To capture a webpage from top to bottom on a laptop, use your browser’s full-page screenshot feature—not the laptop’s ordinary screen-capture command. In Microsoft Edge, choose Capture full page; in Firefox, choose Save full page; in Chrome, use DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot. The steps differ by browser, and the result may vary on pages with lazy-loaded content or moving elements.

What a full-page screenshot captures

A regular screenshot records what is on the display: the whole screen, a window, or a selected region. A full-page webpage capture instead aims to include the page below the visible browser window as well. That distinction matters: Microsoft documents the Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode as screen capture, while Edge’s Screenshot feature has a separate Capture full page option for webpage capture. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide and Edge’s Screenshot feature page describe those different tasks.

If you need to show only what is currently visible, a normal screenshot or a browser’s visible-area option is appropriate. If you need one image of a page from its beginning to its end, use the browser-specific instructions below and make sure you select the full-page option.

Capture a full webpage in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the webpage you want to capture in Edge.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open Screenshot from the page’s right-click menu or Edge Settings menu.
  3. Choose Capture full page.
  4. Review the capture in the overlay, then use its copy or save option.

Microsoft describes this feature as capturing an entire webpage, including content beyond the screen. The available controls and their behavior can vary by device type, market, and browser version, so the menu may not look exactly the same for every Edge user. See Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot Tool page if you need to check the feature description.

Capture a full webpage in Firefox

  1. Open the webpage in Firefox.
  2. Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
  3. Choose Save full page.
  4. Save or copy the image using the controls shown.

Firefox also offers Save visible when you need only the currently visible portion. Choose the full-page option for content below the viewport. Mozilla documents both choices in Take screenshots in Firefox, last updated June 15, 2026.

Capture a full webpage in Google Chrome

  1. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools using the browser’s developer-tools command or menu.
  2. Turn on the device toolbar in DevTools.
  3. Open the device toolbar’s More options menu.
  4. Choose Capture a full size screenshot.

This is Chrome’s documented route for capturing a webpage beyond the visible viewport. It uses DevTools rather than a browser-facing Screenshot menu, so it involves more interface steps than the Edge and Firefox workflows above. Google’s instructions are in Simulate mobile devices with device mode.

Which method should you use?

Browser Full-page route Best fit
Microsoft Edge Screenshot → Capture full page You already use Edge and want a browser-facing capture flow.
Firefox Take Screenshot → Save full page You want to choose between a full-page capture and a visible-area capture in Firefox.
Google Chrome DevTools device toolbar → More options → Capture a full size screenshot You use Chrome and are comfortable opening DevTools.

For most people, the simplest choice is the browser already open on the page. These documented workflows establish where the full-page commands are; they do not establish that one browser produces a faster, higher-quality, more private, or more reliable capture than another. Menu wording and availability are not identical across browsers or versions.

When a laptop’s normal screenshot command is enough

Use the operating system’s screen-capture tool when you want a record of the screen as it appears now: a browser window, a selected region, or the full display. It is not a substitute for a webpage-level full capture when the page continues below the screen. In Edge, the distinction is explicit: the Snipping Tool captures the display, while the browser’s Capture full page action is for the webpage. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation also treats video capture separately from screenshot capture.

Pages that may not capture as expected

Full-page capture is not a guarantee that every element of every site will appear exactly as it does during ordinary scrolling. Some webpages load images only as a visitor approaches them, place content in independently scrolling panels, or update while the capture is underway. The browser instructions cited here do not establish uniform behavior for lazy-loaded images, embedded scroll panes, or animated media. If one of these matters, inspect the saved result rather than assuming every below-the-fold element was included.

  • Lazy-loaded sections: Content may appear only after the page is scrolled. Check the saved capture for missing images or sections.
  • Nested scroll areas: A panel inside the page can have its own scrollbar. A full-page command for the webpage may not capture that panel’s hidden contents in the way you expect.
  • Moving media or changing content: An animation or frequently updating area may be at a different state in the resulting image. Review the capture if timing or exact appearance matters.

Troubleshoot a missing or incomplete capture

The screenshot shows only the visible screen

Check that you used the explicit full-page command rather than a screen-wide, visible-area, or region capture. In Edge, select Capture full page; in Firefox, select Save full page, not Save visible; in Chrome, use Capture a full size screenshot from the device toolbar’s menu. The full-screen Snipping Tool mode is a display capture, not the Edge webpage capture feature.

The Screenshot or full-page command is missing

Confirm which browser is open, then look for its documented route: Edge’s Screenshot menu, Firefox’s Take Screenshot workflow, or Chrome DevTools’ device toolbar. In Edge, Microsoft cautions that availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. If the command still is not present, consult the browser’s current help page rather than assuming another browser’s menu labels apply.

Part of the webpage is absent or looks different

First inspect whether the missing material sits inside a nested scroll area or loads only after scrolling. Try the capture again after allowing the relevant part of the page to appear, then review the saved image. These steps may help with page-dependent content, but the cited browser documentation does not promise consistent results for lazy loading, embedded scroll panes, or moving media.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need webpage screenshots in a developer workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server: send one GET request with a URL to receive a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For an API capture, use the one-call cURL example below; replace the example URL with the page you need and supply your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and API details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

For scripting, the same endpoint can be called from Python or Node.js. These examples use the same example URL and API key placeholder; replace them as appropriate. The Python snippet writes the response body to a file. The Node.js snippet sends the request and leaves the response available for your application to handle.

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The service also supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, device presets and custom viewport sizes, dark mode, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector hiding, wait conditions, request blocking, custom headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, caching with a chosen TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API and OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can ease a switch. These are API capabilities, not additional steps required for a one-off browser screenshot.

What to choose

For a single capture on a laptop, use the full-page feature built into the browser you already have: Edge or Firefox offers a direct screenshot workflow, while Chrome’s documented option is in DevTools. Use a normal screen capture only when the visible display itself is what you need. If screenshots are part of a repeatable developer or AI-agent workflow, an API or MCP server can avoid doing each capture through the browser interface.
