For Firefox on Windows or Linux and Microsoft Edge, Ctrl+Shift+S opens a browser screenshot tool; Firefox uses Command+Shift+S on Mac. In Chrome, Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on Mac, opens DevTools’ Command Menu—not a direct screenshot command. Windows’ Windows+Shift+S captures a selected screen region, while Windows+PrtScn saves a full-screen image. The operating-system shortcuts capture what is on screen, not necessarily the entire webpage below the fold.
Which shortcut should you use?
Choose based on what you need in the image. Browser screenshot tools may capture content beyond the visible window; operating-system shortcuts capture the screen or a selected portion of it. The Chrome shortcut opens a developer menu in which you then choose a capture command.
| Browser or system | Shortcut | What it does | Output or setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox, Windows/Linux | Ctrl+Shift+S | Opens Firefox’s screenshot interface. Choose visible content, a selection, or the full page. | Download or copy to clipboard. |
| Firefox, Mac | Command+Shift+S | Opens Firefox’s screenshot interface, including the full-page option. | Download or copy to clipboard. |
| Microsoft Edge | Ctrl+Shift+S | Opens Screenshot, which can capture a selected area or full webpage. | Mark up, copy, or save; availability can vary by device, market, and browser version. |
| Chrome, Windows/Linux | Ctrl+Shift+P | Opens the DevTools Command Menu. Type “screenshot” and select a capture command. | Requires a further menu choice; area capture does not work if DevTools is undocked. |
| Chrome, Mac | Command+Shift+P | Opens the DevTools Command Menu. Type “screenshot” and select a capture command. | Requires a further menu choice; area capture does not work if DevTools is undocked. |
| Windows | Windows+Shift+S | Selects a region of the screen. | Copies the capture to the clipboard. |
| Windows | Windows+PrtScn | Captures the full screen. | Saves an image in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures. |
These shortcuts are not interchangeable. If you need a whole webpage, use a browser workflow that explicitly offers full-page capture. A system shortcut that photographs the whole screen still captures only the screen area, not the rest of a long document.
Capture a webpage in Firefox
Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool can capture the visible view or the full webpage, as well as a selected region or a page part highlighted by the browser. Mozilla documents Ctrl+Shift+S for Windows and Linux and Command+Shift+S for Mac. You can also right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. See Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot instructions.

- Open the webpage and press the shortcut for your operating system, or right-click an empty page area and choose Take Screenshot.
- Choose Save full page to capture the document beyond the current viewport, or Save visible to capture only what is currently shown.
- For a partial capture, select the region or page part you want.
- Download the result or copy it to the clipboard. A download goes to Firefox’s default download location.
Firefox also has developer-oriented capture methods, but they are separate from the standard shortcut. Developer Tools can be configured with a screenshot toolbar button; the Inspector context menu offers Screenshot Node for a selected element; and the Web Console’s :screenshot helper accepts --fullpage. Use these when you need a specific element or a developer workflow rather than the ordinary screenshot interface. Mozilla describes these options in its Web Console helper command documentation.
Capture a webpage in Microsoft Edge
In Edge, press Ctrl+Shift+S to open Screenshot. You can also open it from the right-click menu or Edge’s settings menu. The feature supports capturing a full webpage or a selected area, then marking up, copying, or saving the result. Microsoft notes that availability and functionality may differ by device type, market, and browser version; if the shortcut does not open the tool, look for Screenshot in the browser menus. See Microsoft’s Edge screenshot instructions.
- Open the page and press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose a full-page capture or select the area you want, depending on the options shown in your version of Edge.
- Use the available markup tools if needed, then copy or save the capture.
Take a screenshot in Chrome with DevTools
Chrome’s documented shortcut is for opening DevTools’ Command Menu, not for taking a screenshot immediately. On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl+Shift+P; on Mac, press Command+Shift+P. Type screenshot in the menu, then choose Capture area screenshot to select an area. Google notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked from the browser window. The documented workflow is an area capture; do not assume this shortcut provides a full-page screenshot. See Google’s DevTools Command Menu documentation.

- Open Chrome DevTools. If it is undocked, dock it back into the browser window before trying an area capture.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+P on Mac.
- Type screenshot and choose Capture area screenshot.
- Select the area to capture and save the resulting image.
This is useful for an area capture when you are already working in DevTools. It is not the same as a one-step browser screenshot shortcut, and the documented command should not be treated as confirmation of a full-page capture option.
Use Windows’ built-in screen-capture shortcuts
Windows shortcuts can capture a region or the full screen without using the browser’s screenshot tool. They capture screen pixels, so a full-screen capture does not include webpage content that is below the current viewport. Microsoft lists these shortcuts in its Windows keyboard shortcuts reference.
Select a screen region
Press Windows+Shift+S, then select the region. Windows copies the capture to the clipboard; use Snipping Tool if you want to mark it up or share it. Paste it into an image editor, document, or message to use the copied image.

Save the full screen
Press Windows+PrtScn. Windows captures the full screen and saves the image in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures. This is a screen capture, not a full-page webpage capture.
When a full-page capture matters
A full-page browser capture and a screen capture answer different needs. Use a browser feature that explicitly offers Save full page or a full-webpage option when the page continues below the visible window. Use a system shortcut when you want exactly what is currently on screen, or a selected portion of that screen. In Chrome, the documented DevTools workflow above is for an area capture; do not infer full-page support from the Command Menu shortcut alone.
Recommended Free Tools
- Only need the visible page? Use the browser’s visible capture option or a system capture.
- Need content below the fold? Choose a browser workflow that explicitly supports full-page capture, such as Firefox’s Save full page or Edge’s full-webpage option when available.
- Need an element in Firefox? Consider the Inspector’s Screenshot Node developer workflow.
- Need an area in Chrome? Use the DevTools Command Menu and its area screenshot command with DevTools docked.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot in a script or application rather than from a keyboard, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie banners and consent dialogs, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of the page. Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

The shortcut opens a different tool—or nothing
Confirm the browser and operating system first: Firefox and Edge use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows, while Firefox uses Command+Shift+S on Mac. Chrome’s Ctrl+Shift+P or Command+Shift+P opens the DevTools Command Menu. If a browser shortcut does not open the expected interface, use the browser’s right-click or settings menu to find the feature; browser versions and availability can differ.
The capture stops at the visible screen
You likely used an operating-system screen capture or a browser option for visible content. Choose the browser’s explicitly named full-page or full-webpage option instead. A Windows full-screen capture does not scroll the page or add content below the viewport.

Chrome cannot capture the selected area
Google says DevTools area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. Dock DevTools into the browser window and retry the Command Menu workflow.
You cannot find Edge Screenshot
Microsoft says Screenshot availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version. Try opening it from the right-click or settings menu; if it is not offered, the feature may not be available in that environment.
You cannot find a Windows capture file
Windows+Shift+S copies the selected capture to the clipboard rather than saving it directly as a file. Paste it into an application or use Snipping Tool. Windows+PrtScn saves a full-screen capture in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures.
Safari and other platforms
A Safari keyboard shortcut for full-page webpage screenshots is not established here, so this guide does not assign one. Shortcuts and screenshot features can also vary across browser versions, devices, and keyboard layouts. Check the browser’s current menus rather than assuming that a Windows system shortcut or another browser’s key combination applies.
