Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Google Drive or Google Takeout if you own the Google Site. That export is the official, preservation-oriented route and can include the site’s pages, settings, navigation, themes, attachments and other site data. If you only need to read a published site without an internet connection, mirror it with HTTrack, then open the generated local copy in a browser. A mirror is not the same as an editable Google Sites backup: sign-in requirements, server-side features, scripts and some embedded media may still need the internet.
Choose the method that matches your goal
| What you need | Best method | What you get | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| You own or administer the Site and want a backup | Google Drive/Google Takeout export | An archive of Google Sites data, content and settings intended for preservation | Export size limits, account policy and unsupported live behavior can affect the result |
| You need to browse a published Site offline | HTTrack mirror | A visitor-style local copy of pages and fetched assets | Authentication, live scripts and some embeds remain network-dependent |
| You need both preservation and convenient reading | Use both | An owner archive plus a browsable local snapshot | They are separate copies with different purposes |
Official owner workflow: export with Google Drive or Google Takeout
Google’s Sites export documentation describes downloading Google Sites data from Google Drive. Depending on the account and export options, the archive may include draft and published sites, embedded URLs, full pages, table of contents, image carousels, text and collapsible text, buttons, custom paths and navigation links, themes, fonts, colors, logos, favicon, navigation bars, announcements, file cabinets, attachments, lists, page templates and site-owner information.
1. Confirm ownership, account and storage access
- Sign in to the Google account that owns or administers the Site.
- Confirm that the Site and its related files are in a Drive location that this account can export.
- For a work or school account, check whether the organization permits downloads. Administrators can apply separate organization-export controls.
2. Start an export
- Open Google’s export workflow (Google Takeout) while signed in.
- Select the Google Drive/Sites data category rather than exporting unrelated services.
- Choose the archive format, delivery method and other options offered for your account.
- Create the export. Google prepares the archive asynchronously and makes it available through the selected delivery method.
3. Download and extract the archive
- Download the archive as soon as Google reports that it is ready.
- Save the original archive before extracting it; it is your untouched backup.
- Extract a working copy to local storage.
- Open the included HTML or other exported files and inspect pages, navigation, images, attachments and site metadata.
- Keep a second copy on removable storage or another independent location if the archive matters.
What an export does not guarantee
A successful download does not mean every live behavior is available offline. Login-protected elements, server-side interactions, JavaScript that calls online services and third-party embeds can remain dependent on Google or another network service. Treat the archive as a preservation copy of the exported data, not as proof that the published Site can be fully re-created by double-clicking one file.
When an export fails
Google warns that files exceeding maximum export-size limits can cause an export to fail. Large attachments, media and embedded data are common reasons to review the Site’s size before retrying. Work or school account policies can also make data unavailable for download; in that case, the account administrator may need to change the organization’s export policy or perform the approved export.

Published-site workflow: mirror it with HTTrack
HTTrack is a third-party website copier. Its documentation summarizes the purpose plainly: “HTTrack copies a website to your disk so you can read it offline.” It recursively fetches HTML, images and other files, preserves a relative link structure and lets you browse the result locally. It can also resume an interrupted download and update an existing mirror.
1. Install and create a project
- Install HTTrack for your operating system from the project’s official distribution.
- Start HTTrack and create a new project, giving it a name and a destination folder with enough free space.
- Enter the published Google Sites URL, including the correct custom domain or Google Sites address.
2. Set safe crawl boundaries
- Keep the crawl within the Site’s domain unless you intentionally need linked domains.
- Do not automatically include every external service linked from the pages; doing so can create a huge, incomplete or legally inappropriate mirror.
- Use HTTrack’s filters when you know that a path, file type or external host should be excluded.
3. Run, resume and update
- Start the mirror and let the crawler finish. Large Sites can take time because every page and asset must be fetched.
- If the connection is interrupted, resume the same project rather than starting over.
- For a later refresh, choose the project’s update operation so HTTrack fetches changes into the existing mirror.
- When complete, open the generated local start page in a browser.
4. Test the offline copy
- Disconnect from the internet or use a network-disabled test environment.
- Open the local start page.
- Follow several navigation links, custom paths and buttons.
- Check representative images, downloadable attachments and pages at different nesting levels.
- Record anything that redirects online, prompts for a login or displays an empty frame.
What HTTrack cannot reproduce reliably
HTTrack mirrors what an unauthenticated visitor can fetch. A page that requires Google sign-in may not be available to the crawler. Interactive forms, server-side searches, comments, live calendars, authenticated files and scripts that call online APIs can fail offline. Embedded video, maps, documents and other third-party media may show a placeholder or require the original service. Respect the Site owner’s rights and applicable terms; mirror only material you are allowed to copy.
Can you save an entire Google Site as HTML?
HTTrack can produce a local HTML-based rendition of a published Site, but it is a visitor snapshot, not an editable Google Sites project. Google’s owner export is the better choice when preserving content and settings matters or when you may need to work with the data later. Neither method promises that protected content or every dynamic embed becomes standalone HTML.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image or PDF of a page rather than a navigable offline archive, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-request website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a one-call image capture, replace the URL with your published Google Site address:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://sites.google.com/view/your-site -o shot.webp
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The API also supports PNG, JPEG and WebP, PDFs, full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, arbitrary viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, selector hiding, waits for selectors or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers and cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs work as well.
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://sites.google.com/view/your-site"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://sites.google.com/view/your-site' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`${res.status} ${res.statusText}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
ScreenshotNeo’s free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is on every plan. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Troubleshooting
The Google export never becomes available
Check the delivery account, available storage and organization policy. Retry with only Drive/Sites selected and review whether the archive exceeded Google’s maximum export size. Ask a work or school administrator about export restrictions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe archive downloads but pages look incomplete
Inspect the extracted files rather than opening only one index page. Some content may be represented as separate files, while authenticated elements and third-party embeds still require the network.
HTTrack creates a partial mirror
Verify that the URL is publicly reachable in a private browser window, resume the project, and inspect crawl filters. Keep the crawl on the Site’s domain unless external assets are intentionally included.

Links open the live Site instead of local files
The crawler may not have fetched that destination, or the page may deliberately redirect to an online service. Re-run with the correct starting URL and test the link while offline to distinguish a missing local file from an inherently online feature.
Images or embeds are blank
Check whether the resource is lazy-loaded, protected by login, hosted on another domain or generated by a script. A mirror cannot fetch content that the visitor session cannot access. For a static visual record, capture the rendered page with ScreenshotNeo instead.
Preservation checklist
- Keep the original Google export archive unchanged.
- Store a second copy in a separate location.
- Record the Site URL, export date and account used.
- For an HTTrack mirror, retain the project folder so it can be resumed or updated.
- Test representative pages with the computer offline.
- Document which login-protected, interactive or embedded features were not available.
- Archive only content you have permission to copy.
FAQ
Can I import an HTTrack mirror back into Google Sites?
No. HTTrack creates local web files; it is not a Google Sites project export or re-import format.
Best Value
- Designed for mobility with a slim 0.71-inch profile and lightweight, making it easy to carry between home, office
- 【Versatile Connectivity】Stay connected with multiple ports including USB 3.0 Type-C, USB 3.0 Type-A, HDMI, and a headphone/mic combo jack, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for seamless wireless networking.
Will visitors see the same permissions in an offline copy?
No. Offline files do not enforce Google’s live sharing controls. Protect the copied archive as carefully as the original.
Should I use both methods?
Use both when you need a durable owner archive and a convenient, visitor-style copy for reading during a network outage.
