You can screenshot a website in Chrome without installing anything. For a complete page, open DevTools, press Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+P (macOS), search for screenshot, and select Capture full size screenshot. Chrome saves the resulting image to your Downloads folder.

This guide explains every built-in capture mode, the exact shortcuts, and fixes for common problems. It also shows an API option when you need repeatable captures in code.

Choose the right Chrome screenshot mode

Chrome DevTools has four capture commands. Select one based on the area you need, not on image-quality differences; the referenced Chrome documentation does not make comparative quality claims.

What you need Command Result and limitation
The entire page, including content below the fold Capture full size screenshot Creates one tall image containing the page beyond the visible viewport.
Only what is currently visible Capture screenshot Saves the current viewport. Scroll to the desired position first.
One element, such as a card or table Capture node screenshot Captures the selected DOM element.
A free-form rectangle Capture area screenshot Lets you drag a region. DevTools must be docked; it does not work when DevTools is undocked.

These commands are documented in Chrome’s Device Mode guide, the DOM guide, and the Command Menu guide.

Capture a full webpage

Use this workflow for an article, landing page, documentation page, or any page that extends below the browser window.

  1. Open the URL in Google Chrome and wait for the content you want to preserve to appear.
  2. Open DevTools. Use Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Option+I on macOS. Alternatively, open Chrome’s menu and choose More Tools > Developer Tools. The official opening instructions are at Chrome for Developers.
  3. Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS.
  4. Type screenshot.
  5. Select Capture full size screenshot. Chrome renders the page beyond the current viewport and downloads the image.

The capture reflects the page’s current state. Dismiss or expand menus as needed, set the scroll position if a sticky header changes what you see, and wait for important content before running the command. Chrome’s documentation describes the commands but does not guarantee identical results for every site’s lazy-loaded or dynamically changing content.

Capture only the visible viewport

  1. Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+I (macOS).
  2. Turn on Device Mode by selecting the phone/tablet icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+M (macOS) when that shortcut is available in your Chrome build.
  3. Open the Device Mode More options menu.
  4. Choose Capture screenshot.

This saves only the emulated viewport currently shown. Resize the viewport or scroll to frame the exact section you need before capturing. Device Mode is also where Chrome documents Capture a full size screenshot for a full-page image.

Capture one element

Use a node capture when you need a product card, chart, banner, or other specific component without surrounding page content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
  2. Click the element in the DOM tree. You can also right-click the element on the page and choose Inspect.
  3. With the node selected, open the Command Menu (Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P), search screenshot, and choose Capture node screenshot.
  4. Chrome downloads an image of that node. The DOM workflow is described in Chrome’s DOM documentation.

If the wrong box is selected, inspect a parent or child node until the highlighted outline matches the content you want.

Select an arbitrary rectangular area

  1. Keep DevTools docked to the side or bottom of the browser. If it is detached into a separate window, dock it first.
  2. Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+P (macOS).
  3. Search for screenshot and choose Capture area screenshot.
  4. Drag across the page to define the rectangle, then release.

Chrome saves the selected region. The Command Menu documentation notes that area capture does not work while DevTools is undocked. Chrome describes this feature as capturing an area much like a snipping tool; see the Command Menu reference.

Keyboard shortcuts and ways to open DevTools

  • Open DevTools: Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux); Cmd+Option+I (macOS).
  • Inspect an element: Ctrl+Shift+C (Windows/Linux); Cmd+Option+C (macOS), then click the element.
  • Open the Command Menu: Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux); Cmd+Shift+P (macOS).
  • Menu path: Chrome menu > More Tools > Developer Tools.
  • Context menu: right-click a page element and choose Inspect.

Shortcuts and labels can vary with Chrome updates, operating-system keyboard settings, or managed-browser policies. If a command is not visible, open the Command Menu and search exactly for screenshot. Chrome’s shortcut and opening guidance is maintained at Open Chrome DevTools.

Prepare the page for a reliable capture

Set the intended visual state

  • Close cookie notices, newsletter dialogs, chat bubbles, and other overlays if they should not appear.
  • Expand accordions or menus that must be included; collapse distracting sections.
  • Choose the desired light or dark theme and viewport width.
  • Scroll to the position needed for a viewport or area capture.

Wait for dynamic content

Images loaded only after scrolling, animated components, advertisements, and client-rendered text may change while Chrome is capturing. Wait until the important content is visible. For a full-page shot, verify that lower sections have loaded; the documentation does not promise that every lazy-loading implementation will render identically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the output

Open the downloaded file and inspect the top, bottom, and any interactive sections. Extremely long pages can produce very tall images that are awkward to share; use viewport, element, or area capture when a focused image is more useful.

Troubleshooting

“Capture full size screenshot” is missing

Open Device Mode and its More options menu, or use the Command Menu and search screenshot. Menu locations can move between Chrome versions. Confirm that DevTools is open for the page you are capturing.

Area capture does nothing

Dock DevTools. Chrome specifically documents that Capture area screenshot does not work when DevTools is undocked.

The screenshot contains a popup or cookie banner

Return to the page, close or accept the overlay, wait for the layout to settle, and run the command again. DevTools captures the current rendered state; it does not automatically clean page overlays.

Images or text are missing below the fold

Wait for network activity to finish and scroll through the page once to trigger lazy loading, then capture again. A site’s scripts may also replace content while the capture is running, so a second attempt after the page settles can help.

The element capture includes unexpected whitespace

Inspect the DOM and select the element whose bounding box matches the visible component. Padding, margins, pseudo-elements, or a parent container can make the selected node larger than expected.

For automated, repeatable captures, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.

Here is a complete cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

You can request full-page or element captures, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, custom CSS/JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk requests for up to 100 URLs, PDF settings, and usage data. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—let Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client request captures directly.

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Chrome require an extension for these screenshots?

No. The commands are part of Chrome DevTools, which is built into the browser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I capture a page that requires scrolling?

Yes. Use Capture full size screenshot; it is designed to include content outside the visible viewport.

Can I use these commands in an incognito window?

DevTools can generally be opened in an incognito tab, but extensions, site permissions, authentication state, and organization policies can change what the page renders. Verify the resulting image rather than assuming the two modes are identical.
