“Link preview” can mean several different Outlook features. A missing rich URL card, a hyperlink that cannot be clicked, a plain-text message, a mobile preview, an attachment preview, and the Reading Pane are separate problems. First identify your Outlook client and whether the symptom appears while composing, while reading, or after clicking. Then use the matching fix below.

For Outlook.com and Outlook on the web, the usual fix is Settings > Mail > Compose and reply > Link preview, then select Preview links in email. Microsoft says link previews are enabled by default in these web clients and can show a URL title, thumbnail, and description when available.

Identify what “preview” means in your Outlook

Use this table before changing settings. The controls are not interchangeable.

What you see Likely feature Where to investigate
A card with a title, image, and description when a URL is pasted or received Rich link preview Outlook.com/web Link preview setting; mobile Link Preview setting
The URL is visible but cannot be clicked Disabled links or message formatting New or classic Outlook for Windows security and format checks
A URL appears as ordinary text in a draft Plain Text message format Switch the message to HTML
A snippet of the email appears beside the message list Reading Pane or message-list preview Reading Pane and layout settings
A Word, Excel, or PowerPoint link opens in a different app Office file-link preference Microsoft 365 desktop-versus-browser setting
A web link opens in Edge instead of your preferred browser Browser-opening preference New or classic Outlook browser settings

The Reading Pane controls how much of the email message is shown, not whether Outlook creates a rich card for a URL. Attachment preview is also a separate feature. Microsoft documents Reading Pane behavior at its Reading Pane guidance.

Outlook.com and Outlook on the web: turn on rich previews

Current web settings path

  1. Open Outlook.com or Outlook on the web.
  2. Select the Settings gear.
  3. Choose Mail, then Compose and reply.
  4. Scroll to Link preview.
  5. Select Preview links in email, then save or close Settings.

Microsoft’s current support page says the option is on by default in Outlook.com and Outlook on the web. The preview can include the page title, a thumbnail image, and a description, but Outlook cannot display metadata that the destination page does not provide. See Microsoft’s Link Preview instructions.

Older Outlook on the web layout

Some tenants still show the older navigation. Open Options, or go to Mail > Layout > Link preview, and select Preview links in email. Organization policies can also hide or lock settings; if the control is missing, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator whether a policy is applied.

If only one URL lacks a card

  • Check that the URL is complete and begins with https:// or http://.
  • Try a different public URL. If other sites preview correctly, the issue is likely the destination page’s metadata, robots policy, login wall, or availability rather than Outlook’s setting.
  • Paste the URL into a new HTML-formatted message. A card may not appear for content Outlook cannot fetch or authenticate to.

New Outlook for Windows: distinguish blocked links from missing cards

Remove the Safe-senders link block

New Outlook for Windows has a security option that can block attachments, pictures, and links from senders outside your Safe senders and domains list. Microsoft says links should be enabled by default. If links from ordinary senders are disabled:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Mail, then Junk email.
  3. Under Security options, clear Block attachments, pictures, and links from anyone not in my Safe senders and domains list.
  4. Save the setting and reopen the message.

This restores click access; it is not the Outlook.com rich-card checkbox. The documented Windows procedure is in Microsoft’s disabled-links guidance.

Check the message format

In new Outlook, shared links work only in HTML-formatted messages. In a Plain Text message, Outlook inserts the address as text and it is not clickable. Start a new message, choose the formatting control, switch to HTML, and paste the URL again. If an existing draft was created as Plain Text, changing the format may require deleting and reinserting the address.

Do not confuse a missing rich card with a disabled hyperlink: HTML can make a URL clickable without producing a title-and-thumbnail card.

Classic Outlook for Windows: inspect format and the InfoBar

Use HTML rather than Plain Text

Open the message and check its format. A Plain Text message cannot provide the same clickable-link behavior as HTML. If you are composing, use the format controls to select HTML, then insert the hyperlink again.

Enable external content from the InfoBar

When classic Outlook blocks external pictures or links, an InfoBar may appear above the message stating that content or links are disabled. Use the InfoBar control to enable external content for that message, subject to your organization’s security policy. If no InfoBar appears, the sender, message format, or policy may be the cause; contact your administrator rather than lowering all security protections.

Outlook for iOS and Android

Turn on mobile Link Preview

  1. Open Outlook mobile and tap your account or profile menu.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Find Link Preview and turn it on.

To preview a received URL, tap and hold the link. Microsoft describes this mobile control in Link Preview, Powered by Bing. The mobile setting does not change the Outlook.com web compose setting, and neither one controls the Reading Pane.

When the link works but opens in the wrong place

Web links opening in Microsoft Edge

Outlook can route clicked web links through Microsoft Edge even when another browser is your system default. New and classic Outlook have browser preferences that determine where a click opens. Change that preference if the problem is the destination browser, not the missing preview. Microsoft documents the behavior at Web links from Outlook emails and Teams chats open in Microsoft Edge.

OneDrive and SharePoint Office files

Links to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint can follow a separate Microsoft 365 preference for opening in the desktop application or browser. Adjusting it changes the opening location; it does not create a rich URL card. See Microsoft’s Office file-link instructions.

A practical diagnosis sequence

  1. Name the client: Outlook.com/web, new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook for Windows, iOS, or Android.
  2. Name the symptom: no rich card, unclickable URL, plain text, unexpected browser, or message-list snippet.
  3. Test a known public HTTPS page in a new HTML message.
  4. Apply only the matching setting from the sections above.
  5. Test both composing and reading. A card may be absent in a draft while click protection affects a received message.
  6. Compare with another sender or account. A difference usually points to sender trust, tenant policy, or message format.

Common failures and fixes

“I enabled Link preview, but nothing appears.”

Confirm you changed the setting in the same Outlook client where the problem occurs. Then try a new message and a public URL. A destination that requires sign-in, blocks crawlers, times out, or lacks preview metadata may not produce a card.

“The URL is visible but not clickable.”

In new Outlook, switch the message from Plain Text to HTML and reinsert the URL. In Windows Outlook, also check the security block for senders outside Safe senders and domains.

“Only images are missing.”

Image blocking and URL-card generation are related but distinct. Look for an InfoBar in classic Outlook, and review the new Outlook Junk email security option. Do not change Reading Pane settings to solve an external-image problem.

“The setting is unavailable.”

Your organization may control it through Microsoft 365 policy, or your client may use a different interface. Try Outlook on the web to separate an account policy from a local desktop issue, then contact your administrator with the exact client and symptom.

“The card appears for some sites but not others.”

That pattern usually reflects the destination. Verify that the page is public, responds promptly, and exposes a title, description, and image suitable for link metadata. Outlook cannot manufacture content that the site withholds.

If your goal is to create a dependable image of a URL for documentation, QA, or an email—not to change Outlook’s own card setting—ScreenshotNeo can return a clean PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning on Outlook’s Reading Pane restore link cards?

No. The Reading Pane controls how much of the email message is displayed. Rich URL previews have their own Link preview setting.

Can a recipient force a preview for a private or login-protected URL?

Usually not. Outlook needs to retrieve preview metadata, so a page requiring authentication or blocking retrieval may not produce a card.

Why does changing the browser preference not create a preview?

Browser preference controls where a clicked link opens. It does not control whether Outlook generates a title, image, and description card.
