To put an image in a WhatsApp link preview, add an absolute og:image URL to your page’s HTML <head>. For a complete Open Graph object, add matching og:title, og:type, and og:url values, then make sure the image can be fetched from the public URL. WhatsApp may attempt a preview when possible, but correctly written tags do not guarantee that every share will display one.
What WhatsApp uses from Open Graph
Open Graph metadata describes a web page when it is shared. The protocol identifies four basic properties for every page:

Use the property and content attributes, and place the tags in the document head. Add og:image:alt as a concise description of the image. The Open Graph protocol also defines optional image descriptors for a secure URL, MIME type, width, and height.

</head>The image URL should identify the actual file, not a page that displays the file. Use a fully qualified URL with the site’s scheme and hostname. Keep the title, canonical URL, and image consistent with the page so a recipient can tell what the link represents.
How to add the tags, step by step
- Select the representative image. Choose an image that accurately describes the page rather than a generic site logo. Export it at a size that loads quickly and check that it remains readable in a small preview.
- Publish the image at a public, stable URL. Copy the final absolute URL, including the file extension if your server uses one. The URL in
og:imagemust be reachable by a remote fetch; an image that only works after signing in or from a private development machine cannot be used for a public share. - Open the page template or source. Insert the Open Graph tags inside
<head>, before the closing</head>. If your CMS has a social-sharing or SEO panel, use its fields only if it writes equivalentproperty/contenttags into the final HTML. - Set the four core values together. Use the page’s real title,
website(for a typical page), canonical URL, and image URL. Addog:image:altto describe the visual content. - Deploy the page. Test the production URL, not just a local preview. A successful browser load proves that the page is available to you; it does not by itself prove that a WhatsApp fetch will receive the same HTML.
- Inspect the delivered source. View the deployed document source or fetch it with an HTTP client and confirm the tags are present in the returned head. Check for accidental relative URLs, typos in the property names, or a template that emits duplicate and conflicting values.
Image limits and document placement
A WhatsApp-specific documentation mirror updated November 5, 2025, reports these recommendations: keep the metadata within the first 300 KB of the HTML, use an image under 600 KB, make it at least 300 pixels wide, and keep its width-to-height aspect ratio at 4:1 or less. Treat those numbers as guidance from that mirror, not as independently confirmed, current WhatsApp guarantees. If exact platform limits are business-critical, verify them against current WhatsApp-owned documentation.
- First 300 KB: Put the tags in the initial server-rendered head rather than injecting them only after client-side JavaScript runs.
- Under 600 KB: Compress the selected image while preserving legible text and important details.
- At least 300 pixels wide: Avoid tiny source files that become unreadable in a preview.
- Aspect ratio no wider than 4:1: Extremely panoramic banners may not fit the preview well; crop or pad them to a more balanced shape.
The mirror also says an 80-character description is sufficient. That statement is guidance from the same third-party page, not a guarantee about how WhatsApp truncates text in every client.

<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">Use these only when the values describe the file you actually serve. They supplement og:image; they do not replace it. The protocol says that an og:image:alt description should accompany an image declaration, so retain the alt property even when you add dimensions or MIME type.

Why a preview can still be missing
Open Graph describes the page; it does not control every decision made by a messaging client. WhatsApp-specific documentation says previews are attempted when possible, and current cache behavior, crawler timing, user-agent details, and accepted image formats are not established here. Use the following checks without assuming that any one of them can force a refresh.
The image URL is not absolute
Symptom: The page has an og:image tag, but its value starts with /images/ or another relative path.
Fix: Replace it with the complete URL, such as https://example.com/images/share-image.jpg, and deploy the change.

The tags are outside the head or injected too late
Symptom: Your browser’s live DOM shows the tags, but the original document source does not.
Fix: Render the metadata in the server response or static HTML head. Do not rely solely on a script that adds tags after page load, and keep the markup early in the document.

The image cannot be fetched publicly
Symptom: The URL works only in your logged-in browser, on a private network, or after a temporary token expires.
Fix: Host a stable, publicly reachable file and update og:image to that URL. Check redirects, access controls, and the deployed hostname.
The file is too large or oddly shaped
Symptom: The image loads slowly, appears cropped unexpectedly, or is ignored.
Fix: Apply the mirror’s under-600-KB and at-least-300-pixel recommendations, and keep the width-to-height ratio at 4:1 or less. These are practical targets, not a promise that WhatsApp will always display the result.
The page has conflicting metadata
Symptom: A framework, SEO plugin, and hand-written template each emit different titles or images.

Fix: Inspect the final HTML and remove duplicate or contradictory Open Graph declarations. Keep one coherent set for the page.

The old preview remains
Symptom: A previous share still shows an earlier image after you change the tags.
Fix: Confirm the production source and image URL first. WhatsApp cache invalidation and refresh timing are not documented here, so do not promise that a particular URL parameter, bot, or cache-clearing trick will update an existing conversation. A new share may be needed, and the result can vary by client and timing.
Check the final HTML before sharing
- The four core properties are present:
og:title,og:type,og:url, andog:image. - Every value matches the page being shared.
og:imageis an absolute URL to the intended file.og:image:altdescribes the image in plain language.- The tags occur in the HTML head and, following the third-party mirror’s recommendation, within the first 300 KB.
- The image is publicly reachable, under the mirror’s stated 600-KB recommendation, at least 300 pixels wide, and no wider than a 4:1 ratio.
- The production source contains the tags without relying on post-load JavaScript.

Do I need to add an image tag in the page body?
No. WhatsApp’s link preview reads the Open Graph declaration in the HTML head. A visible body image can improve the page itself, but it does not substitute for og:image.

Can I use a relative image path?
Use an absolute URL. The WhatsApp-specific guidance describes og:image as an absolute image URL, and an absolute value avoids ambiguity about the host and scheme.
Is a 600-KB image an official WhatsApp limit?
It is a recommendation reported by a third-party documentation mirror updated November 5, 2025, not an independently confirmed first-party requirement.
Will changing the tag immediately update links already sent?
Not necessarily. Cache behavior and refresh timing were not confirmed from a WhatsApp-owned source, so validate the deployed HTML but avoid treating an existing conversation as a guaranteed real-time test.
