For a webpage in Windows, the quickest supported method is Microsoft Edge: open the page, press Ctrl+Shift+S, choose Capture full page, review the result, then save or copy it. This captures content below the visible viewport, not just what is currently on screen. Windows Snipping Tool can capture the full screen, but Microsoft’s documented Snipping Tool modes do not include a stitched, scrolling webpage capture.
First decide what you need to capture
“Full-page screenshot” can mean three different jobs. Choosing the right one prevents a disappointing result.
| Capture job | What you get | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Entire webpage | A single image containing content below the current browser viewport | Edge’s Capture full page command |
| Visible Windows desktop | Exactly what is displayed on one or more screens | Snipping Tool’s full-screen snip |
| Scrolling content in a desktop application | A stitched capture of a long document, PDF, or app window | A specialist scrolling-capture utility, if the application is supported |
| Printable document | A PDF laid out for reading or printing, rather than an image screenshot | The browser’s print-to-PDF command |
A browser page and a scrolling desktop window are not interchangeable. Use the browser’s own whole-page feature whenever the target is a website; use a specialist utility only when the content is outside the browser or the browser cannot produce the result you need.
Take a full webpage screenshot in Microsoft Edge
Edge provides the clearest built-in workflow documented by Microsoft. It captures the page, including material that would normally require scrolling.

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Open the webpage in Edge. Wait for the page’s important content to finish loading. If a sign-in, cookie dialog, or consent prompt is covering the page, deal with it first so the capture reflects the state you want to preserve.
- Open the Screenshot tool. Press Ctrl+Shift+S. Keyboard shortcuts and labels can change between Edge releases; if the shortcut does nothing, open Edge’s menu and locate the current Screenshot command.
- Select Capture full page. Do not choose a region or visible-screen option. The full-page command scrolls through the webpage and creates one capture containing content below the viewport.
- Inspect the result. Scroll through the preview to check that headers, images, menus, and the page footer are present. Very dynamic pages can change while they are being captured.
- Mark up, copy, or save. Edge’s Screenshot interface supports drawing or other markup before you copy or save the image. Use copy when you need to paste it into an email or document; use save when you need a file for archiving or upload.
If your Edge installation shows a different label, use the Screenshot command visible in that version and look for the option that explicitly says full page. The exact interface is version-dependent.
What Snipping Tool can—and cannot—do
Snipping Tool is the built-in Windows choice for ordinary screen captures. It offers rectangular, free-form, window, and full-screen snips, and it also supports video snips. A full-screen snip records the desktop as displayed at that moment.
That is different from a scrolling webpage capture. Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool instructions describe full-screen and other screen regions, but do not document a mode that automatically scrolls a long webpage and stitches the sections together. If you select the full screen, you get the visible screen—not the rest of a page below it.
- Use Snipping Tool when you need a dialog box, application window, desktop state, or one visible screen.
- Use Edge’s full-page Screenshot command when you need the entire webpage.
- Use specialist software when the target is a long document or scrolling application window that is not handled by the browser.
Firefox and Chrome alternatives
Other browsers have their own routes, but their menus and shortcuts change more often than Edge’s documented path. Verify the command in the browser version installed on your PC before relying on an exact sequence.

Firefox
Firefox has offered a page-capture command with a Save full page choice. Open the page-capture tool from the browser menu or toolbar, choose the full-page option, review the preview, and save or copy it. If you only see a visible-area or selection command, update Firefox or check the current toolbar configuration.
Google Chrome
Chrome can capture a whole page through developer tools, and a print-to-PDF workflow can preserve the page as a document. Extensions are another route, but they add permissions and can behave differently on pages with frames, lazy-loaded images, or restrictive security policies. Because Chrome’s developer-tools labels and extension behavior are version-specific, treat instructions written for older releases as guidance rather than a guarantee of the current interface.
A PDF made through Print is not an image screenshot. It is often better for reading, searching, or printing, while a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image is better for annotations, visual review, and embedding in a ticket.
Capturing a scrolling window outside a browser
If the target is a PDF viewer, document editor, chat transcript, or another long application window, a browser feature may not help. A specialist utility such as PicPick has a Scrolling Window capture workflow according to secondary how-to coverage. Treat this as optional software, confirm that the current version supports your particular application, and test a short document first.

