The reliable method depends on whether you control the website. For your own site, open Google Analytics 4 and use Reports → Realtime pages for the last 30 minutes, or a standard report for a selected historical period. For a site you do not control, use Similarweb’s Website Traffic Checker and label the result as an estimate. Public tools cannot see another site’s private analytics counter.

Choose the right method first

Situation Best source What you get How to describe it
You own or administer the site Google Analytics 4 (GA4) First-party page views, users and other events recorded by your property Measured data for the configured property
You need a live diagnostic GA4 Realtime pages Views and active users during the last 30 minutes Realtime window, not a monthly total
You are checking another domain Similarweb Website Traffic Checker Modeled traffic, rankings, keywords, referring domains and technologies Estimate; include its period and scope
You need repeatable competitor data Similarweb Page Views API Estimated daily, weekly, monthly or last-28-days page views API estimate; note filters and credit use

Do not substitute one metric for another. A pageview is a request to load or reload one page. Visits or sessions group activity into visits, while active users or unique visitors represent people or devices according to the platform’s measurement rules. One person can create multiple pageviews, and a refresh can create another pageview in the same visit.

Check views on a website you own with GA4

See the current 30-minute window

  1. Sign in to Google Analytics.
  2. Open Reports.
  3. Select Realtime pages.
  4. Read the key metrics card and the page-path table.

Google describes this report as showing the pages users are currently viewing and the number of users viewing each page in realtime. The key metrics card shows total views and active users received in the last 30 minutes; the table breaks pages out by views and active users.

Use this screen to confirm that a new article, campaign or release is receiving traffic right now. It is not a substitute for a historical report: a quiet 30-minute interval does not mean the page has few monthly views.

Get historical page views

For a day, week, month or custom period, open the standard GA4 report that contains your page and screen data, then set the date range before reading the page-view metric. Keep the same date range, property, timezone and page definition whenever you compare periods. If you change from a page path to a full URL, or from one data stream to another, the totals are no longer directly comparable.

Read the page-level result correctly

  • Views/pageviews: loading or reloading a page can add another view.
  • Active users: users active under GA4’s measurement rules; this is not a count of every page load.
  • Sessions: visits, which can contain several pageviews.

Record the exact metric name shown in GA4 rather than writing a vague “views” number. Also record whether you filtered to a page path, a title, a hostname, a country or another dimension.

Estimate a competitor’s views with Similarweb

Use the public checker

  1. Open Similarweb’s Website Traffic Checker.
  2. Enter the domain. Do not expect a private analytics login to be required.
  3. Choose the correct domain and select Analyze traffic.
  4. Write down the analysis period, country, device coverage and whether subdomains are included.

The checker can return traffic statistics, rankings, SEO keywords, referring domains and website technologies. Similarweb combines direct measurement, a contributory network, partnerships and public-data extraction. Because the result is modeled, treat it as directional evidence for comparing scale or trends—not as the site owner’s exact counter.

Understand the estimate’s scope

A number can change materially when you change geography, desktop/mobile coverage, date range or domain scope. A result for example.com may not include blog.example.com unless the interface says it does. A country-specific estimate is not a global total. Put those qualifiers beside the number whenever you save it.

Use the result for comparisons, not false precision

Similarweb is useful for questions such as “Which of these domains appears larger?” or “Did estimated traffic rise during this period?” It cannot establish an exact number of page loads for a competitor. A public result without a verification indicator should be treated as an estimate.

Automate estimates with the Similarweb Page Views API

Similarweb’s Page Views API supports daily, weekly, monthly and last-28-days retrieval. The reference also supports date ranges, country filters, an optional main-domain-only scope and an option to show shared Google Analytics data. You need an API key, and requests may consume credits.

For a repeatable report, store the request date, domain, endpoint version, period, country, device scope, main-domain setting and whether shared Analytics data was requested. Keep those fields with the returned value so a later reader can reproduce the comparison. Do not present an API estimate as first-party measurement unless the response explicitly identifies verified, shared Google Analytics data.

How to report a view count without misleading readers

Every published number should answer these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Source: GA4, Similarweb checker or Similarweb API.
  • Metric: pageviews, visits/sessions or active users.
  • Period: exact dates, or “last 30 minutes” for Realtime pages.
  • Geography: worldwide or named countries.
  • Devices: all devices, desktop, mobile or another scope.
  • Domain scope: main domain, subdomain or both.
  • Status: first-party measurement, modeled estimate or verified shared Analytics data.

A clear sentence might read: “Similarweb estimates 120,000 monthly pageviews for the main domain worldwide during the selected period; this is not a first-party counter.” For your own property, identify the GA4 property and date range instead.

Verification, privacy and practical limits

First-party data is authoritative only for the configured property

GA4 measures what your implementation sends to that property. Missing tags, consent choices, filters, duplicate events or a page on a different hostname can make the reported total differ from server logs or another analytics product. When totals matter, document the implementation and compare the same definition each time.

Verified sharing changes the confidence level

A site owner can connect Google Analytics to Similarweb privately for benchmarking or publicly to display verified traffic and engagement data. Similarweb notes that synchronization can take up to 48 hours. Until a verification indicator is present, use the public number as a modeled estimate.

Do not infer people from pageviews

Reloads, multiple tabs and several pages in one visit can all increase pageviews without increasing the number of people. Conversely, a blocked script or consent choice can prevent an analytics event from being recorded even when a page loaded. Always name the metric you actually measured.

Common problems and fixes

“Realtime pages” is empty

Confirm that you opened the intended GA4 property and that the page is sending data to that property. Visit the page yourself, allow the measurement choice required by your implementation, wait briefly and refresh the report. If data still does not appear, inspect the tag configuration and stream settings rather than treating the empty card as zero traffic.

The number is lower than server logs

Check whether consent controls, ad blockers, tag failures, internal-traffic filters or different time zones explain the gap. Server requests and analytics pageviews are different measurements; do not merge them without defining which one the report uses.

Similarweb shows no result or a wide range

Try the exact registered domain, check whether the property is too small for a stable public estimate, and verify the selected country, device and date range. Save the date you checked because modeled values can change as the provider updates its data.

A competitor claims a much larger number

Ask whether the claim is pageviews, sessions, users, unique devices or a verified Analytics figure. Compare the same period, geography, device mix and subdomain scope before drawing a conclusion.

The API request consumes credits unexpectedly

Review the requested granularity, date range and filters, then cache results in your own reporting system. Request only the periods and countries required for the decision, and keep the API response metadata with the stored estimate.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is useful when you need a dated visual record of a public traffic result or a shareable report page; it does not calculate pageviews itself. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF screenshot. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A cURL capture looks like this:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

For AI-assisted workflows, ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Can I prove a competitor’s exact monthly views?

Not from a public checker alone. Only the owner’s instrumented analytics or an explicitly verified shared dataset can provide first-party evidence.

Why should I save the country and device settings?

Those filters define the population behind the estimate. Changing them changes the number, so a later comparison is meaningful only when the settings match.

Is a screenshot of a traffic report evidence of the underlying data?

It preserves what the report displayed at capture time, but it does not turn a modeled estimate into first-party measurement. Keep the source, period and scope alongside the image.
