The simplest way to automate a screenshot on an iPhone is a Shortcut containing the Take Screenshot action. Run that shortcut with a tap or Siri, then add actions to save, rename, resize or share the image. This is user-triggered automation, not a general-purpose system for silently capturing your screen at arbitrary times. For repeatable app screenshots in a development pipeline, use Xcode Device Hub or XCTest instead.
Choose the workflow that matches your goal
| Route | Best for | How it starts | Where the result is handled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware buttons | A single personal screenshot | Side button plus Volume Up, or the appropriate Home-button combination | Photos |
| Siri, AssistiveTouch or Back Tap | Capturing without the usual button gesture | User-invoked voice, accessibility control or tap on the back of the phone | Photos |
| Shortcuts and Take Screenshot | A repeatable personal workflow with follow-up steps | Tap the shortcut or ask Siri | Whatever destination your shortcut specifies |
| Xcode Device Hub | Reviewing an app on a simulator or physical device | Navigate the running app, then capture in Xcode | Mac desktop at device resolution |
| XCTest | Automated UI tests and evidence attached to test runs | Test code | Test or activity attachments |
Apple describes Shortcuts as a way to automate tasks with a tap or Siri. The specific Take Screenshot action is identified in action documentation and referenced in Apple developer discussions; the visible action list can vary with your installed iOS version.

Build an on-demand screenshot Shortcut
- Open Shortcuts. Tap + to create a new shortcut and choose Add Action.
- Find the capture action. Search for Take Screenshot and add it. If it is not shown, update iOS where practical and search again; Apple’s general Shortcuts overview is not a complete catalog of every action.
- Add what should happen next. Add actions such as Save to Photo Album, Resize Image, Convert Image, Save File or Share. The screenshot output from the preceding action should be passed into these steps.
- Name and expose the shortcut. Give it a distinctive name, then use Add to Home Screen, a Shortcuts widget, Siri or another personal trigger available on your device.
- Test on the exact screen you need. Open the app or page first, invoke the shortcut, and confirm the image and destination. A shortcut invocation is not evidence of an unattended background capture.
Example: save a dated copy to Files
After Take Screenshot, add Set Name or a text-building step that combines a label with the current date, then Save File to an iCloud Drive folder. If you also want the normal Photos copy, add Save to Photo Album as a separate step. The exact action labels and available variables depend on the iOS version and installed apps.
Use accessibility and voice triggers
For a one-off capture, Apple documents Siri, AssistiveTouch and Back Tap as alternatives to the hardware buttons. These are still user-invoked. They do not turn an iPhone into a scheduler that can capture arbitrary screens while you are away.

Where iPhone screenshots are stored and edited
Apple states that screenshots are automatically saved to your photo library. In Photos, open Collections, then Media Types, and choose Screenshots. A Shortcut can additionally copy the image to Files, a shared album or another service.
Full-page captures
When the current app supports it, the screenshot editor can offer Full Page for content extending beyond the visible screen. Availability is context-dependent; do not expect it in every app or view. The editor also supports cropping and Markup. Display settings can affect how captures appear, including choices related to SDR or HDR.
What iOS does not provide through this method
The documented material supports a Shortcut that you start yourself and developer capture through testing tools. It does not establish a supported, general mechanism for silently taking screenshots at any time in the background. A scheduled personal automation may run only where iOS permits that trigger, and it should not be presented as an arbitrary-screen capture service. Protected or restricted app content can also limit what a screenshot contains.

Automate app screenshots with Xcode Device Hub
If your target is an app under development rather than your personal phone, Xcode is the more repeatable route. Device Hub can work with a simulator or a paired physical device.
- Launch the app on the desired simulator or connected iPhone from Xcode.
- Navigate to the exact state you want to document: for example, a localized screen, an accessibility setting or a first-run flow.
- Use Device Hub’s screenshot control to capture the running device.
- Locate the resulting image on the Mac desktop. The documented capture is saved at the device’s full resolution.
A simulator is useful for repeatable layouts, but it does not reproduce every physical-device feature or performance characteristic. Verify hardware-dependent behavior on a physical device before treating a capture as representative.
Capture screens in XCTest UI tests
For regression evidence, XCTest provides screenshot objects for a screen, an app window or a UI element. Attach the object to a test or activity so the image travels with the test result rather than relying on a manually copied file.

Typical test shape
- Launch the app and drive it to the state under test with XCUITest interactions.
- Create an
XCUIScreenshotfor the screen, application or target element. - Create an attachment from that screenshot and add it to the test activity.
- Run the test on the simulator or physical device and inspect the attachment in Xcode’s test report.
This approach is for developers: it gives each test run a reproducible context and keeps screenshots alongside pass/fail information. It is separate from configuring a consumer Shortcut on an iPhone.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a website—rather than the screen of an iPhone app—ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one request. It is not a replacement for capturing a protected native-app screen, but it is useful for web-page snapshots in scripts, documentation and AI workflows.

Troubleshooting
“Take Screenshot” is missing
The action catalog is version-dependent and Apple’s overview does not enumerate every action. Confirm that you are editing a normal shortcut, search the exact phrase, and install available iOS updates. If the action remains unavailable, use the documented hardware, Siri, AssistiveTouch or Back Tap methods, or capture an app through Xcode.
The shortcut runs but saves nothing
Check that a destination action follows the capture and that Shortcuts has permission to access Photos or Files. Run the shortcut interactively and inspect each step’s output. A screenshot action alone may produce an image without placing a second copy in a folder you expect.
The image is not full page
Full Page is offered only in supported contexts. Try the capture from the page’s supported document or browser view and look for the Full Page option in the editor. For other screens, use a sequence of captures or a developer workflow rather than assuming the option is universal.

The Xcode capture does not match the phone
Simulator output can differ from physical hardware. Pair a real device, repeat the navigation and capture there, especially for camera, sensor, performance, rendering or other hardware-dependent behavior.
Tests do not show an attachment
Ensure the screenshot is attached to the active test or activity and that the test completes normally. Review the generated test report in Xcode; an image written to a local path is not automatically a test attachment.
Practical decision checklist
- Choose Shortcuts when a person can start the capture and you want automatic saving or processing.
- Choose Device Hub when a developer needs a device-resolution image from a running app.
- Choose XCTest when screenshots belong in automated UI-test evidence.
- Use ScreenshotNeo when the subject is a public or authenticated website and you want an HTTP or MCP workflow instead of browser setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an iPhone take screenshots every hour without any interaction?
The documented workflows do not establish a general, silently running arbitrary-time screenshot system. Shortcuts is intended for user-triggered runs, while Xcode and XCTest are developer capture and testing tools.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will a Shortcut capture the entire page in every app?
No. Full Page is offered only in supported contexts; ordinary app screens may produce only the visible viewport.
Do I need a Mac to automate a personal iPhone screenshot?
No. The Shortcuts, Siri, AssistiveTouch and Back Tap methods run on the iPhone. A Mac is relevant to Xcode Device Hub and XCTest development workflows.
