If await browser.newPage() never resolves, do not assume navigation is the problem. First prove which awaited operation stalls, then verify that Chromium is alive and connected, inspect its stderr, and match the runtime to Puppeteer’s documented requirements. A hang can result from a crashed browser, an unhealthy connection, missing Linux libraries, sandbox restrictions, unwritable profile paths, browser-version mismatches, or platform-specific limits. There is no single fix that applies to every environment.
Start by isolating the exact await
Separate browser startup, page creation, navigation and cleanup in both logs and code. Browser.newPage() creates a page in the default browser context and returns a Promise<Page>. Navigation waits and test-framework timeouts are different operations, so a timeout reported by Jest or another runner does not prove that page creation is the cause.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
let browser;
try {
console.log('before launch');
browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
dumpio: true // forward Chromium stdout/stderr
});
console.log('after launch');
console.log('before newPage');
const page = await browser.newPage();
console.log('after newPage');
console.log('before goto');
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'});
console.log('after goto');
} catch (error) {
console.error('Puppeteer failure:', error);
} finally {
console.log('before close');
if (browser) await browser.close();
console.log('after close');
}
})();
Run this minimal program without application hooks, worker pools or concurrent jobs. If “after launch” never appears, investigate launch and the executable. If “after launch” appears but “after newPage” does not, inspect Chromium health, the connection and the environment. If page creation completes and the next message is missing, debug navigation instead.
Check whether Chromium is still healthy
Read process output and exit state
A reported Puppeteer failure described both newPage() and pages() hanging while the author observed Chromium crashes. That GitHub report is marked as needing feedback and not reproducible; use it as a clue, not proof of a universal cause. With dumpio: true, look for messages about a crash, a missing library, a sandbox, a profile directory or an early process exit. Also check the operating system’s process list and container logs while the script is stuck.

Check the connection before creating another page
In a service that runs for hours, a browser may have closed or become unusable after repeated work. A separate report describes an eventual unresolved newPage() after prolonged reuse, but does not establish a general root cause or fix. Record whether the browser connection has closed, stop assigning new work when it has, and restart the browser as a controlled experiment rather than endlessly retrying the same promise.
Capture the Puppeteer version, browser version, Node.js version, operating system or container image, launch options and executable path in the diagnostic log. Keep a smallest reproducer that creates one browser and one page; only then reintroduce concurrency and application integrations.
Match the runtime to Puppeteer’s environment checks
Linux shared libraries
Chrome can start incompletely or crash when required shared libraries are absent. On Linux, inspect the browser binary with the equivalent of:
ldd /path/to/chrome | grep not
Any unresolved library needs to be installed through the image or host package manager. Use Puppeteer’s current dependency list for the exact browser build; package names vary by distribution.
Sandbox configuration
Chrome may terminate with No usable sandbox! when the host cannot provide a usable sandbox. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance says: “Running without a sandbox is strongly discouraged. Consider configuring a sandbox instead.” Configure the kernel, user namespaces and container permissions so Chrome can run sandboxed. Treat --no-sandbox only as a narrowly understood diagnostic or for content you absolutely trust; it removes an important security boundary and is not a general fix.

Ubuntu AppArmor and user namespaces
On Ubuntu 23.10 and newer, an AppArmor restriction can affect Chrome for Testing user namespaces. Verify the actual Chrome binary, kernel policy and AppArmor profile on the host before applying a workaround. Copying a workaround from an older image can create a different security or compatibility problem.
Writable profile and cache locations
Chrome writes profile, configuration and cache data. Read-only containers commonly cause failures that surface during page creation. Point XDG configuration and cache variables, and Puppeteer’s user-data directory, to writable paths, or mount writable volumes owned by the browser user.
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
userDataDir: '/tmp/puppeteer-profile',
env: {
...process.env,
XDG_CONFIG_HOME: '/tmp/xdg-config',
XDG_CACHE_HOME: '/tmp/xdg-cache'
}
});
Create those directories with suitable ownership before launch. A writable temporary directory is useful for diagnosis; use a persistent, access-controlled location when you need a retained profile.

