To capture the part of a webpage currently visible in Safari, press Shift-Command-4, drag across the area you want, then release. For the Safari window, press Shift-Command-4, press and release Space, then click the window. These built-in macOS shortcuts capture what is on screen; they do not create a single image of an entire scrolling webpage.
Choose the right kind of capture
First decide whether you need an image of what is on screen, a saved webpage file, or an image of the whole scrolling page. These are different outputs, and Safari’s built-in screenshot shortcuts cover the first category.

Apple’s screenshot instructions cover capturing the screen, a window, or a selected portion: Take a screenshot on Mac. The Safari guide documents saving webpage files rather than a built-in full-page screenshot command: Save part or all of a webpage in Safari.
Capture the visible webpage area
- Open the page in Safari and scroll to the content you want. Close or move unrelated windows if they overlap the desired area.
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Drag around the webpage content and release to capture it. Press Escape before releasing if you want to cancel.
- To reposition the selection without changing its dimensions, hold Space while dragging.
- Click the floating thumbnail to open the screenshot for editing, or wait for it to save.
This method is usually the cleanest built-in choice when you want page content without Safari’s tabs, address bar, or unrelated desktop items. It captures only the visible screen area: to include content farther down the page, you must scroll and take additional captures, save the webpage itself, or use a full-page-capable tool.

Capture the Safari window or the whole display
Capture just the Safari window
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Press and release Space. The pointer becomes a camera.
- Move it over the Safari window and click.
Hold Option while clicking if you want to omit the window shadow. A window capture includes the Safari window rather than only the webpage’s content, so use a selected-area capture if you need a tighter crop.
Capture the entire display
Press Shift-Command-3. The resulting image includes everything visible on the display, which can expose other windows or desktop items. For a screenshot intended to show only a page, select the page area instead.
Open the Screenshot controls
Press Shift-Command-5, or open Screenshot from Applications > Utilities. The controls let you choose a capture mode and adjust options such as the save location, timer, floating thumbnail, and pointer visibility. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple documents choices for SDR (PNG) and HDR (HEIF) capture formats. Availability depends on the Mac and macOS version.
Get a full-page capture or save the webpage
Save a webpage as a file
In Safari, choose File > Save As, then choose a format. Web Archive saves page content, including graphics, so it can remain useful offline; links to destination pages work only while those destinations are available. Page Source saves HTML only. Neither format is a screenshot image, and some webpages may prevent items from being saved.

Make a full-page image
Apple’s cited screenshot instructions describe screen, window, and selected-area captures; they do not document a built-in Safari command that exports an entire scrolling webpage as one image. A third-party option listed in the Mac App Store, FullPage Screenshot for Safari, advertises full-page and visible-area capture with PNG and PDF export. That listing describes the extension’s stated features; it is not an Apple endorsement or a guarantee that it will work on every site. Check the listing for current compatibility, price, and privacy details before installing.

Find, edit, or copy the screenshot
By default, macOS saves screenshots to the Desktop with a name in the form “Screen Shot [date] at [time].” To change the destination, open the Screenshot controls with Shift-Command-5, select Options, and choose a save location. Click the floating thumbnail to edit, or drag the thumbnail to another location.
To save a capture to the clipboard rather than the Desktop, hold Control while using a screenshot shortcut. You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The screenshot is missing or saved somewhere unexpected
Look on the Desktop first. If it is not there, open Shift-Command-5 > Options and check the selected save location. If you used a Control-modified shortcut, the capture may be on the clipboard instead of in a file.
The capture includes tabs, windows, or desktop clutter
Use Shift-Command-4 and drag only around the webpage area. The window and display shortcuts intentionally capture more than page content.
The screenshot cuts off content lower on the page
The basic shortcuts capture the visible display region, not a complete scrolling page. Save the page as a Web Archive or Page Source if a webpage file meets your need, or use a full-page image tool if you specifically need a single image.
The full-page extension does not capture a particular site
Extension availability and behavior can vary by macOS, Safari version, and website. Confirm compatibility and current product details in the Mac App Store listing; do not assume every site permits a complete capture. For automated jobs, check whether the page requires a wait for dynamic content or handles consent and overlays in a way your capture tool supports.

For a one-off image of visible content, the built-in shortcut is quickest and needs no extension or account. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take a screenshot in Safari without including the address bar?
Yes. Press Shift-Command-4 and drag around the webpage area you want, leaving out Safari’s toolbar.
Does Shift-Command-3 capture only Safari?
No. It captures the entire display. Use Shift-Command-4 for a selected area or the window-capture sequence for Safari alone.
