Use Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) through Selenium when you need an image that extends below the viewport. Selenium’s ordinary save_screenshot() method is the simplest starting point, but its documented behavior is best effort. For an explicitly beyond-viewport Chrome capture, call CDP’s Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport enabled, then decode the returned base64 image. The exact Selenium method signature depends on your Selenium binding and Chrome version, so keep those versions aligned and verify the generated API for your installation.
Choose the right capture method
Your choice depends on whether you need an image or a printable document, and whether Chrome-specific behavior is acceptable.

For a portable test suite, treat CDP as an isolated Chrome adapter. Selenium describes WebDriver BiDi as its standards-based cross-browser direction, but you should check current BiDi support for the exact screenshot operation before treating it as a drop-in replacement.
Prerequisites and version discipline
- Install Selenium for your language and have Chrome available on the machine that runs the test.
- Record the Selenium and Chrome versions in your build logs. CDP command names and generated binding signatures are tied to browser protocol versions.
- Use the Selenium API documentation generated for your installed version. The Java example commonly shown in documentation is generated for Selenium 4.22.0 and DevTools v124; do not copy that signature into a different version without checking it.
- Decide whether the output is an image (PNG, JPEG or another format supported by your binding) or a PDF before writing the capture code.
Fast path: Selenium’s normal screenshot API
Start with the ordinary WebDriver endpoint when a best-effort full-page result is acceptable. This Python example waits for the document to finish loading, saves a PNG and reports the file path.

Explicit beyond-viewport capture with Chrome CDP
Chrome’s Page domain defines captureBeyondViewport as “Capture the screenshot beyond the viewport.” Its protocol default is false, so set it explicitly when content below the initial viewport is required. CDP also accepts a clip describing a region and returns image data encoded as base64.
Python: call the CDP command and decode the result
Selenium Python exposes CDP commands through execute_cdp_cmd. The command shape below follows the protocol: ask for PNG output and enable beyond-viewport capture. If your installed Selenium release rejects a parameter, consult that release’s generated DevTools API and adjust the binding-specific spelling.

Capture only a region with clip
Use a clip when a full document is unnecessary or when you need a predictable rectangle. A clip contains an origin, width, height and scale. Coordinates are CSS pixels in the page’s layout; confirm the dimensions for your target page and device scale.

)A clip is not a substitute for discovering a document’s actual height. It deliberately limits the image to the rectangle you specify. For a complete page, omit it or calculate a page-specific rectangle after inspecting the document.
Device scale, format and quality
- PNG: lossless and convenient for visual tests; it can be large.
- JPEG: smaller for photographic pages, with lossy compression. Supply a quality value if your binding and protocol version support it.
- Scale: a higher device scale can improve sharpness but increases memory use and output size.
- Viewport: set a deliberate window size before navigation. Responsive layouts can otherwise produce different content and wrapping between runs.
Make lazy and dynamic content settle before capture
“Full page” describes the image bounds, not whether every application has finished rendering. Lazy images, infinite lists, ads and client-side components may load only after scrolling or after a framework-specific condition. There is no universal Selenium wait that guarantees all such content is ready.
Use an explicit application condition
Prefer a stable selector or JavaScript flag owned by the page. Selenium’s explicit waits avoid an arbitrary sleep when possible.

Trigger lazy loading deliberately
Some pages load images only when an element approaches the viewport. A controlled scroll sequence can trigger those observers, followed by a final wait. This is page-specific: scrolling may change sticky headers, fire analytics, or load an infinite feed whose length never stabilizes.

Printing to PDF instead of making an image
If the deliverable is a document for printing or archiving, use Selenium’s page-printing operation in headless Chromium. Printing applies pagination, paper size and print CSS; it is not equivalent to a single tall bitmap. Keep separate code paths and validate page breaks, margins and background colors for your target document.

Common failures and fixes
The image contains only the visible viewport
Cause: the normal WebDriver endpoint returned its best-effort result, or the CDP flag was omitted. Fix: use Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport: true, and verify that your Selenium binding accepts the command.

unknown command or an invalid-parameter error
Cause: a Chrome/Selenium/CDP version mismatch, a renamed generated method, or a parameter unsupported by that protocol version. Fix: record the versions, consult the matching Selenium API and Chrome DevTools Protocol reference, and isolate the CDP call so the rest of the test remains portable.
The output file cannot be opened
Cause: the base64 string was written directly, truncated, or decoded into the wrong extension. Fix: decode result["data"] with a base64 decoder and use an extension matching the requested format.
Images or sections are missing
Cause: lazy loading or client-side rendering had not completed. Fix: wait for an application-specific selector or state, trigger lazy loading when appropriate, and capture only after the page reaches that state.
Memory or timeout failures on very long pages
Cause: a tall raster image can require substantial memory, especially with a high device scale or large viewport. Fix: reduce scale, capture intentional clips, split a long document into sections, or produce a paginated PDF instead. Keep an explicit timeout and save browser logs so CI failures are diagnosable.

The screenshot differs between machines
Cause: responsive breakpoints, fonts, device scale, animations, time zones or asynchronous content differ. Fix: pin the Chrome/Selenium environment, set the viewport, disable or freeze animations when your application permits it, wait for deterministic state, and compare images with a tolerance appropriate to your test.

- Set a deterministic viewport and output format.

Does Selenium’s standard screenshot method always capture the entire page?
No. Selenium documents it as best effort, preferring the entire page and falling back to the window or visible frame. Use Chrome CDP when beyond-viewport capture is a requirement.
What does captureBeyondViewport change?
It tells Chrome’s Page.captureScreenshot command to capture content outside the current viewport. The protocol default is false.
Can I use this CDP method with Firefox or Safari?
No. Page.captureScreenshot is a Chrome DevTools Protocol surface. A cross-browser implementation should use standards-based WebDriver features where available and verify current WebDriver BiDi support for the exact operation.
When should I create a PDF instead of a screenshot?
Choose PDF when print pagination, paper size and selectable document output matter. Choose a screenshot for a raster image used in visual review or page previews.
