If emojis are blank squares, missing, or unexpectedly monochrome in a headless Chrome screenshot, fix the rendering environment rather than the screenshot flag: install an emoji-capable font in the Linux runner, verify fontconfig fallback, restart Chrome, and test the exact emoji sequence in that same environment. Headless Chrome captures whatever its text renderer can resolve; it does not install fonts or supply missing glyphs.
Why headless Chrome screenshots lose emojis
A screenshot is the final image produced by the browser’s rendering pipeline. Chrome first maps each Unicode code point to a glyph from the page’s requested font or a system fallback. If the runner has no suitable emoji font, the result can be an empty box ( tofu ), a missing glyph, or a monochrome symbol. Changing --headless, --screenshot, or the viewport does not add font coverage.
The problem is especially common in Linux containers and minimal CI images. Your laptop may have several commercial or platform fonts while the container launching Chromium has only a small sans-serif set. A headed browser on your workstation therefore is not a valid comparison unless it runs in the same operating-system image, browser build, font set, and fontconfig configuration as the screenshot job.
Emoji sequences also vary in complexity. A single character such as 😀 may render while a sequence that combines a base character, variation selector, skin-tone modifier, or zero-width joiner does not. Test the exact string used by the page.

Start with an environment inventory
Record the environment that actually starts Chrome. Keep these values with your CI job or container image so a later image update does not silently change font behavior.
- Operating system and distribution release (the evidence for this failure mode is strongest on Linux).
- Chrome or Chromium version and whether it is the system browser, a bundled binary, or a Playwright/Puppeteer download.
- Container or virtual-machine image digest, if applicable.
- Installed emoji-capable fonts and their versions.
- Fontconfig configuration and cache state.
- The precise emoji sequence, including variation selectors and joiners.
Do not assume that a headed test and a headless test share fonts. Launch both from the same image and with the same browser binary when comparing results.
Install an emoji-capable font on Linux
Ubuntu and Debian-based images
An Ubuntu Server community workaround for missing non-Latin characters names the fonts-noto package. It is a user-reported remedy from 2019, not a current universal Ubuntu prescription, so check that the package exists and is appropriate for your distribution image before baking it into a build. The same report mentions fonts-indic and fonts-noto-cjk for additional script coverage; those packages are relevant to Indic or CJK text, not automatically required for emoji.
apt-get update
apt-get install -y fonts-noto
# Add only when your page needs these scripts:
# apt-get install -y fonts-indic fonts-noto-cjk
Use the package manager and package names documented by the exact distribution release in your image. After installation, rebuild or refresh the fontconfig cache if your image process normally does so, then restart every Chrome process. A browser that was already running can retain its earlier font view.

Do not solve this by replacing every font
Chromium implementation history describes Linux fallback behavior involving the und-Zsye locale and the special emoji family. That history explains why fontconfig ordering matters, but it is not a guarantee that a particular configuration is correct for your current Chromium build. A broad rule that prepends an emoji font to all text can change ordinary Latin and symbol rendering. Prefer a targeted, distribution-supported fallback configuration and verify normal text as well as emoji.
Verify fallback before taking a full screenshot
Use a minimal diagnostic page
Create a page that contains the exact production strings plus a few controls: a basic emoji, a sequence with a variation selector, a skin-tone sequence, a family or profession joined with zero-width joiners, and nearby Latin, Arabic, Indic, or CJK text if your application uses them.
<!doctype html>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<style>
body { font: 32px sans-serif; }
.emoji { font-family: system-ui, sans-serif; }
</style>
<p class="emoji">😀 ❤️ 👍🏽 👨👩👧👦 🧑💻</p>
<p>Latin العربية हिन्दी 中文</p>
Serve this file from the same container and origin policy used by the real capture. A plain page removes application JavaScript, lazy loading, and CSS timing from the diagnosis.
Capture with the Chrome command line
Chrome’s documented screenshot mode captures a rendered page; it does not install fonts. A minimal command is:
chromium --headless --disable-gpu
--window-size=1280,800
--screenshot=/tmp/emoji.png
http://127.0.0.1:8000/emoji-test.html
Use the binary and flags approved by your distribution and Chrome version. The important diagnostic property is that this command runs in the same environment as the failing job.

