To capture an entire webpage in Chrome, open DevTools, enable Device Mode, then choose More options → Capture a full size screenshot. The command captures content below the visible viewport. The right-click Inspect command only opens DevTools on an element; it is the route into DevTools, not the full-page capture button.

What “Inspect” does—and what it does not do

Right-click any page element and select Inspect to open Chrome DevTools with that element selected in the Elements panel. Inspect mode lets you point at page elements and examine their HTML, CSS and dimensions. It does not, by itself, save an image of the whole page.

Full-page capture is a Device Mode command. After opening DevTools, turn on the device-shaped Toggle device toolbar control, then use Device Mode’s More options menu. Select Capture a full size screenshot, not the similarly named viewport command.

How to take a full-page screenshot in Chrome

  1. Open the page. Navigate to the exact URL you want to capture and wait for its visible content to finish loading.
  2. Open DevTools. Right-click a page element and choose Inspect. You can also open DevTools through Chrome’s menu. The Inspect-mode shortcuts documented by Chrome are Cmd+Option+C on macOS and Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS; those shortcuts activate inspection, not full-page export.
  3. Enable Device Mode. Click the device-toolbar icon in DevTools. A responsive viewport and device controls appear above the page.
  4. Set the capture viewport if needed. Choose a device preset or enter a custom width and height. The selected viewport affects how responsive layouts render.
  5. Open More options. In the Device Mode toolbar, open the three-dot More options menu.
  6. Choose the full-page command. Click Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves an image containing the entire page, including content outside the current viewport.
  7. Check the downloaded file. Open the image and inspect the top, bottom and any responsive sections. Very long or highly dynamic pages may need another capture after their content settles.

Including a device frame

If you selected a device-specific mode and want the handset or tablet bezel around the page, enable Show device frame in Device Mode before taking the capture. The frame is an optional presentation layer; it is not required for a full-page image.

Choosing the correct Chrome screenshot command

Command What it captures Where to run it Important condition
Capture a full size screenshot The whole page, including content below the viewport Device Mode → More options Use this for an entire webpage
Capture screenshot Only the currently visible viewport Device Mode → More options Content below the fold is excluded
Capture area screenshot A region you select DevTools Command Menu Chrome notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked
Network-panel screenshots Visual frames recorded during loading Network panel Useful for analyzing load states, not for one full-page export
Performance-panel screenshots Frames recorded during a performance trace Performance panel Useful for performance analysis, not a full-page save command

If the labels have moved in your Chrome version, open the DevTools Command Menu and search for “screenshot.” Confirm that the selected command explicitly says full size. Do not choose Capture area screenshot when you need the complete document.

Responsive and page-state details that affect the result

Viewport width changes the layout

Device Mode can trigger mobile breakpoints, alternate navigation and different typography. For a desktop-style capture, enter a desktop-width viewport. For a mobile capture, select the intended device preset or set its width manually. Capture one width at a time when you need reliable comparisons.

Dynamic content may still be changing

Single-page applications, carousels, ads and lazy sections can change while DevTools is open. Wait for the page to reach the state you want, stop animations where practical, and then run the full-size command. If a cookie dialog or chat bubble obscures content, dismiss or hide it before capturing.

Device frames are separate from page content

Show device frame adds a visual frame around a device-specific capture. It does not alter the page’s CSS viewport and is optional. Leave it off when you need an image containing only webpage pixels.

Troubleshooting full-page captures

The full-size option is missing

  • Confirm that Device Mode is enabled; the command belongs to the Device Mode toolbar.
  • Open the Device Mode More options menu rather than the page’s right-click menu.
  • Use the Command Menu to search for “screenshot” if the toolbar layout differs in your Chrome release.
  • Make sure you are not looking at a Network or Performance panel screenshot control; those record loading or trace frames.

The downloaded image shows only the visible area

You probably selected Capture screenshot, which is a viewport capture. Repeat the process and choose Capture a full size screenshot. The words “full size” are the important distinction.

The page is clipped, blank or incomplete

  • Reload the page and wait for scripts, fonts and images to finish before capturing.
  • Close transient overlays or consent dialogs that prevent the page from rendering.
  • Try a different viewport width if a responsive layout is producing an unusable state.
  • For pages that continuously append content, capture after scrolling through the document once so the page has a chance to load its sections.

The screenshot command does nothing

Dock DevTools to the browser window and retry. Undocked DevTools specifically affects the Command Menu’s area-screenshot workflow, and docking also makes it easier to confirm that you are using Device Mode’s full-size command. If Chrome’s UI has changed, search the Command Menu for the exact “full size” wording.

The image has an unwanted device bezel

Turn off Show device frame before capturing. The frame setting is independent of whether the page itself is captured full length.

The result differs from what a visitor sees

Check the selected device preset, viewport width, zoom and page state. Responsive CSS can select a different navigation or content order at another width. Also account for logged-in state, geolocation, time-dependent content and overlays that were present during capture.

When DevTools is the right tool

  • One-off documentation: You need a visual record of a page exactly as rendered in your browser.
  • Responsive QA: You want to compare desktop and mobile breakpoints using specific viewport dimensions.
  • Debugging: The screenshot accompanies an Elements, Network or Performance investigation.
  • Private or authenticated pages: The page is already available in your signed-in browser session and should not be sent to another service.

For repeatable captures across many URLs, scheduled jobs, server-side rendering or a workflow that must run without a desktop browser, an API is usually easier to automate.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for parameter details. This cURL example captures Stripe and writes a WebP file:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The equivalent Python request is:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

In Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture, lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector or network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration.

Reliability, privacy and cost decisions

Use local DevTools when session context matters

A local capture keeps the current browser session, extensions and authentication context in your environment. That is useful for internal pages, but it is manual and difficult to reproduce at scale.

Use an API when consistency matters

An API lets you specify viewport, waits, cookies, headers, scripts and blocking rules in code. Cache TTLs can reduce repeated work, while asynchronous jobs and webhooks separate long captures from the request that starts them. Always review the target site’s access rules and avoid sending credentials unless your security design permits it.

Understand what is billed

With ScreenshotNeo, only clean shots are billed. Failed loads, blank pages, bot checks, CAPTCHAs, timeouts and cache hits are reported in response headers and cost nothing. The free allowance is monthly; paid prices correspond to the listed plan quantities.

Frequently asked questions

Can I capture just one element instead of the whole page?

Chrome’s full-size command targets the page. For a precise element workflow, an automation tool or ScreenshotNeo’s CSS-selector element capture is more suitable.

Does “full size” mean a PDF?

No. Chrome’s command saves an image. A PDF is a separate output type; ScreenshotNeo provides PDF capture with paper size, margins, orientation and page-range controls.

Why does Chrome call the right-click option Inspect?

Inspect is the entry point for examining an element in DevTools. The full-page export lives in Device Mode, so the two labels refer to different actions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Can an AI assistant take these screenshots?

Not through Chrome’s menu automatically. ScreenshotNeo’s MCP server exposes screenshot, page-information and PDF tools to MCP-compatible clients such as Claude and Cursor.
