playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.pngThe result is a PNG containing the page content from top to bottom. The capture is of the webpage itself—not the browser window, operating-system desktop, or address bar. This guide explains one-off commands, reusable scripts, alternative CLIs, dynamic-page pitfalls, and a hosted option when you do not want to maintain a browser.
What “full-page” means
A viewport screenshot records only the current browser dimensions. A full-page screenshot expands the capture to the document’s scrollable height, as though the page were displayed on a very tall screen. Playwright exposes this distinction directly with --full-page in its CLI and fullPage: true in its API. Neither option captures browser chrome or the operating-system desktop.
Inspect the output after capture. Lazy-loaded images, sticky headers, pages that continually append content, animations and changing advertisements can make the final image differ from a static viewport. No browser tool can guarantee identical behavior for every site without page-specific preparation.
Fastest method: Playwright CLI
Install and open the page
Install Playwright using the package manager and browser setup appropriate to your environment, then start a CLI session:

playwright-cli open https://example.comThe CLI is headless by default. The open command establishes the current page that the next command will capture.
Capture the complete document
playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.pngPNG is the default. The extension can select another supported image format:
playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.jpeg
playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.webpIf you omit --filename, the CLI chooses its own output behavior; a predictable filename is preferable in scripts and CI jobs. Playwright also supports --type when you need to specify the format explicitly.

Choose device-pixel resolution
Add --hires to capture device pixels rather than CSS pixels:
playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --hires --filename=full-page.pngHigh-resolution output is useful for documentation or print workflows, but coordinates in the resulting image no longer correspond directly to CSS-pixel coordinates used by mouse commands. Omit it when you will calculate click positions from the screenshot.
Reusable JavaScript with Playwright
For scheduled captures, test fixtures or a larger automation job, use the Playwright API. Install the package and browsers, save this as capture.js, and run it with Node.js:

CSS-pixel scale produces a smaller, layout-oriented image; device-pixel scale preserves more physical pixels. Prepare pages that load content on demand
Navigate, wait for a meaningful condition, then capture. For example:

A fixed delay can help with an animation or delayed widget, but it is less reliable than waiting for a specific element. Full-page capture does not universally force every lazy-loaded resource to load, so verify long pages and adjust page preparation where necessary.

The 0.14.3 manual documents this installation and browser setup:

shot-scraper https://example.com -o full-page.pngIn this version, the default browser dimensions are 1280 pixels wide by 780 pixels high. If you omit --height, the output is full-page length; set --width and --height when a fixed layout is required:
shot-scraper https://example.com --width 1440 --height 900 -o full-page.pngIf you omit an output name, shot-scraper derives one from the URL and adds a numeric suffix when that file already exists. Its manual also describes GitHub Actions use, which can fit repository-based screenshot jobs. Because these details are tied to version 0.14.3, check the current manual if a later release changes a flag: shot-scraper 0.14.3 documentation.

Chrome Headless
Chrome’s documented command-line screenshot example is:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.comThis sets a finite window and should be treated as a viewport capture—not as a verified full-scrollable-page command. The Chrome reference also documents --timeout to bound waiting, --virtual-time-budget to advance time-dependent page code, and --print-to-pdf when the required output is a PDF. The reference was updated 2024-10-21 UTC; exact flags can vary with the Chrome version installed on your system. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference.
Image versus PDF output
A PNG, JPEG or WebP is a raster screenshot. A PDF is a separate document export with different pagination and print behavior. Playwright CLI has a separate PDF command, and Chrome uses --print-to-pdf. Do not substitute a PDF when a single long image is required: page breaks, margins and print CSS can change the result.

Reliable capture checklist
- Set the viewport width explicitly when comparing runs.
- Wait for a page-specific readiness selector or network state.
- Dismiss consent dialogs and overlays that cover content, or hide them before capture.
- Check whether lazy images appear below the fold in the saved file.
- Disable or freeze animations when visual consistency matters.
- Use deterministic filenames and preserve exit codes in CI.
- Review very long pages for memory use and unexpected continuous scrolling.
Troubleshooting
The command says Playwright or a browser is missing
Install the Playwright package and its managed browsers for your language, then rerun the browser-install step. In containers, verify that required system libraries are present. A package installation alone does not always install executable browser binaries.
The file contains only the visible screen
For Playwright CLI, confirm that --full-page is present and that you are capturing the page opened in the current CLI session. In API code, use fullPage: true or full_page=True. Chrome’s window-size example is not equivalent.
Images or sections are blank
The site may load them only after scrolling, after a delay, or after an interaction. Wait for a selector, trigger the required interaction in code, or use a site-specific preparation routine. Inspect network and console errors; a failed resource cannot be repaired by the screenshot flag.
A cookie banner, chat box or sticky header covers content
Accept or close the banner before capture, remove the overlay with page code, or hide matching selectors. Sticky elements may repeat as the document is stitched; compare captures at several page lengths.
The page never finishes
Pages with analytics streams or long polling may never reach network idle. Wait for a concrete content selector instead, use a bounded timeout, and capture once the required content exists.

Reduce the viewport width or choose CSS-pixel scale when physical-pixel detail is unnecessary. Avoid unnecessarily huge device-pixel captures, and split an operational workflow into smaller jobs if a target page grows without bound. There is no universal page-height limit established by the cited documentation, so test the pages that matter to your workload.

Launching a fresh browser for every URL is simple but adds startup time. Reuse a browser process for batches while creating isolated pages, and close pages after each capture. Keep navigation and readiness timeouts finite so a broken site cannot stall a job indefinitely. Cache or deduplicate URLs in your own pipeline when repeated captures are unnecessary. The command-line tools themselves do not establish a universal throughput or memory benchmark; measure your page mix, viewport and image scale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a page that requires login?
Yes, but you must supply the session or authentication details through your automation code or an authorized API configuration, and protect those credentials. Public-page examples do not authenticate automatically.
Does full-page capture include content below a cookie wall?
Only if the page is prepared so that content is available. Dismiss or accept the consent interface, wait for the content to render, and inspect the resulting image.
Should I choose PNG, JPEG or WebP?
Use PNG for lossless text and UI details, JPEG for smaller photographic files, and WebP when your downstream tools support its size and quality advantages.
