To screenshot a site as it appears in another country, first identify what “country” means for the behavior you are testing. Use Playwright geolocation for pages that read the browser’s location API, locale and timezone settings for language and date/time presentation, and an authorized network connection that exits in the target country for IP-based content. These controls are independent, so a browser set to French coordinates is not proof that the request came from France.
This guide shows a repeatable Playwright workflow, explains when a country-origin network route is required, and covers capture consistency, labeling, failure diagnosis, and an API alternative.
Choose the country signal you need to test
Websites can make different decisions from different signals. Decide the behavior before opening a browser, then change only the variables relevant to that question.

Playwright documents geolocation, locale, timezone, permissions, device profiles, and viewport controls in its Emulation documentation. Its locale and timezone options affect the browser context, not the test runner’s own timezone.

Set up a reproducible test matrix
- Define the target. Write down the country, URL, and expected behavior: browser-location prompt, translated copy, local time, IP restriction, or a combination.
- Freeze session assumptions. Use the same account state, cookies, consent choice, viewport, browser, and capture timing for every comparison. A logged-in user and a first-time visitor may receive different content.
- Separate signals. Run one capture with geolocation only, one with locale/timezone, and one through the country-origin network route when IP targeting matters. This makes the cause of a visual change diagnosable.
- Record the environment. Put the URL, UTC timestamp, target country, browser-versus-network location method, locale, timezone, viewport/device, browser version, and session state in the filename or a sidecar record.
Capture a country-specific page with Playwright
Install Playwright in a Node.js project, then download a browser:

When you need a real country IP
Many services infer country from the connection’s public IP before page JavaScript runs. Playwright’s geolocation setting controls the browser API; its documentation does not claim to route requests through that country. Therefore, use a permitted test connection whose egress is in the target country, then verify the observed result. Do not describe a geolocation-only screenshot as proof of what a local-network visitor sees.
- Keep the network route separate from browser coordinates when isolating causes.
- Use an endpoint approved for your organization and for the site being tested.
- Check that DNS, redirects, authentication, and third-party calls behave through that route.
- Record the egress country and method with the screenshot; an IP database or site response can disagree with the endpoint’s label.
For region-locked services, respect their terms and access controls. A route that works for one domain does not establish that every service will classify it identically.
Make screenshots comparable
Capture timing is part of the test. Wait for a selector that signals the relevant component, a known delay for an animation, or network idle where that is appropriate. Avoid arbitrary waits as a universal rule: pages differ in how they load ads, personalization, and late images.
- Use the same browser engine and version for all locations.
- Keep viewport, device scale, color scheme, reduced-motion preference, and font availability constant unless they are the variable under test.
- Use a fresh context when testing first-visit behavior; reuse a documented context when testing an existing session.
- Capture after consent and other overlays are in the same state.
Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance warns that operating system, browser version, hardware, power state, and headless mode can alter rendering. Keep those conditions stable and document them in your artifact metadata. See the visual comparisons documentation.

Troubleshoot country screenshots
The page shows the same country every time
Check whether the site uses IP targeting rather than browser coordinates. Run the test through an authorized target-country egress and compare the response, redirects, and any country cookie separately from the geolocation run.
The geolocation prompt never appears
Confirm that the context grants geolocation permission, the page is served in a secure context, and the test reaches the code path that calls the browser API. A page may use stored consent or account data instead.
Language changes but prices do not
Locale affects browser language and formatting; it does not guarantee IP-based catalog, currency, tax, or eligibility changes. Test the network signal and inspect the application’s documented account and cookie rules.

Screenshots differ between machines
Standardize browser and OS conditions, fonts, viewport, device scale, headless mode, and power state. Disable animations where appropriate and use stable selectors for readiness. Playwright explicitly notes host-environment rendering differences in its visual-comparison guidance.

The capture contains a banner or chat bubble

What to put beside every image
- Exact URL and UTC capture time.
- Target country and whether it came from browser geolocation, locale/timezone, network egress, or a combination.
- Coordinates, locale, timezone, viewport or device profile, browser and version.
- Account, cookie, consent, and authentication state.
- Network route and any relevant response or redirect observed.
This record turns a visually interesting image into a reproducible test result and prevents readers from mistaking one emulated signal for another.