Scrolling utilities can fail when an app uses custom-rendered controls, nested scrollbars, hardware-accelerated canvases, or content that changes while the tool is stitching frames. If the result repeats lines, misses sections, or stops early, try the application’s export or print function instead, or capture smaller sections and assemble them manually.
Improve reliability and image quality
Prepare the page
- Close menus, tooltips, chat bubbles, and transient notifications that you do not want in the final image.
- Use a stable window size and zoom level. Responsive layouts can rearrange content when the viewport changes.
- Wait for fonts, hero images, and lazy-loaded sections to appear before starting the capture.
- For pages behind a login, sign in in the same browser profile that you use for the capture.
Check long or dynamic pages
Infinite-scroll feeds, animated carousels, live dashboards, and pages that replace content as you scroll are difficult to represent in one static image. Stop auto-refreshing features where possible, then inspect the capture from top to bottom. A page that loads additional items only after a user gesture may not include those items unless you trigger the gesture first.
Choose an output deliberately
- PNG: useful for text, interface screenshots, and lossless annotations.
- JPEG: smaller files for photographic pages, with some compression.
- WebP: compact modern image format when the destination accepts it.
- PDF: a document workflow, not a single raster image; use it when search, printing, or selectable text matters more than pixel-level fidelity.
Troubleshooting full-page captures
The shortcut does nothing
Open Edge’s menu and find the current Screenshot command. Keyboard shortcuts can be changed or unavailable in managed environments, and the command name can move between releases. If an administrator has disabled the feature, you may need an approved browser or capture utility.
The capture contains only the visible screen
You selected a screen or region snip instead of Capture full page. Restart the Edge Screenshot tool and choose the explicit full-page option. Snipping Tool’s full-screen mode will not add content below the viewport.

Images or sections are missing
Scroll through the page once before capturing to trigger lazy loading, wait for network activity to settle, and try again. Expand accordions that must appear in the final image. If the page is personalized or continuously changing, capture a stable state or save the source as a PDF when an image is not essential.
The result has duplicated or misaligned areas
Fixed headers, sticky sidebars, animated elements, and nested scroll regions can confuse stitching. Temporarily collapse sticky controls, pause animations if the site offers that control, or capture the affected sections separately.
The file is too large to send
Save a PNG for clarity, then resize or convert a copy to JPEG or WebP for sharing. Keep the original so text and fine details are not lost through repeated recompression.
You need a long desktop-app capture
Use a scrolling-window utility that explicitly supports the application, or export/print from the application itself. A browser full-page command is designed for webpage content, not every Windows window.
Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
If you need repeatable captures in a script, build pipeline, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo is the first screenshot API to try: it removes common page clutter before capture, bills only clean results, and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots.

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts a URL and access key; the response identifies the page result and billing outcome with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing.

Options relevant to a full-page workflow
- Full-page capture with lazy images loaded, or one element selected by CSS selector.
- Dark mode, 12 device presets, arbitrary viewport sizes, and retina scale.
- PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output; PDF paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges.
- Custom CSS and JavaScript, a click before capture, hidden selectors, and waits for a selector, delay, or network idle.
- Blocking for ads, trackers, selected requests, or resource types.
- Custom headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation.
- Transparent background, image resizing, and caching with a TTL you choose.
- Signed links for public
<img>tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. - Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration changes.
Why the output is cleaner
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be disabled. This is useful for documentation and monitoring, where an overlay can hide the page you actually want to record.

Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can request captures without a hand-operated browser.
For occasional manual captures, Edge is simpler. For scheduled jobs, many URLs, consistent cleanup, or agent-driven work, use the API. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
A practical choice checklist
- One webpage, no installation: Edge → Screenshot → Capture full page.
- Only what is visible on the desktop: Snipping Tool → Full screen.
- Firefox or Chrome: use the browser’s current full-page command, checking labels for your version.
- Long content in another Windows app: use an application export or a compatible scrolling-window utility.
- Automated, repeatable, or multi-URL captures: call ScreenshotNeo and inspect its verdict and billing headers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a full-page screenshot include content hidden behind a collapsed accordion?
No. Expand the section before capture if you need its text or images in the result.
Can I capture a page that requires a login?
Yes, when using a browser you are already signed into. For automated work, provide the service’s supported authentication headers or cookies rather than publishing credentials in code.
Is print-to-PDF the same as a scrolling screenshot?
No. Print-to-PDF creates a document intended for reading or printing; a scrolling screenshot creates an image of the rendered page.
