If a Cypress snapshot is missing, first identify which artifact you expected: a saved-value snapshot, a visual-regression baseline, or a Cypress screenshot. Those are created by different commands and stored by different systems. Then verify Cypress discovered and ran the spec, confirm the command that should create the artifact, and inspect the configured output path before changing a baseline.
“Snapshot” can mean three different Cypress artifacts
Do not install a plugin or regenerate a file until you know which kind is absent. Cypress core does not provide one universal snapshot-file system.
Saved-value snapshot
A plugin or custom command may serialize an object, string, array, HTML fragment, or application state and compare it on later runs. The historical @cypress/snapshot article shows one implementation, but its commands and setup are not a current guarantee of Cypress itself. Check your installed package, support-file registration, Cypress compatibility, and the package’s own output directory.
Visual-regression baseline
A local plugin or hosted visual-testing service may store an image or DOM capture as the expected baseline. Cypress lists both local plugins and hosted integrations, including Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy (BrowserStack), Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, Wopee.io, and @simonsmith/cypress-image-snapshot. These tools have different capture, approval, and update commands.

Cypress screenshot
cy.screenshot() writes an image, normally a PNG, under the configured screenshotsFolder (default: cypress/screenshots). Cypress also captures a failure screenshot during cypress run unless screenshotOnRunFailure is disabled. This image is not automatically a visual-regression baseline.
1. Confirm Cypress discovered and ran the spec
A missing artifact cannot be produced by a test file Cypress never loaded. The documented default end-to-end pattern is cypress/e2e/**/*.cy.{js,jsx,ts,tsx}, but your configuration may override it.
- Open
cypress.config.jsorcypress.config.tsand inspect thee2eorcomponentsection. - Check
specPatternfor the file’s actual extension and directory. Also checkexcludeSpecPattern, which can silently omit a matching file. - Verify the relevant
supportFile. A snapshot command registered in the wrong support file will not exist in the running project. - Run the spec from the Cypress Launchpad or with the CLI and confirm that the test appears in the runner output. A skipped, filtered, or never-invoked test will not create a snapshot.
When discovery is unclear, enable Cypress’s documented file-discovery diagnostics before the command:

Correct the path or pattern, rerun the test, and only then investigate the artifact location.

2. Confirm the command that should create the file
For a Cypress screenshot
Look for cy.screenshot() in the test or a helper it calls. A failure image is automatic only in the run mode and only when screenshotOnRunFailure remains enabled. Interactive runs do not necessarily produce the same failure artifact workflow.
Inspect configuration and the effective project directory:

})Then search the configured folder, not only the repository root. Cypress uses a spec- and test-related directory and filename convention. A repeated name can receive a numeric suffix; an overwrite option, when used, changes that behavior. Check the terminal output for the exact saved path and confirm that your CI job preserves the folder as an artifact.

For a saved-value snapshot
Find the command in the test source, for example a custom .snapshot() chain. Trace its import to the support file and package manifest. Record the package name and installed version, then follow that version’s documented setup and update command. The older Cypress snapshot article is historical guidance, not proof that the same command or path applies to your project.

For a visual baseline
Identify whether the tool writes local files or uploads captures to a hosted dashboard. A local baseline may be ignored by Git, written below a plugin-specific directory, or generated only after an explicit update mode. A hosted baseline will not appear in cypress/screenshots; inspect the service’s build or review page instead. Confirm browser, viewport, and project identifiers because changing any of them can select a different baseline.
3. Stabilize the page before capturing
Cypress documentation states: “Snapshot commands capture whatever is on screen at that moment.” A capture made while the page is rendering, animating, or waiting for data can be empty or inconsistent even when the file is written correctly.
Wait for a meaningful application state
Prefer a functional assertion over an arbitrary delay:

cy.screenshot('account-ready')Use cy.wait() for a known request, then assert the element that proves the UI is ready. If a third-party request cannot be controlled, wait for a stable selector or use the visual tool’s supported selector, delay, or network-idle option.
Control variable data
- Stub changing API responses with
cy.intercept()fixtures. - Use deterministic dates, IDs, feature flags, and user data.
- Disable or mask clocks, carousels, advertisements, rotating testimonials, and live counters where the selected visual tool supports it.
- Prefer a narrow mask or hidden selector to a broad difference threshold that could conceal a real defect.
Check viewport and browser assumptions
A baseline captured at one viewport or browser is not interchangeable with another. Reproduce the original dimensions, device scale, browser, locale, timezone, and color scheme before declaring the file missing.

4. Review a mismatch before updating a baseline
“How do I update a Cypress snapshot?” has a conditional answer: update only after reviewing the actual and expected output. A mismatch may be an intended UI change, a regression, or uncontrolled data.

- Check the test log for the resolved path, browser, viewport, and request failures.
- Fix application or test nondeterminism first.
- Use the update procedure documented by the installed plugin or hosted service. Do not copy an update flag from a different visual-testing package.
- Commit the new local baseline, or approve the hosted change through that service’s review workflow.

Choosing a visual-testing path after diagnosis
You do not need a visual service to locate a missing Cypress screenshot. If you do need one, compare the options on these axes:
- Local files versus hosted baseline storage.
- Local rendering versus hosted or cross-browser rendering.
- Browser and viewport coverage.
- Image capture versus DOM-based comparison.
- Reviewer approval and rejection workflow.
- Compatibility and current maintenance for your Cypress version.
- Commercial terms verified on the vendor’s current official site.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Cypress snapshot missing even though the test passes?
A passing assertion does not prove a snapshot command ran. Confirm the spec was discovered, the command is reached, and the artifact type and output path match your expectation.
Is a Cypress screenshot the same as a visual baseline?
No. A screenshot from cy.screenshot() is an image artifact; a visual baseline belongs to the selected comparison plugin or hosted service and may be stored elsewhere.
Can I fix a missing snapshot by increasing the diff threshold?
No. Thresholds affect comparison tolerance, not file creation. First fix discovery, command registration, output paths, and page stability.
