Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An “open-source screenshot API” can mean two different things: a browser-automation library you call from your own code, or a self-hosted HTTP service that accepts capture requests. For control over rendering and infrastructure, use Playwright or deploy a project such as Webshot or ShotAPI. If you want an endpoint without operating browser infrastructure, use a hosted service. The right choice depends on whether you want a library, a service you run, or an API someone else operates.
What an open-source screenshot API actually is
A screenshot API turns a web page into an image or document through code. The phrase is ambiguous because projects can expose very different interfaces:
- Browser automation library: your application launches or connects to a browser, navigates to a page, and asks the browser to capture it. Playwright’s
page.screenshot()is this kind of API. It is not, by itself, a hosted HTTP endpoint. - Self-hosted HTTP screenshot service: you run a web service that accepts a URL and capture options, then returns or stores an image. Webshot and ShotAPI document this model.
- Public screenshot API: a provider runs the service and exposes an endpoint for your application. Access requirements, limits, output formats, and billing depend on the provider.
These options are not interchangeable. A library gives you low-level control but makes your application responsible for browser execution. A self-hosted service gives callers a convenient HTTP contract while leaving deployment and operations with you. A hosted API minimizes browser operations but makes you dependent on the provider’s terms and service.
The project documentation linked below describes features and setup, not independently verified reliability or comparative performance. There is no benchmark here that establishes one option as fastest or cheapest.

Which approach should you choose?
| Approach | Best fit | What you operate | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo, hosted API | You want an HTTP request rather than browser setup, with documented capture and cleanup options. | Your integration and API credentials. | Plan limits, usage and whether its request options fit your job. |
| Playwright library | You need browser-level control inside an existing application or test workflow. | Browser installation, execution capacity, concurrency, and output handling. | How the library’s screenshot behavior maps to your capture and deployment needs. |
| Webshot, self-hosted service | You want an HTTP service and are willing to deploy and maintain its components. | Docker Compose deployment, authentication, jobs, storage, and cleanup. | Its documented request limits and operational dependencies. |
| Screenshot Studio public API | You want to try a documented anonymous public API. | Your caller and its handling of per-IP limits and failures. | Whether anonymous access and its published contract suit your use case. |
| ShotAPI, self-hosted service | You want an HTTP capture endpoint with documented format and rendering controls. | Node/npm or Docker deployment and Playwright Chromium. | Its current setup, compatibility, and the exact options you need. |
ScreenshotNeo is the first hosted option to consider here: it removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and failed or unclean captures are not billed.
What the documented projects offer
Playwright: capture directly from a browser page
Playwright documents screenshots to a file, a returned buffer, a full scrollable page, or an individual element. Format can be inferred from the filename extension; the reference also documents JPEG/WebP quality behavior, CSS-pixel versus device-pixel scaling, and injected styles for repeatable captures. See the Playwright Screenshots guide and Page API reference.
Playwright describes a full-page capture as “a screenshot of a full scrollable page, as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” That does not make it a public screenshot service: your code still owns browser startup, navigation, and the resulting file or bytes.
Webshot: a self-hosted service with jobs and storage
Webshot’s repository describes a Docker Compose deployment, API-key authentication for endpoints other than health checks, single and batch capture, sitemap-based full-site capture, S3-compatible storage, asynchronous processing, and automatic cleanup with a stated 24-hour default. The README documents up to 10 URLs in an ordinary screenshot request, desktop/mobile viewport selection, full-page capture, and a wait time up to 30 seconds. These are project-documented configuration details and may change; consult the Webshot repository before relying on them. Its README identifies the project as MIT-licensed.

Screenshot Studio: an anonymous public endpoint
Screenshot Studio’s developer portal describes a small public HTTP API that needs no API key or signup and uses per-IP rate limits. It publishes an OpenAPI 3.1 contract and gives an example that sends a URL and reads back a base64 PNG, followed by an export call for WebP. The portal identifies the application as Apache 2.0 licensed. Those statements document the project’s stated design; they do not establish uptime or performance. Review its current contract at Screenshot Studio Developers.
ShotAPI: a self-hostable HTTP endpoint
ShotAPI’s README documents GET /take with PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output; viewport dimensions, full-page capture, device scale, image quality, delay, CSS selector, and dark mode controls; and self-hosting via npm, Playwright Chromium, or Docker. It describes compatibility with ScreenshotOne request parameters and identifies the project license as MIT. Its README also contains free-tier and “Pricing (Coming Soon)” material, which should not be treated as verified current commercial terms. Check the ShotAPI repository for the current interface and setup.
Do it yourself with Playwright
For a Node.js project where you control execution, install Playwright and its browser, then capture a full page. This example writes a PNG to the current directory and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.