Compare headed and headless runs correctly
If the headed result works, do not conclude that headless Chrome is broken. First confirm that both modes use the same binary, user-data directory policy, environment variables, fonts, fontconfig cache, and page URL. A successful headed run on a developer workstation only proves that workstation has a working fallback.
Inspect fontconfig and browser state
If the font package is present but the screenshot is still wrong, inspect what the runner can actually see:
Recommended Free Tools
- List installed fonts with the fontconfig utility available in your image (commonly
fc-list) and look for the installed emoji family. - Check the fontconfig configuration and cache used by the service account that launches Chrome, not just your interactive shell.
- Confirm that the container’s font directories are readable by that account.
- Remove stale test containers or rebuild the image after package changes.
- Restart Chrome after every font or fallback change.
Chromium once documented inconsistent Linux fallback in which contour fonts such as DejaVu Sans and Noto Sans Symbols2 were selected for some emoji even when a dedicated color font such as Noto Color Emoji was installed. Treat that as implementation history: current releases can differ, and the reliable test is the actual browser build in your runner.
Color emoji versus monochrome output
“Rendering” and “rendering in color” are separate questions. A monochrome glyph is evidence that Chrome found a symbol font, not necessarily that the character is missing. Platform defaults have changed over time; historical Chromium notes mention Apple Color Emoji on macOS, Segoe UI Symbol on Windows, Times New Roman on Linux, and Noto Color Emoji on ChromeOS for one older pictograph feature. Those mappings are implementation details, not a current universal font table.
For a reproducible service, decide what acceptance means: a visible glyph, a color glyph, or a particular design. Test screenshots at the same scale and format, because resizing and image viewers can make small color differences appear monochrome. Do not substitute a platform-specific font name in CSS unless you control every target platform.

Handle timing, CSS, and content issues after fonts are fixed
Wait for the page to finish rendering
A screenshot taken before web fonts, JavaScript-generated text, or hydration completes can look like a font failure. Wait for a reliable application selector, a bounded delay, or network idle according to your page’s behavior. Avoid an unlimited network-idle wait on pages with analytics or streaming requests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the actual text and encoding
- Send and declare UTF-8: include
<meta charset="utf-8">and verify the response header. - Inspect the DOM text for replacement characters or escaped data that never became Unicode.
- Check CSS
font-family,font-weight, andfont-feature-settings; an unexpected web font can mask the system fallback. - Ensure an overlay, clipping container, or transparent text color is not hiding a valid glyph.
Test sequences, not just code points
Capture each production sequence exactly. A family emoji and a single smiling face exercise different fallback and shaping paths. The available evidence does not establish universal coverage for every sequence, so record pass/fail results for the strings your product actually displays.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Empty square or tofu | No suitable glyph in the runner’s fonts | Install a maintained emoji-capable package, refresh fontconfig, restart Chrome, and retest. |
| Emoji appears as a plain outline | Fallback selected a contour/symbol font | Inspect fallback ordering; use a targeted emoji preference rather than replacing all system fonts. |
| Works locally, fails in CI | Different OS image, browser, account, or font cache | Inventory both environments and reproduce in the CI image. |
| Basic emoji works, family or skin-tone sequence fails | Sequence-specific shaping or coverage | Test the exact sequence and verify variation selectors and joiners are preserved. |
| Only the application page fails | Early capture, web-font race, CSS, or DOM encoding | Use the minimal diagnostic page, then add explicit readiness checks and inspect computed styles. |
| Change has no effect | Old Chrome process or stale image/cache | Kill the browser, rebuild the image, refresh fontconfig, and run a clean capture. |
Make the fix reliable in CI and containers
- Pin the base image and browser version, while planning controlled updates because Chromium’s fallback behavior evolves.
- Install fonts during image build, not interactively at runtime.
- Run a small emoji smoke test on every image or browser upgrade.
- Store the diagnostic screenshot and environment inventory when the test fails.
- Use the same service account and locale in tests and production.
- Keep font packages separate from application assets so security and license updates are manageable.
There is no evidence-based percentage for how often this failure occurs or a universal package set that fixes every Linux distribution. Treat the remedy as environment-specific and verify it after each image change.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so your application does not need to maintain a browser image and font configuration. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
Example using cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The service also exposes an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Options include full-page lazy-image capture, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous signed webhooks, 100-URL bulk calls, usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. FAQ
Will adding --disable-gpu fix missing emoji?
No. That flag changes graphics behavior; it does not install a font or correct fallback. Fix the runner’s font availability and configuration first.
Should I hard-code Noto Color Emoji in every CSS rule?
Only if you control the target environment and have verified the font’s coverage and licensing. A system-level, targeted fallback is safer for mixed scripts and multiple platforms.
Why is a screenshot valid but different from my browser?
Different fonts, browser builds, device scale factors, or emoji designs can all produce valid but different pixels. Compare the complete rendering environment, not just the URL.
