There is no universal screenshot format. The file you get depends on the device, capture tool, image settings and destination. iPhone screenshots are PNG in SDR mode and HEIF in HDR mode. Android’s documented HDR screenshot pipeline still writes PNG for compatibility. Other capture APIs may offer PNG, JPEG or HEIC. For most screenshots containing text, icons and sharp interface edges, PNG is the safest default; JPEG is useful when a workflow requires it or a smaller file is more important than lossless detail.
JPG and JPEG mean the same image format
JPG and JPEG are filename extensions for the same JPEG image format. The three- and four-letter spellings do not describe different compression systems. JPEG uses lossy compression: when an image is saved as JPEG, some information is discarded. Repeatedly opening and saving a JPEG can introduce additional artifacts around text, thin lines and interface edges.
PNG uses lossless compression. A PNG decoder can reconstruct the stored image data without the quality loss associated with JPEG encoding. Lossless does not mean “always smallest”: dimensions, colors, transparency, image content and encoder settings all affect the resulting file size.
Why screenshots are commonly PNG
A screenshot is usually made of flat colors, text, icons, borders and precise one-pixel boundaries rather than continuous photographic detail. Lossy block artifacts that are barely visible in a photograph can make small text or diagonal UI edges look soft. Apple’s image guidance recommends PNG for bitmap images used in interfaces, while recommending JPEG or HEIC for photographs.

PNG is a practical recommendation, not a guarantee that every screenshot will be smaller or that every application defaults to it. A very large, photographic webpage may produce a smaller JPEG at an acceptable quality setting.
What each major platform documents
iPhone: PNG for SDR, HEIF for HDR
Apple Support documents PNG for standard-dynamic-range (SDR) iPhone screenshots and HEIF for high-dynamic-range (HDR) screenshots. HDR can retain a wider range of brightness and color. An HDR display is needed to see its full effect; on a standard display, the image is shown in SDR.
On an iPhone, check the screen-capture setting when the format matters: Settings > General > Screen Capture. The available SDR and HDR choices affect subsequent captures. Do not infer the format solely from the fact that the image came from an iPhone.
Apple capture APIs: PNG, JPEG or HEIC may be selected
Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit screenshot configuration exposes HEIC, JPEG and PNG as content-type choices. That is an API capability, not evidence that every Mac utility or default capture shortcut uses one fixed format. A developer or tool can choose the format appropriate to its pipeline.
Android HDR screenshots: still PNG in the documented pipeline
The Android Open Source Project describes an HDR screenshot flow that stores an SDR base rendition and a gainmap in a PNG file. The stated reason is backward compatibility with systems that already ingest PNG screenshots. This detail applies to that documented HDR pipeline; it should not be generalized to every Android vendor build or third-party capture application.
Windows: verify the specific capture tool
There is no single current Windows default established here across Snipping Tool, Game Bar and other capture methods. Check the extension of the file produced by the particular tool and Windows version you use, or inspect its export settings before designing an automated workflow.

Choose based on the actual image and destination rather than a blanket “PNG is always better” rule. Dimensions, encoder implementation, JPEG quality, color depth and the amount of photographic content can change the result. When JPEG is the right choice
A service explicitly requires JPG or JPEG
Some upload forms, document systems and APIs accept only JPEG. Export a copy in the required format rather than renaming .png to .jpg; changing the extension does not convert the underlying bytes.

The screenshot is mostly photographic
A capture of a photo editor, video frame or image-heavy page can benefit from JPEG’s compression. Select a quality level that keeps text and important details readable, then inspect the exported file at its actual display size.
Storage or transfer limits dominate
If a workflow has strict attachment or bandwidth limits, JPEG may meet the limit more easily. Compare the resulting files on representative captures instead of assuming one format always wins.
When PNG is the right choice
- Documentation, software tutorials and bug reports where text must remain legible.
- UI mockups, dashboards, terminal output, charts and pixel-precise diagrams.
- Images that need transparent regions or later compositing.
- Source files that will be edited repeatedly before a final delivery format is chosen.
If the final destination accepts both formats, keep the original PNG as an archival or editing copy and create a JPEG derivative only when its size or compatibility benefit is real.
HDR screenshots change the format question
HDR is not simply “a better PNG” or “a better JPEG.” It describes brightness and color information that the capture and display pipeline must preserve. Apple’s iPhone documentation distinguishes SDR PNG captures from HDR HEIF captures and notes that full HDR quality requires an HDR display. Android’s documented HDR screenshot design stores the needed information in PNG for compatibility. Therefore, decide first whether HDR matters to the use case and whether the recipient can view it; then select an export format that your application and destination support.

The receiving service can override your preference. Apple’s App Store Connect screenshot specifications accept .jpeg, .jpg and .png, but prohibit alpha channels or transparency in submitted screenshots. A PNG with transparent pixels may therefore need an opaque background before upload, even though PNG itself supports transparency.
- Read the destination’s current file-type, dimension, color and transparency rules.
- Capture or retain a lossless source while you are still editing.
- Export a delivery copy in the accepted extension and color mode.
- Open the exported file and inspect small text, gradients, transparency and HDR appearance.
- Upload a test image if the service offers validation, then keep the source and delivery copy clearly named.
How to convert a screenshot without damaging it
Use an image editor or operating-system export
Open the original, choose Export or Save As, select PNG or JPEG, and set the JPEG quality if offered. Do not use a file-renaming operation as a conversion. Preserve the original dimensions unless the destination requires resizing, because enlarging a compressed screenshot cannot restore discarded detail.

Automate conversion in a script
For automated pipelines, decode the source image, flatten transparency only when the destination requires it, then encode the target format with an explicit quality or compression setting. Test with captures containing small text, solid UI colors and gradients. A conversion is not “identical” when the target is JPEG: lossy encoding can change pixels even if the image looks acceptable at normal size.
Capturing screenshots for websites and automation
Browser automation adds another format decision: the capture service may return PNG, JPEG, WebP or a PDF. Set the output explicitly when downstream software depends on an extension, and verify the response headers and bytes rather than trusting a renamed filename. Full-page captures, device scale, lazy-loaded images, cookie banners and overlays can affect the content independently of the image format.

Troubleshooting format problems
The file has the wrong extension
Inspect the file’s actual type with your operating system or image editor. Rename only after conversion if a receiving system requires a particular spelling. If a server rejects the upload, export again in the accepted format.
Text looks blurry after conversion
The source may have been encoded as JPEG at low quality or resized during export. Return to the original PNG, export at the original dimensions and increase JPEG quality—or deliver PNG if allowed.
Transparency disappeared
JPEG cannot carry an alpha channel, and some destinations reject transparency even in PNG. Flatten the image onto the required background color before exporting, then check the edges for halos.

HDR looks dull on another screen
The recipient may be viewing an HDR capture on an SDR display or in software that does not interpret its HDR metadata. Provide an SDR-compatible derivative when consistent appearance matters, while retaining the HDR source if it is needed.
A browser capture contains banners or fails
