Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo convert HTML to an image in Symfony, render the markup in a browser-capable engine rather than Symfony’s template system alone. Use Symfony Panther when you need screenshots during end-to-end tests, Spatie Browsershot when your application must render a URL, HTML string, or local file through headless Chrome, and KnpLabs Snappy when wkhtmltoimage is an acceptable external renderer. The right choice depends on JavaScript needs, deployment access to browsers or binaries, and whether the HTML is trusted.
Choose the rendering path first
HTML is a document description, not an image format. A renderer must calculate styles, load fonts and assets, execute any required JavaScript, and then capture pixels. In Symfony, the practical choices are:
| Option | Best fit | Rendering model | Important requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Symfony Panther | Browser screenshots in end-to-end tests | Real Chrome or Firefox controlled through WebDriver | PHP package, browser, and compatible WebDriver; configurable browser dimensions |
| Spatie Browsershot | Reusable application feature that turns a URL or HTML into an image | Puppeteer controlling headless Chrome | PHP, Node/Puppeteer, and a usable Chrome/Chromium installation; verify current package requirements |
| KnpLabs Snappy | Projects that can run wkhtmltoimage | PHP wrapper around an external wkhtmltox binary | Installed wkhtmltoimage binary and Symfony bundle configuration; test its behavior with your pages |
There is no controlled benchmark in the cited documentation that proves one is universally faster or more faithful. Validate output, memory use, concurrency, and startup time on your own deployment.
Option 1: Capture a page with Symfony Panther in an end-to-end test
Panther is documented by Symfony as a real-browser end-to-end testing component. It can execute JavaScript and take a screenshot at any point in a test, making it the natural solution for test artifacts such as a checkout page after validation.

Install Panther
- From the Symfony project directory, run
composer require --dev symfony/panther. - Install and expose a supported Chrome or Firefox browser and its WebDriver according to the current Symfony documentation.
- Ensure the CI image has the same browser, driver, fonts, and asset access as the environment where the test is expected to pass.
Write a screenshot test
The following PHPUnit test navigates to a route, waits for a visible element, and saves a PNG. Adjust the route and selector to your application.
<?php
namespace AppTestsEndToEnd;
use SymfonyComponentPantherPantherTestCase;
final class CheckoutScreenshotTest extends PantherTestCase
{
public function testCheckoutState(): void
{
$client = static::createPantherClient();
$client->request('GET', '/checkout');
$client->waitFor('#order-summary');
$client->takeScreenshot('var/screenshots/checkout.png');
self::assertSelectorExists('#order-summary');
}
}
Panther’s screenshot dimensions follow the browser window configuration. Set a deterministic viewport in your Panther setup when pixel-for-pixel comparison matters, and keep fonts and device scale consistent between local and CI runs. Confirm whether the capture should include only the viewport or a full page with the version of Panther and browser you install.
When Panther is the wrong production tool
Symfony’s guide frames Panther around end-to-end testing. Do not treat that documentation as a production image-service recommendation. For an HTTP endpoint, queue worker, invoice renderer, or user-uploaded HTML feature, Browsershot or Snappy provides a more direct application integration.
Option 2: Render HTML or a URL with Spatie Browsershot
Browsershot exposes a PHP API for converting a webpage to an image or PDF while Puppeteer drives headless Chrome. Its documented inputs include a URL, an HTML string, and a local HTML file. This is usually the clearest path when Symfony code itself owns the rendering request.
Install and verify the runtime
Install the package with Composer and follow its current setup instructions for Node, Puppeteer, and Chrome/Chromium. Packagist listed Browsershot 5.4.0 on 2026-05-26 with PHP ^8.2 and Symfony Process ^6.0|^7.0|^8.0 requirements at that time; check the package metadata before pinning a version because requirements change.
composer require spatie/browsershot
In a container or CI runner, install the browser and all required system libraries, then verify the executable is available to the user running PHP. Keep the Node and browser versions fixed in deployment rather than relying on an unpinned global installation.

