By default, GNU Wget saves a downloaded file in the command’s current working directory—the directory represented by . when Wget starts. To choose a download directory, use -P (or --directory-prefix). To force one exact filename and path, use -O (or --output-document), but understand that -O truncates its target and concatenates multiple downloads into one file.
Find the directory Wget is using now
Wget does not normally save files in a special global “downloads” folder. It writes relative to the process’s current working directory. In a POSIX shell, print that directory with:
pwdRun pwd in the same terminal, script, scheduled job, container, or service context that will launch Wget. A graphical terminal opened in one directory can have a different working directory from another terminal, and a script can change directories before invoking Wget.
The GNU Wget manual describes the default directory prefix as ., meaning the current directory. If you run:

wget https://example.com/file.zipWget normally keeps the filename supplied by the URL and creates file.zip under the directory printed by pwd. If a command has a directory option, recursive-layout option, or a wgetrc setting, that setting can change the final path.
Save a download in a specific directory with -P
Use -P when you want to select a destination directory while retaining Wget’s normal URL-derived filename:
wget -P /path/to/downloads https://example.com/file.zipThe long form is equivalent:
wget --directory-prefix=/path/to/downloads https://example.com/file.zipThe directory prefix is the top of Wget’s local retrieval tree. For a simple, non-recursive URL, the result is normally:
/path/to/downloads/file.zipCreate the directory first when your account does not already have it:

wget -P "$HOME/Downloads" https://example.com/file.zip-P is the safer choice for repeated jobs or scripts that download more than one URL, because each URL keeps its own normal name and Wget can build the required tree below the selected root.

Use a relative destination
A relative prefix is interpreted from the current working directory:
wget -P downloads https://example.com/file.zipIf pwd prints /home/alex/project, the target is under /home/alex/project/downloads. Use an absolute path when a script may be launched from different directories.
Write one exact file with -O
Use -O when the requirement is one explicit output path:
wget -O /path/to/downloads/file.zip https://example.com/file.zipThe long form is:
wget --output-document=/path/to/downloads/file.zip https://example.com/file.zipThis option is not simply a “rename the URL filename” switch. It behaves like shell output redirection:
- The target is truncated immediately when Wget opens it, so an existing file can be overwritten.
- If one command retrieves multiple documents, their contents are concatenated into the same target file.
- It is therefore unsuitable as a general replacement for
-Pin recursive downloads.
Use -O for a single known artifact, such as a generated archive whose exact local name is part of a script’s interface. Use -P when downloading several URLs or when you want Wget to retain URL-derived names.

Control folders during recursive downloads
Recursive retrieval changes the path question. Wget may reproduce parts of the remote URL and may create a directory named after the host. Decide the layout below your chosen prefix with these options:

For example, this recursive command uses /srv/site-copy as the root and suppresses both the host directory and all remote subdirectories:
wget -r -nH -nd -P /srv/site-copy https://example.com/assets/The result is a controlled flat directory, but files with the same basename can collide; Wget uses collision suffixes in this mode. If preserving the remote structure matters, omit -nd. If the host-name directory is the only unwanted level, use -nH without flattening everything.
To trim two leading remote components while retaining the rest:
wget -r --cut-dirs=2 -P /srv/site-copy https://example.com/a/b/c/Think of the options in layers: -P chooses the local root, recursive layout options decide which host and remote-path components appear below it, and -O bypasses normal per-URL naming for one target file.

Set a persistent default in wgetrc
If you want a base directory for ordinary Wget commands, configure the dir_prefix setting in Wget’s startup configuration file, commonly called wgetrc:
dir_prefix = /path/to/downloadsThis is the configuration equivalent of --directory-prefix. It gives commands a default root without requiring -P every time. Keep a command-line -P override in scripts that must write somewhere different, so the script’s destination remains visible at the point of use.
When a file appears in an unexpected place, inspect both the user and system Wget configuration files for dir_prefix or related directory settings. A configuration value can explain a result that is not apparent from the command line alone.
Choose the right method

Troubleshoot an unexpected save location
“Where did Wget save my file?”
- Run
pwdin the same execution context. - Read the command for
-P,--directory-prefix,-O, and--output-document. - Check whether the command is recursive and whether
-nH,-nd,-x, or--cut-dirschanges the tree. - Inspect user and system
wgetrcfiles fordir_prefix.
Wget created a directory named after the host
That is normal for recursive retrieval when host directories are enabled. Add -nH to remove the leading host-name directory. Use --cut-dirs=N when you also need to remove leading remote path components.
The file is in the right folder but has an unexpected name
For ordinary downloads, Wget uses the URL’s filename. If you need one exact name, switch to -O for that single document. Do not use -O to rename every file in a recursive job; its truncation and concatenation behavior can produce one invalid combined file.

The command fails with a permission error
Confirm that the destination exists and that the account running Wget can write to it. A path such as /srv/site-copy may be writable for an administrator but not for an unprivileged account. Choose a directory you own or correct its permissions according to your system’s policy.
An old file disappeared or became shorter
Review every use of -O. Wget opens and truncates that target immediately, so a retry or a command pointed at the same path can replace existing content. Use a distinct filename or -P when you want normal per-download naming.
A script saves to different places on different runs
The script may start in different working directories, or a wgetrc file may define a prefix. Print pwd, use an absolute -P path, and inspect configuration files. These steps remove dependence on the caller’s starting directory.
Operational notes for reliable scripts
- Make the destination explicit: an absolute
-Ppath prevents a scheduler, service, or CI runner from changing the result merely by starting in another directory. - Reserve
-Ofor one artifact: it is deterministic for one URL but dangerous for lists, recursive retrieval, or retries that should preserve separate files. - Plan recursive disk usage: preserving host and remote directories can create many nested paths; flattening with
-ndavoids nesting but introduces basename collisions. - Keep layout flags together: putting
-r,-P,-nH,-nd, or--cut-dirsin the command makes the intended tree reviewable by the next person maintaining it. - Check the result after a change: verify the expected path and filename before wiring the command into a larger pipeline.
