To take a browser screenshot with MCP, connect an MCP browser server such as Playwright MCP to your client, navigate to the page, then ask the assistant to use browser_take_screenshot. Leave options unset for the visible viewport, set fullPage: true for the entire scrollable document, or set target for one element. Add filename to save an image; without it, the image is returned inline for visual inspection.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) supplies the connection between your AI client and tools. It does not define one universal screenshot command: names, parameters and setup vary by server. The examples below use the currently documented Playwright MCP behavior.
What you need before taking a screenshot
- An MCP-capable client, such as an MCP-compatible coding or chat application.
- A configured Playwright MCP server. Configuration location and syntax depend on the client; follow that client’s MCP instructions and Playwright’s getting-started guide.
- A URL that the browser session can reach. Pages requiring authentication, a private network or special headers may need additional browser configuration.
Playwright also documents an HTTP deployment started with npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931. When you use that mode, configure your client with the server URL. The guide states that HTTP sessions have a five-second heartbeat timeout by default; this is an HTTP-session setting, not a requirement for screenshots.
Configure Playwright MCP in your client
Open your client’s MCP settings, choose the option to add a server, and enter the Playwright MCP command or server URL required by that client. The exact file path, JSON shape and restart step are client-specific, so do not copy a configuration schema from one client into another without checking its documentation. After saving, restart or reload the client if it does not discover the tools immediately.

Confirm that the tool list includes browser_take_screenshot. You should also see navigation and page-inspection tools. If the server is not listed, check that the command is installed, the executable is on the client’s PATH, and the client can start the process without an interactive shell prompt.
Take a viewport screenshot
- Ask the assistant to open the page, for example:
Go to https://example.com. - Wait for navigation and any required page interaction to finish.
- Ask:
Take a screenshot of the current page.
Playwright MCP invokes browser_take_screenshot. With no target or fullPage, it captures the current viewport. With no filename, the image is returned inline, which is useful when the model needs to inspect layout, charts or canvas output.
A screenshot is a visual artifact, not a reliable source of interaction references. For text, structure and controls, ask for an accessibility snapshot (Playwright’s browser_snapshot) and use the returned element references for actions. Playwright explicitly describes screenshots as being for looking at, not acting on; use the snapshot to interact.
Capture the whole page
Request: Take a full-page screenshot and save it as homepage.png. The corresponding tool call sets fullPage: true and filename: "homepage.png". Full-page mode captures the scrollable document rather than only what is visible in the viewport.

fullPage and target are mutually exclusive. If you need the entire page, remove target; if you need one component, use an element capture instead. Long pages can include content that appears only after scrolling or lazy loading, so allow the browser time to finish rendering before capture.
Capture one element
- Ask for an accessibility snapshot and identify the element reference for the component you need, such as a form, card or chart.
- Request:
Take a screenshot of just that element. - Alternatively, provide a unique CSS selector as the
targetvalue when your server/client accepts selectors.
Element capture is useful for a login form, a pricing card or a chart without surrounding page content. Do not combine target with fullPage: true.
Control file format, resolution and output
| Option | Values and behavior | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
type |
png, jpeg, or webp. If omitted, Playwright can infer it from the filename extension; otherwise PNG is the default. |
Use PNG for lossless UI detail, JPEG for smaller photographic files, or WebP for a modern compact image. |
filename |
Saves to a named file. Relative paths resolve against the workspace root. Omit it to return the image inline. | Use a filename for tests, bug reports or build artifacts. |
fullPage |
Boolean; captures the full scrollable page. Cannot be combined with target. |
Use for documentation and long-page layout review. |
target |
An accessibility-snapshot reference or selector identifying one element. | Use for isolated components. |
scale |
css (default) or device. Device scale uses the browser’s device-pixel ratio. |
Use device when you need a higher-resolution image; use CSS scale for predictable pixel dimensions. |
Examples you can give the assistant include:
Go to https://example.com and take a screenshot of the current page.Take a full-page screenshot and save it as homepage.png.Take a screenshot of just the login form.Take a high-resolution WebP screenshot.(The tool call should usescale: "device"andtype: "webp".)
Choose the right capture for the job
| Goal | Capture | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Check what a visitor currently sees | Viewport | Matches the visible browser window. |
| Document every section below the fold | fullPage: true |
Includes the scrollable document. |
| Share one component with a designer | target |
Excludes unrelated page content. |
| Find a button or read page structure | Accessibility snapshot | Provides semantic text and interaction references; a screenshot alone does not. |
Reliable screenshot workflow
- Navigate first. Tell the assistant the exact URL and, if necessary, the steps to reach the state you want.
- Wait for the state you mean to document. Dismiss dialogs, sign in through the permitted flow, expand menus or load data before capturing.
- Inspect structure. Use an accessibility snapshot to verify that the expected heading, form or control exists.
- Select scope. Choose viewport, full page or a target element; never request incompatible
fullPageandtargetsettings together. - Set output explicitly. Name the file and choose type and scale when downstream tools depend on them.
- Review visually. Check clipping, lazy images, cookie dialogs, responsive breakpoints and the saved file location.
Troubleshooting Playwright MCP screenshots
The screenshot tool is missing
Cause: the server did not start, the client loaded a different server, or the installed release exposes a changed tool name. Recheck the client’s MCP configuration, restart the client, and inspect the discovered tool list. Verify the current Playwright MCP documentation before assuming browser_take_screenshot is available.
The browser never opens or the session disconnects
Cause: an invalid command, missing executable, permission problem or an HTTP session that missed its heartbeat. Run the configured server command directly to expose startup errors, confirm the client can reach the HTTP URL, and keep the documented five-second heartbeat in mind for HTTP deployments.

- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
The image is blank or captured too early
Cause: navigation has not completed, content is rendered asynchronously, or the page is blocked. Navigate again, wait until the visible content appears, and use a snapshot to confirm the page state before calling the screenshot tool. A screenshot cannot bypass a login, bot check or network restriction.
target cannot be found
Cause: the selector is not unique, the element is inside a different frame, or the page changed after the snapshot. Take a fresh accessibility snapshot, use its current reference, or supply a stable unique selector supported by your server.
Full-page capture fails with an element target
Cause: the options are incompatible. Remove target for a full-page image, or remove fullPage for an element image.
The file is not where expected
Relative filenames resolve against the workspace root, not necessarily the directory shown in your operating system’s file browser. Use an explicit workspace-relative path and verify the client workspace.

The image is blurry or unexpectedly large
Check scale. CSS scale is the default and gives CSS-pixel dimensions; device scale multiplies dimensions according to the device-pixel ratio and can produce a sharper, larger file. Select the format explicitly if filename inference is not giving the result you need.
Security, privacy and repeatability
- Do not paste credentials, session cookies or private URLs into an untrusted MCP client or server.
- Capture only pages and account states you are authorized to access.
- Remember that screenshots can contain personal data, tokens, customer records and hidden UI; store and share them as sensitive artifacts.
- For repeatable visual checks, keep the URL, viewport/device settings, capture scope, output type and page state consistent. A responsive page can produce different images at different viewport sizes.
Or skip the browser setup
If you only need a clean website image or PDF rather than an interactive browser session, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The API also supports full-page and CSS-selector captures, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does MCP itself take the screenshot?
No. MCP connects the client to tools; the browser MCP server implements the screenshot operation. Playwright MCP documents that operation as browser_take_screenshot, while another server may expose a different name or schema.
Can I use a screenshot as the source for clicking an element?
Use an accessibility snapshot and its element references for interaction. The screenshot is intended for visual inspection.
