For most large-scale HTML scraping, SEO monitoring, price tracking, and market research, start with residential proxies. Choose mobile proxies when the carrier network itself matters—for example, testing mobile search results, mobile apps, or carrier-specific localization—or when tests show that a target responds better to them. Neither type guarantees access: compare successful responses, challenges, latency, retries, and cost on the sites you actually need to reach.
What is the difference between residential and mobile proxies?
The defining difference is where the proxy IP comes from. A residential proxy uses an IP associated with a household broadband internet service provider. A mobile proxy uses an IP assigned by a cellular carrier through SIM-backed 3G, 4G, or 5G infrastructure. Proxyway describes these respective sources as household ISP and mobile-carrier IP addresses (Proxyway); ProxyVero likewise identifies IP origin as the central distinction (ProxyVero).
That difference affects how a request appears to a website, but it does not make one proxy type universally faster, safer, or more successful. Carrier-grade NAT can place many mobile subscribers behind one public address. Residential addresses more commonly represent household connections and may remain stable for hours or days; mobile IPs may change after a reconnect, tower handoff, or carrier load balancing.
At a glance: how the trade-offs compare
| Factor | Residential proxies | Mobile proxies |
|---|---|---|
| IP source | Household broadband ISP | Cellular carrier, through SIM-backed infrastructure |
| Best fit | Broad HTML scraping, catalogs, SERP monitoring, price tracking, and market research | Mobile-first targets, app-oriented work, carrier-specific tests, or mobile presentation checks |
| Geography and identity | Usually the practical choice for broad country or city coverage | Useful when carrier or mobile-network presentation is part of the requirement |
| Typical latency | 30–120 ms, as reported by ProxyVero in 2026 | 80–300 ms, as reported by ProxyVero in 2026 |
| Throughput | Generally higher bandwidth, according to ProxyVero | Generally lower bandwidth, according to ProxyVero |
| Session behavior | Often steadier for longer crawls | May change with reconnects and carrier conditions |
| Common pricing basis | Often billed by bandwidth; typically cheaper per gigabyte | May be billed by SIM, port, session, or gigabyte; generally costs more |
The latency ranges and general comparisons in the table are ProxyVero’s reported figures, not guarantees for a particular provider, destination, time, or setup (ProxyVero). Actual results depend on the route, target, provider, and request workload.

When should you choose residential proxies?
Residential proxies are the sensible starting point when the goal is to collect public web pages at scale and carrier identity is not part of the test. Their combination of broad pool coverage, generally higher bandwidth, steadier sessions, and lower per-gigabyte cost often suits workloads where you need many successful requests rather than a specific mobile-network view.
- Large catalogs: Gather product-page or listing data across many URLs, subject to the sites’ terms and your permitted request rates.
- SEO and SERP monitoring: Check search results across locations when household-style IPs meet the geographic requirement.
- Price intelligence: Track prices and availability across a broad set of pages.
- Market research: Collect public-facing information from multiple regions without needing a cellular carrier’s identity.
Residential does not mean a static address or a guaranteed clean session. Ask providers what locations, rotation controls, and session persistence they actually offer, then confirm that those capabilities fit your collection job.
When are mobile proxies worth choosing?
Use mobile proxies when the test depends on traffic appearing to come through a cellular carrier or on a mobile network’s presentation. The extra cost and potentially less stable routing make less sense if your only requirement is general-purpose HTML collection.
- Mobile app testing: Validate what an app-facing service returns through a carrier connection.
- In-app ad verification: Check an advertising experience where mobile-network context is relevant.
- Mobile search results: Test mobile-oriented results when carrier or mobile presentation affects the question.
- Carrier-specific localization: Verify a result tied to a particular carrier or mobile-network identity.
Do not assume that a mobile IP automatically solves blocking on a protected consumer website. Proxy type is one signal among several, and a carrier IP can still encounter rate limits, CAPTCHAs, or other challenges.

Will mobile proxies be harder to block?
Not as a universal rule. Mobile carrier IPs can blend into pools of ordinary subscriber traffic, and shared addressing can mean an IP is used by many people. That can be useful in some contexts, but a website may still assess request volume, timing, cookies, browser fingerprints, ASN and DNS consistency, and session behavior. Residential IPs can also be challenged or blocked.
ProxyVero’s June 2026 seven-day Generic HTTPS baseline reported these provider results: Smartproxy at 100% success and 436 ms average latency; Oxylabs at 99.4% and 357 ms; Bright Data at 99.4% and 3,442 ms; and IPRoyal at 98.8% and 464 ms. These are one publisher’s measurements for its stated baseline, not a controlled comparison of mobile against residential proxies, nor a promise of results on your target (ProxyVero).

