The best way to capture a complete web page depends on what “complete” means for your project. Use a full-page screenshot for a pixel-accurate visual record, a PDF for a paginated document, Firefox’s “Web page, complete” for an offline bundle, or a DOM/accessibility export for text and structure. Dynamic pages require explicit waits, scrolling, or interaction before you save the result.

Before capturing, write down the URL, timestamp, browser or tool version, viewport size, and whether you were signed in. That context distinguishes a snapshot from the changing live page.
Capture a full-page screenshot in Firefox
Developer Tools
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Open Developer Tools and enable the toolbox button named Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click the button. Firefox saves the image in your Downloads directory.
Web Console command
Open the Web Console and run:

You can control difficult captures with options such as --delay (wait before capture), --dpr (device-pixel ratio), --filename (output name), and --selector (capture one element). For example:

Use a delay after animations or lazy loading have started. A full-page image can still omit content hidden behind a menu, tab, carousel, login wall, or cross-origin frame.

Automate full-page screenshots with Playwright
Playwright defines a full-page screenshot as the full scrollable page, “as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” Navigate, perform required interactions, wait for the target content, then capture.

The CLI supports PNG, JPEG and WebP output. Use --hires when you need device pixels rather than CSS pixels. For repeatability, set a fixed viewport, wait for a meaningful selector, and disable or settle animations in page-specific code.
Save a page and its assets for offline use
- In Firefox, open the page and choose File → Save Page As (or the equivalent page-save command).
- Select Web page, complete.
- Choose a destination and save. Firefox creates an HTML file and a companion directory containing downloaded pictures and other resources.
- Disconnect networking and reopen the file if offline fidelity matters.
This option is useful for reference copies, but Mozilla warns that it may not keep the original HTML link structure. “Web page, HTML only” saves one HTML file without pictures; text export keeps readable text but not the original HTML structure. Login-only content, scripts, cross-origin resources and server-side behavior commonly fail offline.

Export a complete page as PDF

This writes a PDF in the current working directory. Add --no-pdf-header-footer to remove print headers and footers. Use --timeout=5000 to wait up to five seconds, or --virtual-time-budget=42000 when time-dependent page code must advance before printing:

Review page breaks, selectable text, fonts, margins and print headers. A PDF is a document representation, not a guarantee of screen-identical pixels.
Capture text or structure instead of pixels
Chrome DOM dump

--dump-dom prints the serialized DOM after Chrome parses the HTML and executes scripts that alter it. That differs from downloading raw HTML with curl.

Accessibility snapshots
Use an accessibility snapshot when the goal is page structure, roles or readable content for analysis and automation. Use a screenshot when layout, charts, canvas or visual defects are the evidence you need.
Handle lazy loading and interactive content
- Wait for a selector that proves the needed section exists, not merely for the initial navigation event.
- Scroll through the page before capture when images load only near the viewport.
- Open tabs, accordions, menus or “load more” controls that contain material you need.
- Allow charts and animations to settle; Firefox’s
--delay, Chrome’s--timeout/--virtual-time-budget, and Playwright waits provide different ways to do this. - Record whether the page was authenticated and whether an iframe or resource was blocked by cross-origin policy.
A single full-page image cannot include content that was never rendered, is hidden behind an interaction you did not perform, or failed to load.
Verify the artifact
- Inspect the bottom and middle of the image or PDF, not just the first viewport.
- Check lazy-loaded images, embedded frames, charts and sticky headers for omissions or duplication.
- Reopen an offline bundle with networking disabled when offline behavior is important.
- For PDFs, test page breaks, fonts, text selection and headers/footers.
- Keep the original URL and capture time beside the saved file.
Common failures and fixes
The image ends at the first screen
Use Firefox’s entire-page command, Playwright’s fullPage/full_page, or the CLI’s --full-page. Confirm that the page itself has more scrollable content.

Images or charts are blank
Wait for the relevant selector, scroll to trigger lazy loading, and allow time for fonts, canvas and animation to render. A network-idle event alone may not mean application rendering is finished.
Sticky navigation appears repeatedly
Hide or temporarily disable the sticky element with page-specific CSS, or capture the main content element rather than the entire document. Verify that removing it does not remove information you need.
The PDF layout differs from the screen
Print CSS, page size, margins and pagination intentionally produce a different representation. Use a full-page image when visual fidelity matters; use PDF when reading and printing matter.
The offline copy is broken
“Complete” saves downloaded resources, not the server, authentication system or every cross-origin dependency. Test offline, keep the live URL, and use a PDF or screenshot when behavior cannot be reproduced.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Large full-page images consume more memory and storage than viewport captures; use WebP or JPEG when lossless PNG is unnecessary.
- Waiting for network idle can be slow on pages with analytics or persistent connections; a specific selector or bounded delay is often more predictable.
- Authenticated captures require secure handling of cookies and authorization headers. Never embed credentials in a shared command or public URL.
- For recurring jobs, save deterministic settings: URL, viewport, device scale, browser version, waits and output format.
- Capture after consent handling when your goal is the visitor-facing page, but preserve a separate raw or authenticated workflow when legal or audit requirements demand it.