If your package manager blocks install scripts, Puppeteer’s browser download may never occur. Verify the executable before debugging page creation. The documented installation command is:

npx puppeteer browsers install
Alternatively, enable the package manager’s install script under its security policy. An absent browser more directly explains launch failures than an isolated newPage() hang, but confirming the executable removes that uncertainty.
Cloud Run CPU allocation
When a Cloud Run service starts Puppeteer after returning an HTTP response, CPU allocation behavior can leave browser work extremely slow. Keep CPU allocated for the period in which the browser runs, and confirm that your handler does not return before the capture work is complete. This advice applies only to that execution pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse lifecycle controls to narrow the fault
Compare a fresh browser and a fresh context
Puppeteer supports both launch() and connect(). A fresh browser is the cleanest comparison when failure appears after repeated use. For less expensive isolation, create a new browser context for each independent task. Cookies and local storage are not shared between contexts, and closing a context closes its pages.
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
try {
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'});
} finally {
await context.close();
}
browser.disconnect() disconnects Puppeteer while leaving the browser and its pages running. browser.close() shuts down the browser. Use the former only when another process owns the browser; use the latter for normal cleanup.
Change one variable at a time
Do not respond to an unresolved browser call by simply increasing a Jest timeout. A longer test timeout can prevent an early test failure but cannot repair a promise that never resolves. Change one condition—browser build, sandbox, writable path, context reuse or concurrency—then rerun the same reproducer and compare logs.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
launch() never completes |
Executable, dependencies, sandbox or installation | Enable dumpio, verify the browser path, run the dependency check and inspect sandbox errors. |
launch() completes; newPage() stalls |
Browser crash, connection health, profile path or resource pressure | Check Chromium stderr and process state, use a writable user-data directory, and test one fresh browser with no concurrency. |
newPage() completes; goto() stalls |
Navigation, DNS, proxy, target site or wait condition | Log before and after navigation, use a minimal URL, and test a different waitUntil condition. |
| Works locally but not in a container | Libraries, sandbox, filesystem permissions or architecture | Compare versions and user IDs, install current dependencies, and mount writable profile/cache directories. |
| Fails only after hours | Lifecycle leak, browser crash or accumulated resource use | Track browser process health, page/context counts and cleanup; compare periodic browser restarts with context isolation. |
| Very slow only on Cloud Run | CPU deallocation after response | Keep CPU allocated until Puppeteer work finishes. |
Make the diagnostic repeatable
- Save the exact Puppeteer and Chromium versions, Node.js version and OS image.
- Record whether you use a bundled browser or an externally installed executable.
- Log launch, connection, page creation, navigation and cleanup separately.
- Capture Chromium stderr, container logs and process exit information.
- Run one page with no application concurrency, then add workers gradually.
- Keep credentials, cookies and target URLs out of shared issue logs.
These records distinguish a browser crash from a transport problem and a page-creation fault from a navigation wait. Issue titles such as “browser.newPage() hangs” describe an observation, not a measured frequency; no representative statistic establishes how often any one cause occurs.

If your goal is a clean website image rather than maintaining Chromium, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
Use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports and retina scale; PDF paper sizes, margins, landscape and page ranges; HTML/CSS rendering; custom JavaScript and CSS; clicks, selector or network-idle waits; request, ad, tracker and resource blocking; headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization; timezone and geolocation; transparent backgrounds; resizing; chosen cache TTLs; signed image links; asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call; a usage API and OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration.
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; every feature is available on every plan. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer define a timeout for Browser.newPage()?
Its API reference documents a Promise that creates a page in the default browser context, but does not specify a per-call timeout or a universal hang diagnosis.
Should I restart the browser whenever newPage() stalls?
Use a restart as a controlled comparison after collecting logs. If it restores service, investigate the preceding crash, resource leak or lifecycle pattern instead of treating restarts as the root-cause fix.
Is –no-sandbox safe for production?
Puppeteer strongly discourages running without a sandbox. Configure a usable sandbox unless you have a narrowly defined, trusted-content scenario and understand the security impact.
