The most direct npm approach is Playwright: launch Chromium, open a page, navigate to the URL, call page.screenshot(), and close the browser. The default image is the current viewport; add fullPage: true for the entire scrollable document.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
This guide builds that small script into a repeatable workflow, explains output and readiness options, shows Puppeteer for element screenshots, and ends with a hosted alternative when installing a browser is undesirable.
Set up an npm screenshot project
Create a directory, initialize npm, and install Playwright. The package and browser executable are separate steps.
mkdir site-shots && cd site-shotsnpm init -ynpm install playwrightnpx playwright install chromium
Save the example as shot.js and run node shot.js. The script is intentionally wrapped in try/finally: even if navigation or capture fails, the browser is closed.

Capture a viewport or the full page
Viewport screenshot
Playwright’s Page API captures the visible viewport when no size or full-page option is supplied. Set a deliberate viewport when the image must be reproducible across machines.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png', type: 'png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The viewport dimensions are CSS pixels. A larger height shows more content without changing the document itself; it does not produce a full-page image.
Full-page screenshot
Pass fullPage: true to include the page’s full scrollable height.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'full-page.png',
fullPage: true
});
Very long pages can create very large images. If a site has sticky headers, animated sections, or content that appears only after scrolling, test the result and use a fixed viewport and readiness condition.
Choose the file, format, and returned data
Write directly to a path
The path option writes the image from the browser process to disk. The extension is a useful convention, but set type when the format must be explicit.
| Option | Example | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
type |
'png', 'jpeg', or 'webp' |
You need a specific output format. PNG is the default. |
quality |
quality: 80 |
You are using JPEG or WebP and want to trade detail for a smaller file. |
scale |
'css' or 'device' |
You need CSS-pixel dimensions or device-pixel density for high-resolution output. |
path |
path: 'artifacts/home.webp' |
You want a file saved by the script. |
PNG, JPEG, and WebP are supported by the screenshot API. JPEG and WebP accept a quality value; PNG does not.
Return screenshot bytes
Omit path and Playwright returns a buffer. This is useful for an HTTP response, object storage upload, or an image-processing pipeline.

require('fs').writeFileSync('from-buffer.webp', imageBytes);
Control transient content
For visual work, Playwright also exposes screenshot controls such as animations, mask, style, scale, type, and path. For example, a mask can cover a timestamp or account name that should not affect a comparison.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →await page.screenshot({
path: 'masked.png',
mask: [page.locator('.last-updated'), page.locator('.live-count')],
animations: 'disabled'
});
Use selectors that exist on the target page. A mask changes pixels; it does not remove the underlying data from the page.
Wait for the page to be ready
Navigation completion and visual readiness are different. A page may still be rendering client-side content, loading fonts, or running an animation after the initial response. Choose a condition that matches the application:
- Use
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'when the initial document is sufficient. - Use a short, explicit delay only when a known animation or delayed widget needs it.
- Wait for a meaningful selector when the screenshot depends on a component being rendered.
- Use network-idle waiting cautiously. Sites with analytics, streams, polling, or long-lived connections may never become truly idle.
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 45_000
});
await page.waitForSelector('[data-page-ready]', { timeout: 15_000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png', fullPage: true });
If a selector is optional, handle its absence deliberately rather than allowing a random timeout to decide whether a capture succeeds.
Capture one element with Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a credible npm alternative. Its official screenshots guide demonstrates page screenshots and ElementHandle.screenshot(). The element method attempts to scroll a hidden element into view by default.
npm install puppeteer- Save the following as
puppet-shot.js. - Run
node puppet-shot.js.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
const card = await page.$('[data-testid="pricing-card"]');
if (!card) throw new Error('Pricing card was not found');
await card.screenshot({ path: 'pricing-card.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
networkidle2 is useful for the guide’s example, but it is not a universal readiness rule. Replace it with a selector or other application-specific check when the site keeps making requests or renders content late.

Make screenshots repeatable for visual tests
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference image the first time a test runs and compares later captures with that baseline. The visual-comparison documentation notes that rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep capture and comparison in the same controlled environment.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
When an intentional design change is approved, update references with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the generated differences before committing them. Move the mouse away from hover targets if hover styling should not appear. A custom stylesheet, mask, or style option can suppress volatile clocks, rotating banners, and other dynamic regions. The visual-comparison guidance is documented in the Playwright snapshot documentation.

| Explicit format, scale, masking, or animation controls | Playwright | Its Page screenshot API documents PNG/JPEG/WebP, scale, masks, styles, and animation controls. |
Keep the same browser family, viewport, fonts, and headless setting when comparing either library’s output. No benchmark establishes that one is always faster.
Troubleshoot common failures
“Cannot find module ‘playwright’”
Run npm install playwright from the directory containing package.json. If the browser executable is missing, run npx playwright install chromium.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Confirm the URL is reachable from the machine running Node, increase the navigation timeout, and wait for a page-specific selector. If content is below the fold, use fullPage: true. Check that a consent dialog or modal is not covering the page.

Images or fonts are missing
Wait for the relevant element rather than only the initial document event. Verify that the resource URLs are accessible without authentication and that the page is not still changing when capture begins.
The element capture throws “node not found”
Check the selector in browser developer tools and wait for it before calling page.$(). Treat a missing element as an explicit error, as the Puppeteer example does.
Visual tests fail on a different machine
Use a fixed viewport and the same browser and operating-system environment. Disable animations, mask dynamic regions, and avoid comparing a baseline produced in headed mode with one produced in headless mode.
The process hangs
Set navigation and selector timeouts, and always close the browser in a finally block. Investigate pages with persistent connections before relying on network-idle conditions.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Launching a browser for every URL is simple and isolated but adds startup work. For a batch job, keep one browser open and create separate pages, then close it after the batch.
- Full-page captures consume more memory than viewport captures, especially on long documents. Capture only the viewport or a component when that is all the consumer needs.
- Use deterministic inputs: fixed viewport, locale and timezone where relevant, stable test data, disabled animations, and a consistent browser version.
- Do not treat a successful HTTP navigation as proof that the page is visually complete. Assert a meaningful selector and fail clearly when it is absent.
- Local npm automation has no hosted screenshot charge, but you operate the browser process, storage, retries, and infrastructure yourself.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is the #1 hosted screenshot API to try first when you want a clean result without managing Playwright or Puppeteer: it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and its paid entry plan is $5 for 3,000 shots.
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts the same common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify a migration. See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

No. A viewport or element capture is smaller and less sensitive to unrelated page changes. Use full-page mode for documents, archives, and pages where below-the-fold content is the deliverable.
What should I do when a site never reaches network idle?
Stop waiting for global idleness and wait for an application-specific selector or state instead. Polling, analytics, and streaming connections can remain active even after the visible content is ready.