For a protected target, test both proxy types against the same pages and collection pattern. Measure successful responses, challenge rate, latency, retries, and total cost. Do not use a provider’s advertised pool size as a substitute for those results.
How to choose for your workload
- Write down what the target must see. If it needs a household ISP location, begin with residential. If it needs a cellular carrier or mobile-network presentation, test mobile.
- Run a small, permitted pilot. Use representative URLs, locations, request timing, and session lengths. Avoid treating a test on one page or at one time as proof of broad access.
- Track the useful outcomes. Record successful responses, blocks or challenges, latency, retries, and the data volume or sessions consumed.
- Calculate cost per successful request. Include proxy charges and the cost of retries, failed requests, and operational handling—not only the advertised rate.
- Choose the least costly setup that meets the need. If mobile makes no measurable difference to the required outcome, residential is usually the more practical default. If carrier context materially changes the result, mobile may justify the added expense.
For long authenticated sessions
Favor stable or sticky sessions where the provider supports them, and keep the browser, device, and network fingerprints consistent throughout a session. Frequent IP changes alongside unchanged account and browser signals can make a session less coherent; a proxy alone does not provide session continuity.

Latency, throughput, and reliability in practice
ProxyVero reports typical residential latency of 30–120 ms and mobile latency of 80–300 ms, with residential generally offering higher bandwidth (ProxyVero). Treat these as directional reference ranges, not service-level targets. The actual time to retrieve a page also includes DNS lookup, TLS setup, the destination server, response size, and any rendering or browser work.
For a crawl, a modest difference in per-request latency may matter less than the rate of successful responses and the amount of retrying required. Conversely, for a carrier-specific check, the right network identity matters more than raw throughput. Test using the exact protocol, location, authentication flow, and session strategy you plan to run.
Cost: compare successful work, not just the rate card
Residential service is commonly bandwidth-billed and usually cheaper per gigabyte. Mobile service may be priced by SIM, port, session, or gigabyte and generally costs more, according to ProxyVero (ProxyVero). Provider pricing and what is included vary, so compare current terms directly before committing.
A useful comparison is total proxy cost divided by successful, usable responses. A cheaper plan that triggers frequent challenges or retries may cost more per useful result. A costlier mobile option is justified only if its carrier context improves the outcome your project actually needs.
Check sourcing, consent, and acceptable use
Ask a provider how its IPs are sourced, how consent is obtained and recorded, what happens when an IP is disputed, and how abuse reports are handled. The FBI warns that residential proxy networks may be built through consent-based SDK partnerships, hidden VPN terms, compromised IoT devices, malware, or passive-income schemes. It also describes criminal misuse including phishing, fake-account creation, brute-force attacks, purchase-limit bypass, and account takeovers (FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center).
Rank #3
The FBI notes that residential proxies are used in criminal activity; that warning does not mean every residential proxy provider or network is illicit. It does mean that sourcing and abuse controls belong in the purchase decision, not just the fine print. Confirm that your own collection complies with the destination site’s terms, privacy obligations, applicable law, and reasonable request limits.
Avoid free proxy lists for sensitive work. Proxyway warns that shared free proxies can expose users to malicious advertising or malware (Proxyway). A low or zero sticker price is not worth risking credentials, data integrity, or a machine used for production work.

Proxies route network requests; they do not by themselves produce a rendered screenshot. If your actual task is to capture pages as images or PDFs rather than collect HTML through a proxy pool, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, with one-request capture and clean shots. It does not replace a residential or mobile proxy provider for a scraping workload.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot capture, send a GET request to the API. Replace the example URL with the page you need and provide your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month—no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a residential proxy use a home internet connection?
Its IP is associated with a household broadband ISP; the service routes your request through an address in its residential proxy network.
Does choosing mobile guarantee that a site will show its mobile version?
No. A proxy changes the network route and IP context. The page presentation may also depend on the browser, user agent, device settings, and the site’s own behavior.
Can I use a proxy for any website I want to scrape?
No. Check the site’s terms, applicable privacy rules and law, and any access limits before collecting data.
