To save a URL as a clickable link, select the text or image that should open the page, choose Insert > Link (or Hyperlink), paste the web address into the address field, and apply it. If showing the full address is acceptable, type the URL and press Space, Enter, or Return; Microsoft Word and many Office apps convert it to an active hyperlink automatically.

The right method depends on your goal: create a friendly titled link in a document, copy a URL for sharing, or keep a page one tap away on your phone. The steps below cover each case without changing the destination address.

What “save a URL as a link” can mean

People use “save a URL as a link” for three different actions:

  • Document hyperlink: words such as open the project brief are clickable and lead to a URL.
  • Copied or shared URL: you copy the address itself to a message, note, or another app.
  • Persistent shortcut: the page gets an icon on your phone’s Home Screen for one-tap access.

A hyperlink stores a destination address separately from its visible label. Changing the label does not change the URL, and copying a hyperlink may produce either the label plus address or only the address depending on the application.

How to save a URL as a clickable link in Microsoft Word

Desktop Word: custom words or an image

  1. Open the document and select the words that should be clickable. To link an image, click the image instead.
  2. Choose Insert > Link. You can also right-click the selection and choose Link (sometimes labeled Hyperlink).
  3. Enter the destination in the Address field. Include the complete address, such as https://example.com/help.
  4. If needed, edit Text to display. Use a short, descriptive label rather than “click here.”
  5. Choose OK or Insert. Test the result using Word’s normal follow-link action (often Ctrl-click on Windows or Command-click on macOS).

For an email address, enter a mailto: address when your version of Word supports it. For a location in the same document, select a heading or bookmark from the link dialog instead of entering a web address.

Automatic linking in desktop Word

When you type a valid web address and immediately press Enter or the Spacebar, Word normally turns it into an active hyperlink. This is the quickest way to keep the full URL visible. If it remains plain text, check that automatic formatting for Internet and network paths is enabled in Word’s proofing or AutoCorrect settings, or use Insert > Link manually.

Edit, remove, or inspect a Word hyperlink

  • Right-click the link and choose Edit Link to change the label or destination.
  • Choose Remove Link to keep the visible words but remove click behavior.
  • Hover over the link to inspect the destination before opening it; this helps detect a mistyped domain.

How to save a URL as a link in Word for the web

  1. Select the text or image.
  2. Choose Insert > Link.
  3. Enter the display text and web address in the fields.
  4. Apply the link, then select it to verify the destination.

If the full URL is suitable as the visible text, type it directly and press Space or Enter for automatic linking. Word for the web may show a compact link card or preview; the underlying hyperlink is still the address you entered.

How to save a URL as a link on Android, iPhone, or iPad Office

Full URL as the visible text

In a mobile Office document, type a valid web address and press Return. The app should convert it into a link. Tap the link to open it or to reveal editing controls.

Friendly title instead of the long address

  1. Select the words (or tap an image) that should open the page.
  2. Open the editing ribbon and choose Insert > Link. The exact location differs between Android and iPhone/iPad; expanding the ribbon or tapping the three-dot menu may reveal it.
  3. Enter the label in the text field and paste the URL into the address field.
  4. Insert the link and test it in reading or view mode.

On a small screen, paste the address carefully: a trailing space, line break, or punctuation mark can become part of the link. If tapping opens the wrong page, edit the link and remove the extra character.

How to paste a URL as a titled link in Microsoft Edge

Edge can copy a page as a hyperlink with its title, or as the raw address. This is useful when moving a page from the browser into an email, document, or chat.

  1. In Edge, focus the address bar, copy the page address, and switch to the destination app.
  2. Press Ctrl+V to paste the titled hyperlink when Edge’s link format is selected. The pasted text uses the page title while retaining the URL.
  3. Press Ctrl+Shift+V, or choose Paste as > Plain text, to paste only the web address.

Choose Edge’s default paste format

Open Settings > Appearance > Browser behavior and features > Change URL copy and paste format. Select the behavior you prefer. A titled link is cleaner in reports and messages; plain text is easier to inspect, edit, or feed into a command.

How to copy and save a URL from the Google app

Android

  1. Open the result or page in the Google app.
  2. Tap More, then Copy link.
  3. Paste the address into a note, message, document, or browser address bar.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the page in the Google app.
  2. Tap Share, then Copy URL.
  3. Paste it wherever you need the link.

Copying a URL preserves the address, not a custom display name. To create a titled link after copying, use the Insert-Link dialog in the destination app.

How to save a website link to an iPhone Home Screen

Use this when you want a persistent shortcut rather than a link inside a document.

  1. Open the page in Safari on your iPhone.
  2. Open the page menu and tap Share.
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen.
  4. Review the name and tap Add. Enable Open as Web App if you want the shortcut to open in a web-app style window.

The icon stores a shortcut to the current address. It does not download an offline copy, so the page can still change or become unavailable.

Choosing the right method

Goal Best method Visible result
Readable link in a report Word Insert > Link Friendly title or image
Show the exact address Type URL and press Space/Enter, or paste as plain text Raw URL
Copy from Edge with a page name Ctrl+V using Edge’s link format Titled hyperlink
Share from a phone Google app Copy link/Copy URL URL ready to paste
One-tap personal access on iPhone Safari Add to Home Screen Home-screen icon

Troubleshooting: when the saved link does not work

The text is not clickable

Use the explicit Insert > Link command instead of relying on automatic formatting. In Word desktop, verify that automatic hyperlink formatting for Internet addresses is enabled. In a mobile app, press Return after the URL or open the Insert menu.

The link opens the wrong page

Edit the hyperlink and compare the address character by character. Check the protocol (https://), spelling, path, query string, and fragments after #. Remove accidental punctuation or spaces at the end.

The pasted result shows a title when you wanted the URL

In Edge, use Ctrl+Shift+V or Paste as > Plain text. You can also change the default under Settings > Appearance > Browser behavior and features > Change URL copy and paste format.

The URL is very long

A long address is not automatically unsafe or invalid. Use a descriptive label in a document, but inspect the full destination before opening it. Do not remove query parameters unless you know the site does not need them.

The link works for you but not for another person

The destination may require a sign-in, organization permission, or a session cookie. Send the base page and explain the required access rather than copying a session-specific address. Private or expiring links can stop working after their owner changes permissions.

Formatting disappears when pasted

Some chat boxes and plain-text fields intentionally remove hyperlink styling. Paste into a rich-text editor or send the full URL so the recipient can copy it. A raw URL can remain usable even when formatting is stripped.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to turn a URL into a clean image or PDF rather than place it in a document, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A minimal cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Options include full-page capture with lazy images, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper and page settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector hiding, waits for a selector/delay/network idle, blocking ads or resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names from other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make an image open a URL when clicked?

Yes. Select the image in Word or another rich-text editor, choose Insert > Link, enter the destination in the Address field, and apply it.

Does saving a URL create an offline copy of the page?

No. A hyperlink or Home Screen shortcut stores a destination address. The page still requires a network connection unless the destination app separately supports offline content.

Why does my phone show Copy URL instead of Copy link?

The label depends on the app and platform. Google uses Copy link on Android and Share > Copy URL on iPhone or iPad; both place the page address on the clipboard.
