Keep the file under 600 KB, make it at least 300 pixels wide, and keep its width-to-height ratio at or below 4:1. The 1200 × 630 canvas is a third-party cross-platform recommendation, not a dimension WhatsApp mandates. WhatsApp describes previews as best-effort, so meeting the limits improves the odds but cannot guarantee a preview or identical rendering on every device.
The size to use
A 1200 × 630 px landscape image is a sensible default when the same artwork will be shared on WhatsApp and other social platforms. Its 1.91:1 ratio leaves room for a headline, brand mark, and safe margins without approaching WhatsApp’s documented 4:1 maximum.
Do not confuse that recommendation with an official required canvas. The WhatsApp link-preview developer text reproduced by ChatArchitect (page marked updated November 5, 2025) gives limits rather than a preferred 1200 × 630 dimension. OpenGraphPlus recommends 1200 × 630 for general Open Graph sharing; that is the basis for the practical target here.

For example, 1200 × 630, 1200 × 628, or 800 × 420 all stay close to the recommended shape. A 1200 × 300 banner is 4:1 and sits at the documented upper boundary; a 1200 × 200 image is 6:1 and should be redesigned.
Build the page metadata correctly
WhatsApp fetches the shared page with an HTTP GET request and a WhatsApp user-agent string. Put the Open Graph tags in the initial HTML response, inside the document’s <head>, so a crawler can see them without running your client-side application.

</head>Use an absolute, fetchable image URL
The og:image value should include the complete HTTPS address, not a relative path such as /images/share-image.jpg. Confirm that the URL responds without login, a session cookie, a robots-blocking rule, or a redirect chain that your hosting setup mishandles. The page URL in og:url should be the canonical URL you want people to share.
Keep required values non-empty
The reproduced documentation says og:title, og:description, and og:url should not be empty. A short description is enough for the one or two lines shown with the preview; it does not need to be a full article excerpt.
Do not rely on JavaScript injection
Aback Tools reports that tags inserted only after JavaScript executes can fail to produce a preview. Render the tags server-side or include them in the static HTML response. This matters especially for single-page applications whose first response contains an almost empty shell.

Prepare and compress the image
- Design at 1200 × 630 px. Keep important text and logos away from the edges because WhatsApp may crop or scale the artwork.
- Export as JPEG, PNG, or WebP. Choose the format that preserves your design while keeping the final file below 600 KB.
- Check the actual byte size. Pixel dimensions alone do not tell you whether the file meets the limit. Photos often need quality reduction; flat graphics may compress better as PNG or WebP.
- Optionally target below 300 KB. This is a cautious optimization suggested by Aback Tools, not a WhatsApp rule. Do not degrade legibility merely to reach that lower figure.
- Verify the ratio. Divide width by height. The result must not exceed 4.0.
- Publish over HTTPS and test the public URL. A file that works only on your local machine cannot be fetched by WhatsApp.
OpenGraphPlus reports observed display differences by width: images below 100 px may become text-only, 100–300 px images may appear as small thumbnails, and images at 300 px or wider may receive a larger treatment. Those are third-party observations, not official display thresholds, so use them as diagnostics rather than guarantees.

How WhatsApp fetches and displays a preview
When someone pastes a link, WhatsApp attempts to retrieve the page and assemble a card from its metadata. Its reproduced developer guidance says it may relax requirements, look for other HTML markup, or fall back to a small link preview. It explicitly says preview generation is not guaranteed to work or continue to work.
Rendering can therefore vary between Android, iOS, and WhatsApp Web, and between a fresh URL and a URL whose preview is cached. A compliant image can still produce a small card or no image when the page is temporarily unavailable, the crawler is blocked, or the service chooses a fallback.
Verify a link before you send it
- Deploy the page and image at their public HTTPS URLs.
- Open the page source, not only the browser’s rendered inspector, and confirm the four tags are present in
<head>. - Request the image URL directly. Check for a successful response, the intended content type, and a file size below 600 KB.
- Paste the page URL into a WhatsApp conversation and wait for the preview to appear above the composer before sending.
- If no preview appears after about 10 seconds, recheck the metadata, absolute URL, dimensions, ratio, and file size. The timing is a troubleshooting check described in the documentation, not a promise that every preview loads within 10 seconds.
After changing an image or its metadata, test a URL variant or allow time for cached data to expire. WhatsApp does not provide a guaranteed, user-controlled cache purge for every page.
Troubleshooting common failures
No preview at all
- Cause: Missing tags, empty title/description/URL, or tags outside the initial head.
- Fix: Add the server-rendered markup shown above and inspect the raw response.
Preview appears without an image
- Cause: The image URL is relative, inaccessible, blocked by authentication, or returns an error.
- Fix: Use a public absolute HTTPS URL and request it independently from the page.
Image is ignored or replaced by a small card
- Cause: Width below 300 px, file at or above 600 KB, ratio above 4:1, or an unavailable resource.
- Fix: Resize to at least 300 px wide, compress below 600 KB, and redesign extreme banners. WhatsApp may still choose a fallback because rendering is best-effort.
Preview is text-only or unusually small
- Cause: Very narrow artwork or a platform-specific layout decision.
- Fix: Try the 1200 × 630 target. Treat OpenGraphPlus’s width observations as guidance, not a guaranteed threshold.
Old artwork keeps appearing
- Cause: Cached preview data.
- Fix: Change the image URL (for example, use a versioned filename), test in a new chat, and allow caches to refresh. Avoid assuming that editing the file behind the same URL immediately invalidates every cached copy.

Can I use a square image?
A square image has a 1:1 ratio and does not violate the documented 4:1 ceiling. Whether it receives the layout you expect remains subject to WhatsApp’s best-effort rendering.
