Find the page you want—often index.html—open it in a browser, then choose Print and Save as PDF. The ZIP itself is not the page to print: its HTML may rely on nearby CSS, images, fonts, or scripts, and preserving the folder structure helps those files load.
Before you convert: extract the ZIP and find the right page
- Extract the ZIP using your operating system’s archive utility. Choose a new folder if possible so the extracted files are easy to locate.
- Keep the archive’s directory structure unchanged. If the HTML refers to files using relative paths, moving the HTML or its assets can break those references.
- Look for the intended entry page. It is often named
index.html, but an archive can contain several HTML files; check the filenames and folders to identify the page you need. - Open the HTML file from the extracted folder in a browser. Before printing, check that expected styling and images appear. If they do not, confirm that the other files were extracted and remain in their original relative locations.
Extracting first is a practical requirement of this workflow, not a special ZIP-import feature of the conversion tools below: they render HTML pages, and local linked files need to remain accessible to the page.
Convert one page with a browser
For a one-off conversion, use the browser’s print dialog. This renders the page for print rather than simply saving a copy of the screen, so the PDF can look different from the page on screen.
- Open the extracted HTML file in your browser.
- Open the browser’s Print command. In most desktop browsers, this is also available with Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux and Command+P on macOS.
- In the destination or printer list, choose Save as PDF or the equivalent PDF destination.
- Review the print preview. Set the paper size and orientation, then adjust margins, scale, or background graphics if the layout needs it. Browser labels and available controls vary.
- Save the PDF, then open it and inspect the pages before sharing or relying on it.
What to check in the preview and saved PDF
- Page size and orientation: A wide page may need landscape orientation, while a document designed for standard paper may fit portrait.
- Margins and clipping: If content is cut off at the edges or columns break awkwardly, try different margins or scale. Check long tables and wide images in particular.
- Backgrounds and colors: Some print workflows omit background colors or images unless background printing is enabled. Turn it on only if those backgrounds matter to the document.
- Headers and footers: Browser print dialogs may add page details. Disable headers and footers if they intrude on the content and the setting is available.
- Page breaks: Scroll through every page. A heading at the foot of a page, a blank page, or a split image may require changed print settings or print-specific CSS.
- Assets and dynamic content: Missing images or styles can mean the page could not find its local files. Content added by scripts may also be incomplete if it had not loaded before printing.
Automate conversion with Chrome Headless
For repeatable command-line work, Chrome Headless documents the --print-to-pdf option. Replace the paths below with the full path to your extracted HTML file and the destination PDF. The file URL must point to the HTML entry page, not to the ZIP archive.

Chrome’s command-line reference also documents --no-pdf-header-footer to suppress PDF headers and footers, plus timeout and virtual-time options that can help when a page needs time to render. For example:
chrome --headless --no-pdf-header-footer --print-to-pdf=/absolute/path/output.pdf file:///absolute/path/extracted/index.htmlFor pages whose scripts need time to run, consult Chrome’s documented timeout and virtual-time-budget options and set them for the page you are converting. A wait setting is not a guarantee that every script, image, or remote resource will finish successfully; inspect the output. Use Playwright when you need a scripted PDF workflow
Playwright’s page.pdf() method creates a PDF using print CSS by default. Its API also exposes paper format, margins, background printing, page ranges, and a setting to prefer the page’s CSS-defined page size. This is useful when conversion is part of a larger script and you want to control browser navigation and PDF options in one place.

Here is a minimal Node.js example for a local extracted file. Install Playwright and its browser using the project’s documented setup, save this as an ES module such as make-pdf.mjs, and pass the HTML file path as an argument:

}Change format and the margins for your document, or use the API’s other PDF options for page ranges and CSS page-size preference. printBackground: true requests background printing; it does not repair missing asset paths. The Playwright Page API documents the available options. Playwright and Chrome Headless use browser rendering, but their settings and execution paths are not a promise that every document will produce identical output.
Consider wkhtmltopdf for an existing command-line setup
wkhtmltopdf is another command-line converter that accepts HTML page objects and documents controls for JavaScript and page settings. Its local-file-access controls matter when the input is a local HTML file that loads nearby assets. Review the tool’s security implications and enable only the access needed for your files; do not broadly enable local-file access without a reason.

wkhtmltopdf /absolute/path/extracted/index.html output.pdfOptions and defaults can affect whether scripts run, how pages are laid out, and whether local files are accessible. Consult the wkhtmltopdf usage documentation for the relevant settings rather than assuming its output will match Chrome or Playwright.
Which method should you choose?

For a one-time job, browser printing is usually the least setup. For recurring jobs, choose a scripted option that fits the runtime you can maintain and test the resulting PDFs against representative pages.

The PDF is missing images, fonts, or styling
Confirm the ZIP was fully extracted and that the HTML file remains in the same relative position to its asset folders. Open the HTML locally and look for missing content before printing. For command-line tools, check whether the converter can access local assets; wkhtmltopdf documents controls for this. Avoid granting wider file access than needed.

The PDF is blank or only partly rendered
Open the extracted HTML in a browser first. If it is blank there, the problem may be the page or its dependencies rather than PDF output. If it appears correctly but the PDF does not, check the output path, browser or tool errors, and whether scripts or remote resources had enough time to load. Chrome documents timeout and virtual-time controls, but no wait setting guarantees that a site’s dynamic content will be ready.
Content is clipped, too small, or split across pages
Try a different paper size or orientation, adjust margins or scale, and inspect the preview. For automated output, use the converter’s page and margin settings. If you control the HTML, print CSS can tailor the page for paper; Playwright’s PDF method uses print CSS by default.
Colors, backgrounds, or headers look wrong
Check whether background graphics are enabled and whether headers and footers are being added. Chrome Headless documents --no-pdf-header-footer; in a browser dialog, look for similar print controls. Compare the PDF with the intended printed layout, not only the screen view.

The page relies on scripts or remote content
Wait for the needed content to appear before printing manually. In automation, configure an appropriate navigation or capture wait and inspect the finished PDF for missing sections. More waiting can help a slow page, but cannot fix blocked resources, broken scripts, or content that requires interaction.

Final check before sharing the PDF
- Open the saved PDF and scan every page, including the last one.
- Confirm the expected images, styles, and dynamic text are present.
- Check page breaks, margins, scaling, backgrounds, and any unwanted headers or footers.
- If the PDF will be distributed, verify that it contains the intended page and no unrelated files from the archive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert the ZIP without extracting it?
The workflows here render an HTML page; they do not convert a ZIP archive as a page. Extract the archive first and preserve its folder structure.
Will the PDF look exactly like the page on screen?
Not necessarily. PDF conversion uses print rendering, which can change backgrounds, page breaks, margins, and other layout details.
