If screenshots seem to have stopped working in Windows, first find out which step is failing: the shortcut, the capture tool, the clipboard, saving a file, or OneDrive sync. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to test the snipping overlay. If it opens, take a snip and check for a notification or editor. If it does not, open Snipping Tool from Start. Then use the branches below to locate the problem without assuming every screenshot should appear as a file automatically.
Start with a quick screenshot test
These steps apply to the built-in capture options in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Try them in order; each test bypasses or isolates a different part of the process.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. If the screen-snipping overlay appears, select a region and look for the Snipping Tool notification or editor.
- If that shortcut does nothing, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it. Create a snip from the app. This checks whether the tool works independently of the shortcut.
- If you used the Print Screen key, open Paint and press Ctrl + V. A successful paste means the image was captured to the clipboard even if no file appeared.
- If the capture exists locally but not in OneDrive, troubleshoot the save location and sync separately. A missing cloud copy does not necessarily mean capture failed.
Once you know which test succeeds, use the matching section below rather than changing unrelated settings.
Identify what each Windows capture method does

The clipboard and a saved image file are different outcomes. Print Screen can put an image on the clipboard without creating a visible file, so test with Paint before concluding that capture failed.

When the screenshot shortcut appears to do nothing
Test the shortcuts separately
Try Windows logo key + Shift + S and Print Screen as separate tests. They are not interchangeable: Print Screen can be configured to open screen snipping, while Windows logo key + Shift + S is a direct way to test that overlay. If Snipping Tool opens from Start and captures successfully, but a physical key does not, the issue is more likely to involve the key, its layout, or its device-specific behavior than the capture app itself.
Check the Print Screen setting
Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and check Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. The setting controls whether Print Screen invokes screen snipping. After checking it, test Print Screen again and separately test Windows logo key + Shift + S. If you want to capture directly to the clipboard, verify that your chosen behavior matches what you expect rather than assuming the key always saves a file.
Check laptop key legends and Fn behavior
Some laptops do not have a dedicated Print Screen key, or require a device-specific Fn combination. Inspect the key labels and consult the instructions for that device; there is no single Fn combination that applies to every laptop. If Snipping Tool works but a built-in keyboard key does not, trying another keyboard can help determine whether the problem is with the key or keyboard layout. That is a diagnostic test, not a reason to assume the keyboard must be replaced.

The screen dims, but the screenshot seems to disappear
Look for the Snipping Tool notification and editor
After making a snip, check for the Snipping Tool notification and open the capture in its editor. A capture can be available in the tool even when you have not saved a file to a folder yet. Use the editor’s Save or Save As option to choose a location you can find again.

If you used Print Screen or Alt + Print Screen, open Paint and press Ctrl + V. If the image appears, save it from Paint to create a file. Alt + Print Screen captures the active window, so it is useful when you want to check whether a window-only capture works even if a full-screen result is confusing.
Check the save location
When using Snipping Tool’s save or automatic-save behavior, check the Screenshots folder as well as the location you selected in the editor. If you do not know where a file went, save a new test capture with Save As and explicitly choose a familiar folder. This distinguishes a missing capture from a file saved somewhere unexpected.

Clipboard history is empty—or Win+V does not help
Windows logo key + V opens clipboard history, not a complete record of every capture by default. Clipboard history is off until enabled; Windows prompts you to turn it on when you first open it if it has not been enabled.
An empty history alone does not show that a screenshot failed. Make a capture and test ordinary paste with Ctrl + V in Paint. If the image pastes, the capture reached the clipboard even if it is not present in Win+V history. If it does not, retest with another capture method, such as Snipping Tool from Start, to isolate the capture path.
Find a screenshot that is missing from OneDrive
Confirm that a local image exists first
Check whether Snipping Tool saved a file and which folder it used. If a Print Screen capture was only copied to the clipboard, there may be no local file for OneDrive to sync. Save the image to a folder before diagnosing the cloud copy.

Back up Pictures rather than looking for the old screenshot toggle
Microsoft’s current OneDrive support guidance says, “The ‘Save screenshots to OneDrive’ feature is no longer available in the OneDrive settings.” To back up screenshots, Microsoft advises including the Pictures folder in OneDrive folder backup. This is a folder-backup approach; it is not the same as an old dedicated screenshot-save switch.
Check whether OneDrive is running
If the OneDrive icon is not visible in the taskbar, open Start and launch OneDrive. Then check its sync status and account. If the file is in the backed-up Pictures folder but has not appeared online, the remaining issue is with OneDrive sync rather than Windows capture.
Reset OneDrive only when sync itself is failing
A OneDrive reset may resolve sync problems, but it causes a full sync and resets sync connections. Consider account or work/school management constraints before using it. A reset is not a first step for a screenshot that never reached a local folder or clipboard.

Keep capture, saving, and syncing separate
A reliable diagnosis follows the image through distinct stages: a shortcut or app triggers capture; the result reaches the Snipping Tool workflow or clipboard; a save action creates a local file; and OneDrive may then sync a backed-up folder. Check the earliest stage that fails. If Paint accepts Ctrl+V, capture worked. If a local file exists, capture and saving worked. If only the OneDrive copy is missing, focus on folder backup and sync rather than repeating keyboard troubleshooting.
