If you mean a normal photo elsewhere on the site, select it and choose Change image instead.
First, identify which “thumbnail” you mean
GoDaddy’s editor does not document one universal control labeled “website thumbnail.” The right procedure depends on where the image appears:
| What you want to change | GoDaddy control | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Large image at the top of the home page | Cover Media | The home-page header or hero image |
| Photo in a section, gallery, or another page | Change image | That individual photo |
| Image shown when a site link is shared | Change the site’s main/header image, publish, then check the destination platform | Potential social link preview; behavior varies by platform |
| Facebook business-page information connected to the site | Facebook connection and the site’s main image | GoDaddy says the connected page displays the site’s main image and information |
The official instructions specifically describe the header image, ordinary site photos, and Facebook’s connected-page display. They do not establish a separate thumbnail override for every social network. Changing a header image is therefore the best-documented starting point when your goal is a shared-link preview, but the receiving platform controls how and when that preview is rendered.
Change the home-page thumbnail (header image)
These steps use the current Websites + Marketing editor labels documented by GoDaddy.

- Sign in to GoDaddy. Open your account and go to the product page.
- Open the site manager. In Websites + Marketing, find the site and select Manage.
- Enter the editor. Choose Edit Website.
- Select the home-page header. Click the large image area at the top of the home page. The editing panel should expose Cover Media.
- Choose Cover Media. Add a new file or select an image from the available sources. GoDaddy lists recently added images, royalty-free stock images, collections, social-media images, and your media library as possible choices; you can also upload your own supported image. The exact choices shown can depend on the editor and account.
- Add an image description if prompted. This helps describe the image for visitors and accessibility. GoDaddy’s instructions do not say that the description itself changes a social-preview thumbnail.
- Save and publish. Select Publish so the new header is live at your public site address.
GoDaddy’s photo instructions cover this workflow in Add or replace a photo on my website. Its setup guidance also identifies Cover Media as the header-image control in Set up my Websites + Marketing site.
Replace a regular photo on any page
Use this route when the “thumbnail” is actually a card image, section photo, gallery item, or another image inside a page rather than the home-page header.
- Sign in, choose Manage for the site under Websites + Marketing, and select Edit Website.
- Navigate to the page containing the photo.
- Select the image and choose Change image.
- Pick an image from your recent files, media library, stock or collection options, social-media images, or upload a replacement.
- Complete the edit and select Publish.
This changes only the selected image. It does not create a separate, site-wide social-thumbnail rule.

If you mean an image beside a shared link
A shared-link preview is assembled by the destination service after it fetches your public page. GoDaddy’s documented approach is to update the site’s main image, publish the site, and then check the destination. For Facebook, GoDaddy says a connected business page displays the site’s main image and information; see Connect my Facebook business page to my Websites + Marketing site or Digital Marketing plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat Facebook guidance does not promise an immediate refresh, and it does not establish identical behavior for other networks. After publishing:
- Open the public URL in a private browser window to confirm that the new image is live.
- Paste the URL into the platform where you share it and inspect the preview before posting.
- If the old image remains, allow for the platform’s own preview cache and try its link-refresh or debugger feature if one is available. The timing and controls belong to that platform, not to GoDaddy’s editor.
Do not confuse this with GoDaddy Online Store’s social-share buttons. Those settings add Facebook and Twitter sharing controls to product pages; they are not documented as a thumbnail-image setting. The distinction is explained in Add social share links on my product pages in my Online Store.

Prepare or resize an image before uploading
If your replacement needs text, branding, or a particular canvas size, GoDaddy’s Content Creator can produce an image file that you then upload to the site or use in a social post. Its workflow is described in Create a social media or website image.
- Use a clear subject that remains recognizable when the preview is displayed small.
- Keep important wording away from the edges because different layouts can crop the image.
- Choose PNG when you need transparency; GoDaddy notes that JPEG or PNG selection affects quality and file size.
- Export the file, return to Cover Media or Change image, upload it, and publish the site.
Content Creator creates an image asset; it does not by itself change the image used by your GoDaddy site. You still have to select the resulting file in the editor and publish.
What to check after publishing
- Public page: Load the live URL, not just the editor preview, and verify the header or replacement photo.
- Correct page: Confirm that you edited the intended page and image. A regular page photo will not alter the home-page header.
- Mobile crop: Check a narrow viewport because a header image may be framed differently on small screens.
- Shared-link preview: Test the exact URL you plan to share. A platform may retain an earlier preview even after the public page has changed.
- Facebook connection: If you use a connected Facebook business page, confirm that the connection points to the current site and that the site has been published. GoDaddy’s Facebook instructions recommend publishing when the page needs to reflect recent information.
Troubleshooting
The new image is visible in the editor but not on the live site
The change has probably not been published, or you are viewing an old browser copy. Select Publish, open the public address in a private window, and test again. If the old image still appears only in your normal browser, clear that browser’s cached page data.

I cannot find Cover Media
Cover Media belongs to the home-page header. Navigate to the home page in Edit Website and select the large header area itself. If you selected a normal image, the available command is Change image instead.
Changing a page photo did not change the link preview
That is expected when the shared preview uses the site’s main/header image. Replace the home-page header through Cover Media, publish, and then recheck the destination platform. GoDaddy does not document a universal per-network thumbnail field.
The social post still shows the old thumbnail
First verify the new image at the public URL. If the page is current but the social post is not, the destination service may have cached its earlier fetch. Use that service’s refresh or debugger control when available; GoDaddy does not specify a refresh time for third-party previews.

The image looks cropped or the text is cut off
Preview the published page at both desktop and mobile widths. Rework the source in Content Creator with the important subject or text nearer the center, then replace the header image and publish again. Different layouts can crop the same source differently.
I expected a Facebook or Twitter button to change the image
Online Store’s social-share settings add sharing buttons to product pages. They do not document a thumbnail replacement. Use the site editor’s image controls for the visual asset itself.

If you only need a clean, repeatable screenshot of the published site for checking a thumbnail, documentation, or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not edit your GoDaddy settings; it captures the public result after you publish. Cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status.
The API accepts one GET request. Replace the example URL with your published GoDaddy site address and keep your access key private. Full parameter documentation is at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.example.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo includes full-page capture with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF output, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, selector hiding, waits for selectors or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, then Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000, and Business at $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can inspect the published page without your manually configuring a browser.
