wkhtmltoimage converts a URL or local HTML file into an image. For a basic full-page capture, provide the page width, a short JavaScript wait if needed, the URL, and an output filename:
wkhtmltoimage --width 1280 --javascript-delay 1000 https://example.com/ page.png
The command’s height is normally calculated from page content, so a fixed --height is generally not needed to get a tall image. But the renderer is legacy software: inspect the output, and use a maintained browser-based option when modern JavaScript, authentication, or dependable current rendering matters.
What the command does—and what “full-page” means
wkhtmltoimage renders a URL or HTML file and writes an image. Its basic syntax is:
wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS] <input URL or HTML file> <output image>
The tool’s documented --height is the screen height, with a default calculated from page content. That makes a fixed height unnecessary in many ordinary captures. It is not a guarantee that every site’s content will appear: pages may reveal images or sections only after scrolling, or depend on browser behavior the old renderer does not support. Check the resulting image rather than assuming the whole modern page was captured.

Capture a URL as a full-page image
- Check that the command is available. Run
wkhtmltoimage --version. If the shell cannot find it, install a package appropriate to your operating system from a trusted source, then confirm the binary is on yourPATH. Package availability can differ from the upstream release. - Choose a viewport width. Start with a width appropriate for the layout, such as
1280pixels for a desktop-style view. - Run the capture. For example:
wkhtmltoimage --width 1280 --javascript-delay 1000 https://example.com/ page.png - Inspect the output. Open
page.pngand check its width, bottom edge, and any content that should have loaded dynamically. Increase the wait or change the width only to address an observed issue.
This example is illustrative, not a claim of a tested capture. The one-second delay is a pause after page loading, not a signal that all asynchronous images, scripts, or components have finished.
Choose width, height, delay, and crop options
| Need | Option | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Set the viewport width | --width <pixels> |
Sets the screen width. The manual describes it as a guide unless strict smart-width behavior is disabled. |
| Make width strict | --disable-smart-width |
Use with --width when you need the specified width to be strict rather than a guide. |
| Set screen height | --height <pixels> |
Sets screen height; by default, height is calculated from page content. It is not a “make the page taller” control. |
| Pause for page scripts | --javascript-delay <msec> |
Waits after page loading for the specified number of milliseconds. JavaScript is enabled by default. |
| Select a rectangular region | --crop-x, --crop-y, --crop-w, --crop-h |
Define crop coordinates and dimensions. Cropping selects a region; it does not extend the page or cause more content to load. |
For example, a strict desktop-width capture with a longer pause can be written as:
wkhtmltoimage --width 1280 --disable-smart-width --javascript-delay 2000 https://example.com/ page.png
Use a fixed delay only when a pause is a reasonable fit for the page. The library reference also describes a post-load delay, and documents --window-status and --run-script as other controls. These can help coordinate capture with page state or script execution, but you still need to verify the image; none should be treated as proof that every asynchronous element is ready.

Capture a local HTML file and its assets
Pass the HTML file path as the input instead of a URL. For example:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
wkhtmltoimage --width 1280 /path/to/page.html page.png
If the page references local images, stylesheets, or fonts, make sure the process can access those files. The command documents local-file access controls, including --allow for permitted paths and controls for local file access. Grant access only to the assets the page needs; broad file access is a security risk, especially when processing HTML you did not create.
Other useful capture controls
Beyond viewport and timing, the command documentation covers a range of options that may matter to a repeatable capture:

- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Image output: select an image format and save using a matching output filename. The example above uses PNG.
- Load failures: configure how load errors are handled so automation can respond appropriately rather than silently treating a failed page as a good capture.
- Cookies and headers: supply request cookies or headers when a page requires them. Treat credentials and session values as secrets; avoid putting them in scripts or logs that others can read.
- User stylesheet: apply a stylesheet to adjust presentation for a capture.
- Local resources: use documented local-file access controls when an HTML file needs linked local assets.
Consult the installed version’s help and the relevant manual before relying on less common switches: distributions may package different builds, and option availability should be verified in the environment where the command will run.
What to check when a capture is incomplete
- The bottom is cut off: check whether the site loads more content only on scroll, whether the page finished rendering, and whether an explicit height or crop limited the output. The default content-calculated height does not promise that scroll-triggered content will be discovered.
- Images or widgets are missing: try a reasonable JavaScript delay and inspect whether the page’s content is asynchronous or requires scrolling. A longer delay may help, but it cannot make an unsupported rendering engine behave like a current browser.
- The layout has the wrong width: adjust
--width; if the width must be strict, pair it with--disable-smart-width. Responsive sites can intentionally render differently at different widths. - Only part of the page appears: review all crop coordinates and dimensions. Crop switches choose a region rather than changing page height.
- Local images or styles are absent: verify the file paths and whether local file access is permitted for the required assets.
- The process fails on a page that works in a current browser: the page may rely on newer web behavior. Try a browser-based renderer rather than endlessly tuning a legacy WebKit capture.
Security and maintenance limitations
The wkhtmltopdf project’s downloads page calls version 0.12.6 its stable series and dates that release June 11, 2020. The upstream GitHub repository was archived on January 2, 2023, and is read-only. Those are upstream project facts; they do not establish that every operating-system package or fork is identical.

For server-side jobs, also restrict filesystem and network access to what the capture needs.

When a browser-based tool is a better fit
For pages that depend on current browser rendering, conditional waits, or authenticated sessions, compare tools by the specific capability you need rather than assuming all screenshot commands work alike. The shot-scraper Release 0.17 documentation describes browser selection, JavaScript and wait options, full-page height by default, and authentication-context support. It is a capabilities comparison, not a performance test or endorsement; that cited documentation does not establish its current release status.
- Modern rendering: prefer a current browser engine when a site’s behavior differs from the older WebKit renderer.
- Dynamic content: use a tool with documented waits that can match the page’s readiness conditions where fixed pauses are unreliable.
- Authentication: check how the tool handles session state and secrets before capturing a protected page.
- Whole-page versus region capture: establish whether you need the entire document, a particular selector, or a coordinate crop.
- Security and maintenance: review the renderer’s maintenance posture and isolate any service that processes user-controlled content.

Frequently asked questions
Does wkhtmltoimage save a PDF?
wkhtmltoimage is for image output. The wkhtmltopdf project also has a separate wkhtmltopdf command for PDF output.
Can I capture only one element?
The crop switches select a rectangular area by coordinates. They are not selector-based element targeting; use a tool with selector capture if you need to identify an element by CSS selector.
Is the one-second delay enough?
There is no universal delay that guarantees every page is ready. Choose timing based on the page’s behavior and inspect the image for missing content.