Render a Twig-generated HTML string
Render the template first, then pass the resulting string to Browsershot. This keeps business data in Symfony while letting Chrome perform layout and JavaScript work.
<?php
namespace AppService;
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
use TwigEnvironment;
final class CardImageRenderer
{
public function __construct(private Environment $twig) {}
public function render(array $data, string $outputPath): void
{
$html = $this->twig->render('card/image.html.twig', $data);
Browsershot::html($html)
->windowSize(1200, 630)
->setScreenshotType('png')
->save($outputPath);
}
}
Make relative CSS, images, and fonts resolvable from the renderer’s working context. Prefer absolute, authenticated URLs or a controlled local asset directory. If your template depends on JavaScript, wait for the page state your application considers complete before saving; otherwise the capture can occur before charts, web fonts, or lazy content appear.
Render a public URL or local file
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
Browsershot::url('https://example.com/report')
->windowSize(1440, 900)
->save(storage_path('app/reports/report.png'));
Browsershot::url(storage_path('app/render/report.html'))
->save(storage_path('app/reports/report-file.png'));
Use the Browsershot methods documented for your installed release for full-page capture, delays, waiting for selectors, custom CSS, cookies, headers, and other Chromium controls. Treat every option as version-sensitive and test it after upgrades.
Production design considerations
- Queue heavy jobs: browser startup consumes CPU and memory; a Symfony Messenger worker avoids tying up a web request.
- Control concurrency: limit simultaneous Chromium processes and set request timeouts so a stalled remote asset cannot exhaust workers.
- Make output reproducible: pin browser versions, install the same fonts in every environment, and use fixed viewport dimensions.
- Protect secrets: do not place private tokens in HTML, URLs, logs, or screenshot filenames. Use narrowly scoped headers or cookies and remove them after rendering.
- Restrict navigation: if users can submit HTML or URLs, isolate the renderer and block access to internal network services and sensitive local files.
Option 3: Use KnpLabs Snappy and wkhtmltoimage
KnpLabs Snappy is a PHP wrapper for wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage, and knplabs/knp-snappy-bundle provides Symfony integration. Choose it only when wkhtmltoimage’s rendering behavior meets your pages and your host can install and maintain the external binary.
Install and configure the binary
Install a wkhtmltox build appropriate for your operating system, then configure the Symfony bundle with the absolute path to wkhtmltoimage. The exact package and configuration keys vary by distribution and bundle release, so use the current Snappy and bundle documentation rather than copying a path from another server.
Generate an image
use KnpSnappyImage;
final class LegacyImageRenderer
{
public function __construct(private Image $snappy) {}
public function render(string $htmlFile, string $outputPath): void
{
$this->snappy->generate($htmlFile, $outputPath, [
'width' => 1200,
'format' => 'png',
]);
}
}
Snappy’s maintainers warn that --enable-local-file-access can expose local files or enable remote code execution when untrusted HTML or JavaScript is rendered. Do not enable broad local-file access casually. Sanitize input, isolate the process, use a restrictive filesystem, and allow only the assets the document genuinely needs.

How to choose between Panther, Browsershot, and Snappy
Choose Panther when the image is a test artifact
Use Panther if your requirement is “capture what the browser displayed during this end-to-end test.” You get JavaScript execution and browser-level assertions in one test flow. Keep it in the development/test dependency set unless you have a separately justified production architecture.
Choose Browsershot when the image is an application output
Use Browsershot for social cards, reports, certificates, or an endpoint that accepts HTML and returns an image. It handles URL, string, and local-file input through headless Chrome, so modern browser behavior and JavaScript are available. Budget for Node, Puppeteer, Chrome, fonts, sandboxing, and process supervision.
Choose Snappy when an external binary is the constraint
Use Snappy when your deployment already supports wkhtmltoimage and your pages do not require behavior that the chosen wkhtmltoimage build cannot reproduce. Validate CSS, JavaScript, fonts, SVG, and remote assets with representative documents before committing to it.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Call the API with one GET request (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page and element captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, HTML/CSS input, custom JavaScript and CSS, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

Troubleshooting Symfony HTML-to-image jobs
The screenshot is blank or missing dynamic content
The capture likely occurred before JavaScript finished, a selector appeared, or network requests completed. Add a documented selector wait or delay in the selected tool, inspect browser logs, and verify that the renderer can reach every API and asset URL.
Fonts or images differ between local and production
Install the same font files in the runtime image, use stable asset URLs, and wait for web fonts and lazy images before capture. A browser running in CI does not automatically have the fonts installed on a developer workstation.
Chrome or WebDriver cannot start
Check browser/driver compatibility, executable paths, Linux shared-library dependencies, user permissions, and container sandbox settings. Run the browser as the same operating-system user as PHP and print the resolved binary path in diagnostics.
Relative URLs fail for an HTML string
An HTML fragment has no dependable document base URL. Convert asset links to absolute URLs or provide a controlled base document and ensure the renderer can access it.
Snappy exposes local files or cannot load assets
Do not solve this by enabling unrestricted local-file access. Remove that flag for untrusted input, copy only approved assets into an isolated directory, and apply filesystem and network restrictions around wkhtmltoimage.
