To change a Facebook link preview image, change the Open Graph/share image on the webpage you are linking to, publish that page, then submit the complete URL to Facebook Sharing Debugger and select Scrape Again. Facebook normally reads the image from the linked page; the ordinary post composer is not a reliable place to replace it. A fresh scrape updates the information Facebook can retrieve, but it does not guarantee that a card already attached to a published post will change.
What controls the image in a Facebook link preview?
The preview card is built from metadata available on the linked webpage. The publisher-side control is the page’s social-sharing or Open Graph image. Changing a photo inside Facebook after pasting a URL is not the documented solution for an ordinary organic Page post.
Meta announced in July 2017 that Pages other than media publishers would no longer be able to override link metadata such as the headline, description, or image through the API or Page publisher. Meta described Open Graph markup and Sharing Debugger as the way to prepare and preview link attachments. A practitioner guide updated in February 2025 reports the same restriction for organic Page link previews. The exact eligibility of media-publisher exceptions can change, so check current Meta documentation if that distinction affects your Page.
Before you start
- Control of the source page: You need access to the website or CMS that owns the URL. If you do not control it, ask its owner to change the share image.
- The exact public URL: Facebook scrapes the URL you submit. A different protocol, subdomain, path, query string, or redirect can represent a different page.
- A published change: Saving an image in a private draft or media library is not enough. The page must be published so Facebook can retrieve the new metadata.
Change the image step by step
1. Open the page-level sharing settings
In your website builder or CMS, edit the specific page that people will share. Look for a setting named Share image, Social image, Open Graph image, or similar. Labels and locations differ by platform; do not assume that the site’s general logo or default social image is the page’s current value.

2. Choose the new share image
Select or upload the image intended for Facebook’s link card, and save the page’s social metadata. If the page has its own image field, use that rather than changing only a site-wide default. A page-specific value should take precedence for that URL when the platform publishes it correctly.
3. Publish the webpage
Publish or update the page, then open the public URL in a normal browser window. Confirm that you are viewing the live page, not a preview address or an administrator-only version. If your CMS uses separate save and publish actions, complete both.
4. Request a new scrape
- Open Facebook Sharing Debugger.
- Enter the complete public URL, including the correct
https://scheme and path. - Inspect the Link Preview or detected information shown by the tool.
- Select Scrape Again to ask Facebook to retrieve the current page metadata.

5. Create or edit the Facebook post

New posts and existing posts behave differently

If an old post is important and still shows the wrong image, the dependable practical option is usually to create a new post after the source page and scrape have been updated. Do not promise a retroactive repair merely because Sharing Debugger accepts the URL.
If you do not own the linked website
Facebook’s composer cannot give you reliable control over another site’s metadata. Send the site owner the exact URL and explain that its page-level social-sharing/Open Graph image needs to be changed and published. The owner can then request a fresh scrape. You can choose a different URL that you do control, but changing text or adding a different photo to your Facebook post does not replace the link card’s source image.
Troubleshooting an old or missing image
The debugger still shows the previous image
- Reopen the page in your CMS and confirm the new image is assigned to that specific page, not only selected in a draft or global default.
- Publish the page again and verify the public URL.
- In Sharing Debugger, submit the complete URL and select Scrape Again.
- Check that you did not submit a different URL variant, such as a www versus non-www hostname, a redirected address, or a URL with a different path.
The Facebook post still has the old card
That post may already contain an attachment created before the source metadata was refreshed. The available guidance warns that a successful re-scrape does not guarantee a change to an existing published post. Test by creating a new post after the debugger displays the new information.
You changed the site logo but not the preview
A site-wide logo, browser favicon, or article thumbnail is not necessarily the page’s social-sharing image. Return to the page-level setting and update the field used for Facebook/Open Graph sharing.

You cannot find a share-image setting
Platform terminology varies. Search your CMS documentation for “Open Graph,” “social sharing,” or “social image,” or ask the site administrator where page-level sharing metadata is managed. If the platform exposes no such control, its owner or developer may need to add the metadata to the page template.
The preview appears for one URL but not another
Facebook processes the URL it receives, not the page you intended in general. Compare the full strings character by character, including protocol, hostname, path, and query parameters. A redirect can also lead to a different final page.
What not to rely on
- A composer-only image replacement: For ordinary organic Page posts, do not treat a temporary composer control or an image attached to your text as a guaranteed replacement for the link card image.
- Changing only the Facebook caption: Caption text does not alter the metadata Facebook reads from the linked page.
- Assuming a scrape rewrites history: Refreshing retrieved metadata is not the same as editing every attachment already published.
- Guessing at exceptions: Meta’s 2017 policy distinguished media publishers from other Pages, but the sources available here do not establish current eligibility rules. Confirm current Meta documentation if you operate a media Page or use a special publishing integration.

- Confirm that you control the source webpage.
- Set the page’s social-sharing/Open Graph image.
- Save and publish the page.
- Open the live URL to confirm it is publicly reachable.
- Submit that exact URL to Sharing Debugger.
- Inspect the detected preview and select Scrape Again when needed.
- For a reliable test, create a new Facebook post after the new preview appears in the debugger.
