In Chrome, DevTools provides all three options. For repeated or automated captures, use a screenshot API instead of doing the work manually.
Choose the right kind of screenshot

A full-page image is not the same as a normal screen capture: it must include content that is outside the current viewport. Long pages can produce very tall files, so confirm that the destination app supports them.
Take a screenshot from a link in Chrome
Capture the visible viewport
- Open the link in Chrome and wait for the page to finish rendering.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Option+I on Mac, to open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode by clicking the phone-and-tablet icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+M (Mac).
- Open the Device Mode More options menu (the three-dot menu in the device toolbar).
- Choose Capture screenshot. Chrome saves the visible viewport as an image, normally in your Downloads folder.
Capture the entire page
- Open the link and DevTools, then enable Device Mode.
- Set the device preset or enter the viewport dimensions you want. The result reflects that viewport width, not necessarily your monitor’s width.
- Open More options in the device toolbar.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Find the downloaded image in your browser’s Downloads folder and check the top, bottom, sticky headers, lazy-loaded images, and interactive sections.
Chrome’s full-size command captures content outside the visible viewport. If the page loads more content only after scrolling, wait for that content first; otherwise it may not appear.
Capture only part of the page
- Open the page and keep DevTools docked inside the browser window. Chrome’s documented area workflow does not work when DevTools is undocked.
- Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+P on Mac.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag over the region to save. Release the mouse to create the image.
This is useful when a full-page capture contains unrelated content. Repeat the command if you need several regions.

Take a full-page screenshot in Firefox
Firefox includes a screenshot feature and its documentation describes a –fullpage option for saving the entire webpage. The exact menu labels can vary by Firefox version, so open the current browser’s screenshot command and look for the full-page choice. The result is saved to the browser’s Downloads directory. If you need a precise viewport or selected rectangle, Chrome DevTools offers more explicit documented commands.
Use a browser extension
The Chrome Web Store listing for GoFullPage describes an extension that automatically scrolls through a webpage and exports an image or PDF. It is a third-party option, not a built-in Chrome feature. Review its current permissions, availability, and changelog before installing; the listing’s displayed changelog includes an entry dated September 24, 2026, and extension behavior can change.
Extensions are convenient for occasional full-page captures, but they add a dependency to your browser profile. Do not install one in a managed work browser without checking your organization’s policy.

Automate a screenshot from a URL
For a recurring report, a test suite, or a list of links, use an API. Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering screenshot API accepts a URL or HTML and documents viewport, fullPage, and clip options. An API is a software workflow rather than a desktop instruction: you send a request, wait for rendering, and store the returned image. The cited documentation does not establish pricing or partner terms, so confirm those separately before budgeting.

Make captures reliable
- Wait for dynamic content: use a selector wait, a delay, or network-idle waiting when charts and images appear after initial HTML.
- Control the viewport: record the width, height, device preset, and retina scale so later captures are comparable.
- Handle consent correctly: a banner can cover the page or change its layout. Accept it manually in a browser, or use ScreenshotNeo’s consent handling.
- Check lazy loading: scroll through long pages before a manual capture. For automation, use a full-page option that loads lazy images.
- Protect private pages: keep API keys out of client-side code and use headers, cookies, or Authorization only on a trusted server.
- Choose a useful format: PNG preserves sharp text, JPEG is smaller for photographic pages, WebP often balances size and quality, and PDF is better for paginated documents.
Troubleshooting
The full-page option is missing
Enable Chrome Device Mode first, then open its More options menu. The full-size command belongs to the device toolbar, not the ordinary browser context menu.

Area capture does nothing
Dock DevTools inside the browser and run the Command Menu again. Undocked DevTools prevents the documented area workflow.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Wait for the page to finish loading, disable extensions that alter the page, and check whether content requires scrolling, login, geolocation, or a consent action. In an API workflow, add an explicit selector wait or delay and inspect the response status.

Images or charts are missing
They may be lazy-loaded or rendered after JavaScript runs. Scroll the page before a manual capture, or configure a full-page capture and a wait condition in your API request.

The output is too large
Use a narrower viewport, capture a selected area, reduce retina scale, resize the image, or choose WebP. For very long pages, PDF may be easier to share than one extremely tall bitmap.
An automated request times out
Confirm that the URL is publicly reachable, increase the client timeout, and wait for a specific element instead of waiting indefinitely for every network request. Retry transient failures and record the returned verdict and billing headers.