- Install Playwright:
npm init -yfollowed bynpm install playwright. - Install the Chromium browser used by Playwright:
npx playwright install chromium. In a Linux container, consult Playwright’s deployment guidance for any required system dependencies. - Save this as
screenshot.jsand runnode screenshot.js.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.screenshot({
path: 'screenshot.png',
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled'
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
This is browser automation, not a network-accessible screenshot API. To expose it to other applications, you would build an HTTP route around the capture logic, validate and constrain requested URLs, decide how to return or store the output, and add authentication, request limits, timeouts, and cleanup.

Useful Playwright capture variants
- Viewport only: omit
fullPage: trueto capture the visible viewport. - Element only: locate an element and call
locator.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' }). Ensure it exists and is visible before capturing. - Bytes instead of a file: call
const image = await page.screenshot(); the returned buffer can be sent in an HTTP response or stored by your application. - JPEG or WebP: use the appropriate screenshot
typeoption and setqualitywhere supported; lossless PNG is often preferable for text and sharp edges. - Repeatability: set viewport and device scale explicitly, wait for the page state your task requires, and use screenshot options such as style injection when dynamic content needs to be stabilized.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request to ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF, and the same endpoint can be called from a script or command line. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for available parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
How to evaluate a self-hosted or public API
A feature checklist alone is not enough. Match the service’s capture contract and operating model to your caller before adopting it.

- Capture target: Does it capture a viewport, a full page, or a selected element? Can it wait for a selector, a delay, or network activity to settle?
- Output: Check image formats, PDF support, dimensions, device scale, quality, and whether the response is bytes, a URL, or a base64 payload.
- Access and limits: Determine whether a key is required, how rate limits work, how errors are represented, and whether the service restricts batch size or wait duration.
- Operations: For self-hosting, account for browser installation, containers, concurrency, storage, asynchronous jobs, cleanup, and monitoring. Webshot documents S3-compatible storage and jobs; those features also introduce components to configure and maintain.
- Integration fit: Compare endpoint paths, parameter names, authentication headers, response shape, and error behavior with your existing caller. ShotAPI documents compatibility with ScreenshotOne request parameters, but verify the options you use.
- Evidence: Read project documentation as a description of intended behavior, not proof of speed, uptime, security posture, or production suitability. No comparative benchmark or independent reliability evidence is established here.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Screenshot time depends on the target page and how much work the browser must do; the reviewed documentation does not establish comparative latency figures. Full-page captures can require more rendering and output than a viewport screenshot, and waiting for network idle can be a poor fit for pages with continuing network activity. Choose a wait condition that reflects the page’s actual readiness rather than adding arbitrary delay everywhere.
When you operate the browser, capacity planning is yours: concurrent captures consume browser and machine resources, and slow or unresponsive pages need timeouts and failure handling. With a self-hosted HTTP service, add the service’s deployment, storage, and job-processing needs. With a public endpoint, examine its published limits and billing rules. No cost comparison among the documented open-source projects is established here; do not infer total cost from a repository license alone.
For a reliable integration, record the status and error response for each job, set upper bounds on navigation and total request time, and decide what happens to partial files or orphaned jobs. If accepting arbitrary URLs, restrict destinations and redirects to reduce the risk of your service being used to access internal network resources. Treat screenshots as potentially sensitive: pages can contain account data, personal information, or one-time tokens, so protect keys, storage, and retention.

Troubleshooting screenshot capture
- Browser executable is missing: install the browser version expected by Playwright with
npx playwright install chromium; in containers, include the necessary system libraries as directed by the runtime documentation. - Navigation times out: the site may be slow, blocked, or continuously active. Increase the timeout only when warranted and consider waiting for a specific selector or a less strict page event instead of network idle.
- The capture is blank or incomplete: verify the requested URL is reachable from the machine running the browser, wait for the relevant content, and check whether client-side rendering or lazy-loaded content needs scrolling or a targeted wait.
- Full-page output differs from what you see: fix viewport and device scale, account for sticky or animated elements, and test whether the page changes its layout when the browser captures beyond the viewport.
- Element capture fails: confirm the selector matches an element and that it has become visible; wait explicitly for the element when rendering is asynchronous.
- Self-hosted request is rejected: check the required API key header, endpoint path, JSON/query parameter names, request size, and documented limits. For Webshot, the README says health checks are the exception to its API-key requirement.
- Anonymous public API stops responding to requests: inspect its documented per-IP rate limits and response contract rather than assuming the endpoint is unlimited; Screenshot Studio documents per-IP limits.
- Unexpected storage or retention behavior: confirm the deployment’s storage configuration and cleanup settings. Webshot’s repository states a 24-hour automatic-cleanup default, which may differ in later revisions or local configuration.
FAQ
Does using Playwright mean I have a screenshot API?
It gives your code screenshot methods on a browser page, but not a ready-made hosted HTTP endpoint. You must expose and operate a service yourself if other applications need to submit HTTP requests.
Are all the projects listed here independently tested?
No. Feature descriptions are attributed to the projects’ own documentation; no hands-on validation or reliability benchmark is claimed.
Is there a dedicated physical product required for this task?
No. The documented approaches are software libraries, services, and ordinary computing infrastructure rather than a dedicated camera or accessory.
