Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Chrome DevTools each offer ways to capture a webpage, but the steps and available options differ.
Choose the right kind of browser capture
Before taking a screenshot, decide what the recipient needs to see. An ordinary screen capture records the visible area; it does not automatically scroll down a long page. Use a browser feature that explicitly offers a full-page capture when the screenshot must include below-the-fold content.
- Visible viewport: Capture the browser content currently on screen. Firefox calls this “Save visible.”
- Selected region or element: Capture a particular area or page component without the rest of the page. This is useful for a chart, message, or interface control.
- Full webpage: Capture the page beyond the current viewport in one image. Choose a full-page option rather than relying on your computer’s ordinary screenshot shortcut.
- Live tab or screen sharing: Share a live stream of a selected browser tab, window, or screen. This is different from saving a still screenshot; check the selected surface for private information before sharing.
How to take a screenshot in Firefox
Firefox has a page-level screenshot flow for common captures and separate Developer Tools options for more technical work. Mozilla’s help article was marked updated three weeks before the documentation was accessed for this guide; menu names and placement can shift between releases. See Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot instructions for the current help page.
Capture a visible area, selected region, element, or full page
- Open the page and right-click an empty part of it. Choose Take Screenshot. Alternatively, use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose the capture option you need. You can drag to select a region, choose an automatically highlighted page component, select Save full page, or select Save visible.
- Download the image to the browser’s default download folder or copy it to the clipboard, depending on the available action.
If you need a whole long page, choose Save full page; selecting a region or Save visible produces a different result.

Use Firefox Developer Tools for a node or developer workflow
- Enable a full-page button: Open Developer Tools, go to Settings, and enable the screenshot button under Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Capture a specific DOM element: In the Inspector’s HTML pane, open the element’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.
- Use the Web Console: Firefox’s
:screenshothelper supports options for full-page output, selecting an element, delaying the capture, choosing a filename, and setting device pixel ratio. Use this route when you need those developer-oriented controls rather than the simpler page menu.
How to capture a webpage in Microsoft Edge
Edge’s Screenshot feature can capture a selected area or content beyond the current viewport. Microsoft says it can also capture moving content such as GIFs or carousels. Availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version, so the same controls may not appear for everyone. See Microsoft’s Edge Screenshot feature page.
- Open the webpage and choose Screenshot from the right-click menu or Edge Settings, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose a full-page or selected-area capture.
- If useful, add markup, then copy or save the image.
Use the full-page choice when content below the visible browser area matters. Use selected area for a focused excerpt. If Screenshot is missing, feature availability may differ for your device, market, or installed browser version.
How to capture a browser screen in Google Chrome
Chrome’s documented screenshot workflows are in DevTools. The Command Menu offers a selected-area capture, and DevTools also documents full-page and element-oriented methods. See Google Chrome DevTools’ screenshot documentation.
Capture a selected area
- Open Chrome DevTools. You can right-click the page and choose Inspect, or use the browser’s DevTools shortcut.
- Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type
screenshotand choose Capture area screenshot. - Drag across the page to select the area to capture.
Google notes that area capture will not work if DevTools is undocked from the browser window. Dock DevTools to the browser window and retry if the command does not capture the selection.

Use another DevTools screenshot method
Chrome’s DevTools screenshot guidance also covers full-page capture, screenshots of a node in the Elements panel, capturing a node larger than the screen, and emulating a mobile version with a device frame. Use the method that matches the output: a selected area for a crop, a node for a particular page element, or a full-page command for a long document. These are developer-tool workflows, not the same as an ordinary operating-system screenshot.
How do I screenshot an entire webpage?
Use the browser’s explicit full-page option. In Firefox, choose Save full page in the page screenshot flow. In Edge, choose its full-page Screenshot option. In Chrome, use the full-page screenshot method documented for DevTools rather than the selected-area command. The exact interface can vary by browser version.
Full-page captures can differ from a visible screenshot because they include portions of the document that were not on screen. If the page contains changing content, such as a carousel, the image may reflect the state at capture time; Microsoft specifically notes that Edge’s tool can capture moving content such as GIFs or carousels.
How do I take a screenshot of what’s on my screen?
If you mean the browser content currently visible, choose a visible-page option such as Firefox’s Save visible, or use your operating system’s screen-capture feature. If you mean a complete long webpage, use a browser full-page capture instead. A standard screen capture is not a substitute for a full-page webpage screenshot.

How do I share my browser tab?
Use a screen-sharing feature when another person needs to see a live tab or screen, rather than a saved image. The Screen Capture API prompts the user to choose a surface and can expose content beyond the intended tab, depending on the selected surface. Review the selection for private information before confirming. See MDN’s Screen Capture API reference.
Or skip the browser setup
For automated screenshots in an app or workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One GET request with a URL returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting browser screenshots
The capture excludes content below the fold
You likely captured the visible viewport or a selected area rather than the full document. Repeat the capture and choose the browser’s full-page option. In Firefox, that option is Save full page; in Edge, choose full-page capture; in Chrome, use the DevTools full-page method.

Chrome’s area screenshot does not work
Google says area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked from the browser window. Dock DevTools, reopen the Command Menu with the operating-system-appropriate shortcut, and run Capture area screenshot again.
The screenshot option is missing
Browser features and menus can change across versions. In Edge, Microsoft specifically warns that availability and functionality vary by device, market, and browser version. Check the browser’s current help page and menus; for Firefox full-page developer captures, the button may need to be enabled in Developer Tools Settings under Available Toolbox Buttons.
The result shows too much or too little
Match the capture method to the target: use a drag selection for an arbitrary region, an element or node option for a page component, a visible-page choice for what is currently shown, or full-page capture for the whole document. Firefox offers region and automatically highlighted element selection in its page flow, while Chrome DevTools documents area and node techniques.
You are about to share information unintentionally
Pause before confirming a live screen or tab share. Verify which surface is selected and check that it does not expose other tabs, windows, or private content. A saved still screenshot and a live stream have different privacy consequences.

Choosing among the browser workflows
| Browser and route | Visible capture | Region or element | Full page | Workflow |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox page menu | Yes: Save visible | Region or automatically highlighted component | Yes: Save full page | Right-click Take Screenshot or browser shortcut; can download or copy |
| Firefox Developer Tools | Not specified for these developer controls | Inspector Screenshot Node | Yes: screenshot button or :screenshot helper |
Developer-oriented; helper includes delay, filename, and device-pixel-ratio options |
| Microsoft Edge Screenshot | Not separately specified | Selected area | Yes | Right-click, Settings, or shortcut; supports markup and copy or save; availability varies |
| Chrome DevTools | Not separately specified | Area or node | Yes | Developer-oriented; area capture requires DevTools docked to the browser window |
For a quick capture, the browser page menu is the simplest route where available. For a particular DOM element or a developer-controlled capture, use the relevant DevTools workflow. For a live presentation, choose screen sharing rather than a screenshot.
