewport and browser settings in the action configuration. Otherwise, differences in timing or content can look like component changes.
Troubleshooting
The assistant cannot connect
- Confirm Storybook is running and the endpoint includes the correct origin and
/mcppathname. - Check whether you changed the pathname in Storybook configuration.
- Restart the assistant after editing its MCP settings if that client requires a restart.
Documentation tools return no components
Check whether your framework generates a components manifest and whether that feature is enabled. The MCP endpoint can be healthy while documentation tools remain unavailable.
No screenshot is produced
Remember that storybook-addon-playwright-mcp is an authoring helper. Install and configure the Playwright addon, keep Storybook running, and execute the action file through the panel or the addon’s generate command.
The capture is blank or clipped
Use a readiness selector, verify that the selector exists in the selected story, and try a full-page capture to distinguish a selector problem from a rendering problem. For focused captures, reduce offsets and target a stable wrapper.

The package fails to install or run
Compare your Node.js, Storybook and Playwright versions with the package’s declared matrix. Also check the framework and CSF limitations; a static Storybook build cannot host the addon as a running addon.
Local Playwright versus hosted visual testing
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright addon with Storybook MCP | Developers who want local, versioned action files and direct control of browsers | You maintain browsers, CI execution and baseline storage/review. |
| Storycapture | A CLI-style crawl of stories using Puppeteer with viewport, wait and output controls | It is a separate crawler, not either MCP integration. |
| Chromatic | Teams that want Storybook’s hosted visual-testing workflow and official addon option | Hosted setup and review flow replace much of the local infrastructure; current pricing is not established here. |
Choose local Playwright when reproducible files and on-premise control matter. Consider hosted testing when browser coverage, centralized review and CI management are more valuable than keeping every baseline local.

Can I use this with a static Storybook deployment?
The screenshot helper cannot run as an addon in a static build. You can still test screenshots against static-build files, but use a running Storybook server for the addon workflow.
Where should visual baselines live?
Keep the action JSON beside its story and store generated baselines in the directory convention used by your Playwright addon and CI process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the MCP endpoint require a public Storybook URL?
No. An assistant can connect to a locally running endpoint such as your Storybook host and configured MCP pathname; remote exposure is only needed when the assistant cannot reach your development machine.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I do when a story is intentionally dynamic?
Replace changing data with a deterministic fixture or assert a stable focused region. If the changing region is irrelevant, hide it or capture a narrower selector rather than weakening the entire visual test.
