The cleanest way to edit a website screenshot is usually to change the webpage in Chrome DevTools and capture it again. That preserves real browser-rendered text and spacing. If you only have a PNG or JPEG, edit the image in Photoshop or GIMP; if you want to redesign the screen collaboratively, rebuild it as editable layers in Figma. The right method depends on whether you can access the live page and whether the result must remain faithful to what the site actually displayed.
Choose the right way to edit it
A screenshot is a raster image: its text and interface are pixels, not editable webpage elements. That makes changing a word in an existing image harder than changing the page and recapturing it. Use this quick guide:

For a faithful correction, use the live page when possible. Image editing can conceal or replace pixels, but it cannot restore the webpage’s underlying text, layout rules, or behavior. Figma is useful for a redesign, not as proof of exactly how the original page looked.
Edit the live page with Chrome DevTools
DevTools lets you preview changes to the rendered page in your browser. You can edit visible text and CSS in the Elements panel, or use the Sources panel to edit CSS and JavaScript and run saved Snippets. Chrome documents these editing capabilities in its Sources panel guide and DOM and CSS guide.

- Open the page at the intended size. Set the browser window or device emulation to the viewport you want in the final capture. Responsive layouts can change at different widths.
- Open DevTools. Right-click the target text or element and choose Inspect. DevTools opens with the corresponding node selected in Elements.
- Make the change. Double-click a text node to edit its displayed text, or change a CSS declaration in the Styles pane to preview color, font, spacing, or other visual properties. The change is local to the current browser session.
- Check the whole composition. Review line wrapping, alignment, contrast, and nearby elements. A shorter replacement string can leave awkward whitespace; a longer one can wrap or push content down.
- Capture the result. Use the DevTools Command Menu or device toolbar to capture the viewport, a selected node, or a full-size page. Chrome’s screenshot documentation describes the available capture options.
For repeatable changes, use a Snippet or Workspace
If a change involves multiple elements or you expect to repeat it, a JavaScript Snippet can apply the edits consistently. In DevTools, open Sources and use the Snippets area to create and run a snippet. For example, this changes the text of a page element selected by CSS:

Replace .headline with a selector that identifies the element on the page. This is a browser-side preview, not a permanent site edit. DevTools changes disappear when the page reloads unless you save the corresponding source files in a Workspace and make the changes in the actual project.
Capture a full page or one element
For a full-page capture, use the DevTools Command Menu and search for the full-size screenshot command, or use the device toolbar’s capture controls. To isolate a component, select its node in Elements and use the capture-node option available through the Command Menu. Check the output before sharing: sticky headers, lazy-loaded images, and content that appears only after scrolling may render differently from the visible viewport.

When the live page is unavailable, use a raster editor. Photoshop on the web supports markup and annotations, including drawing on an image and generating a new layer for edits; see Adobe’s Photoshop markup guide. GIMP is a free, open-source local option, described in the GIMP project site.

- Preserve the original. Save a separate working copy or duplicate the original layer before editing.
- Crop to the purpose. Remove irrelevant areas before adding callouts or replacement content. Keep the original dimensions if the image must fit an existing document or layout.
- Redact sensitive details first. Cover account numbers, email addresses, access tokens, or personal information with an opaque fill, or blur them. Inspect the result at 100% zoom and check the edges; a weak blur or a partial cover can leave text legible.
- Add annotations on separate layers. Put arrows, highlights, labels, and replacement text on layers separate from the screenshot where your editor allows it. This makes revisions easier and avoids damaging the source pixels.
- Export and verify. PNG is generally appropriate for crisp interface text or transparency. JPEG can suit photographic content when a smaller file is more important than preserving sharp text. Reopen the exported file and confirm its dimensions, legibility, and redactions.
Replacing text in a flattened screenshot
To change text in an image, you must first conceal the old pixels, then place new text over them. Matching the background, font, weight, size, antialiasing, and line spacing takes care. If the background is patterned or the text overlaps other elements, retouching can look conspicuous. When the live page is available, editing it and recapturing is typically cleaner.
Turn a captured screen into an editable Figma design
Figma documents workflows for capturing a production website into Figma Design or FigJam and converting coded screens into editable layers. Its inspection features can expose layout, color, typography, text strings, component properties, styles, and variables. See Figma’s inspection guide.
- Capture the relevant page or section. Use Figma’s documented website capture workflow to bring the screen into a design file.
- Inspect the design properties. Use the available inspection information as a reference for typography, colors, dimensions, and component details.
- Make the redesign in editable layers. Replace text, rearrange elements, and revise the layout in the design file rather than painting over the screenshot.
- Export or share for review. Export the frame or share the design file with collaborators.
Expect to review the result manually. Browser effects, fonts, and dynamic states may need cleanup, and a reconstructed design is not evidence that the original site looked exactly the same.
Redact private information safely
If a screenshot contains personal or confidential information, redact it before it leaves your device or is shared. Use an opaque cover when the underlying pixels must be unrecoverable; a blur is not a reliable substitute for secure removal in every case. Inspect the exported file at full size, including the edges of each redaction, and reopen the final copy to confirm the sensitive information is not visible. Keep an untouched original separately if you need it for legitimate recordkeeping.

Troubleshoot common problems
The DevTools text change disappeared
That is expected for an unsaved browser-side edit. DevTools changes are temporary unless you save changes to the source project through a Workspace. If you only need a capture, make the edit again and take the screenshot before reloading.
The edited text does not fit
Check the viewport width and the element’s CSS constraints. A different string may wrap, overflow, or alter the height of its container. Adjust the previewed styles or shorten the replacement, then inspect the surrounding layout before capturing.

Confirm that you captured the full page rather than only the viewport. Wait for the page’s images and dynamic content to load; lazy-loaded elements may not appear until they enter the viewport. For an API capture, use a suitable wait condition such as a selector or network idle when the page needs time to render.
The image edit looks patched
The old text may not have been fully covered, or the replacement font, background, or spacing may not match. Keep the original, work on a separate layer, zoom in, and consider changing the live page instead if you have access to it.

A redaction is still readable
Replace the blur with a fully opaque cover, inspect the exported image at full size, and check for stray pixels around the edges. Do not share a file until the final export has been verified.
The Figma reconstruction differs from the website
Treat the capture as a design starting point rather than a pixel-perfect record. Check fonts, browser effects, responsive behavior, and dynamic elements, then adjust layers manually where necessary.
