To change a screenshot’s pixel width and height, resize the saved image in an editor: open its resize or image-size controls, enter the target dimensions, and keep the aspect ratio locked unless you intend to stretch the image. Save a copy and verify its exported dimensions. If you have not captured the screenshot yet and need a precise output size, set the capture viewport or resize the resulting image afterward.
Resize, crop, or change the capture size?
These operations solve different problems:
- Resize changes the number of pixels in the image. Resampling creates or removes pixel data to produce the new dimensions.
- Crop removes part of the image. It changes what is visible and may change the aspect ratio, but it does not necessarily scale the remaining content to an exact pixel size.
- Change capture size sets the viewport or capture region before taking a new screenshot. This is preferable when you need a particular webpage layout or want to avoid enlarging a small original.
For an undistorted result, preserve the aspect ratio. If the target width and height have a different ratio from the original, either crop to the new shape, add empty canvas around the image, or deliberately stretch it. Stretching makes text and interface elements look wider or taller.
Windows: use Paint after capturing
Snipping Tool captures and annotates the screen; Paint provides a straightforward way to enter new pixel dimensions. Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to capture words or images from all or part of a PC screen in its Snipping Tool guide.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S, then capture the desired area.
- Open the capture in Snipping Tool.
- Choose Edit > Edit with Paint.
- In Paint, open Resize. Choose pixels, enter the width or height, and leave Maintain aspect ratio enabled for an undistorted image. The other dimension updates to preserve the original proportions.
- Save a new copy in the format you need, such as PNG or JPEG. Keep the original if you may need to revise it.
If the image must be exactly a specified width and height that do not share its original proportions, first decide whether to crop, pad the canvas, or distort. A locked resize cannot produce both unrelated dimensions without changing the content or canvas.

Mac: resize with Preview
Preview has a direct image-dimension workflow. Apple’s Preview instructions note that changing either width or height updates the other value when proportional scaling is enabled.
- Open the screenshot in Preview.
- Click Show Markup Toolbar.
- Choose Adjust Size.
- Enter the desired width and height, or choose a size from Fit into. Keep Scale proportionally selected unless you intentionally want to change the image’s shape.
- Leave Resample image enabled when the goal is new pixel dimensions. Deselecting it is for changing dimensions without resampling pixel detail, not for producing a different pixel count.
- Use File > Export or save a copy so the source remains unchanged.
For a fixed target box that has a different shape, proportional scaling may leave one dimension short of the target. Crop or extend the canvas separately if both the exact dimensions and undistorted content matter.
Android: crop in Photos or Gallery; use a resizer for exact pixels
Android’s screenshot and editing controls vary by manufacturer, Android version, and app. On many devices a screenshot appears in Google Photos or the manufacturer’s Gallery app. Google Photos documents crop and aspect-ratio editing, but its standard crop workflow is not a universal arbitrary-pixel resize dialog.
- Capture with Power + Volume Down, unless your device’s manufacturer specifies a different method.
- Open Photos or Gallery and find the screenshot, often in the Screenshots folder.
- Tap Edit > Crop and choose an aspect ratio if you only need to alter the visible composition or shape.
- For exact pixel width and height, transfer the image to a desktop editor or use a reputable image-resizer that exposes width and height fields.
- Save as a copy and inspect the image details to confirm the exported dimensions.
Do not assume a crop preset has produced exact pixel values: an aspect ratio such as 16:9 describes shape, not a particular width and height.

iPhone and iPad: make a repeatable resize shortcut
Apple documents resizing an image as an example of a transformation an action in Shortcuts can perform. Available actions and their names can vary by iOS or iPadOS release.
- Open Shortcuts, create a shortcut, and add Select Photos.
- Add the image resize or transform action available on your device. Set the target width; leave height automatic when you want to preserve proportions.
- Add Save to Photo Album or Share as the output action.
- Run the shortcut on the screenshot, then inspect the resulting image’s dimensions.
Apple’s overview, Intro to how shortcuts work on iPhone and iPad, describes actions that transform information, including resizing an image. If your device does not expose the needed action or exact controls, use a desktop image editor for a predictable pixel target.
Choose dimensions without making the screenshot harder to use
Keep proportions when resizing
The aspect ratio is width divided by height. A 1600 × 900 image and an 800 × 450 image have the same ratio; one is a proportional downscale of the other. Locking the ratio prevents circles becoming ovals and text or UI controls looking stretched. Unlock it only when matching a fixed shape is more important than faithful geometry.
Crop when the composition is the problem
If the target is a different shape, cropping can remove unwanted margins or surrounding content before scaling. It cannot preserve every edge of the original and also fill a differently shaped frame. If all original content must remain visible, use a canvas with empty space instead of cropping.

Resample when exact pixel dimensions matter
Resampling changes pixel data. Use it when a website, document, or application requires a specific pixel width and height, then verify the saved file rather than relying on the editor’s preview. Upscaling cannot restore detail that was not captured; downscaling can make small text harder to read, so inspect labels and fine lines at the final size.
Do not confuse pixels with resolution metadata or file size
Pixel dimensions describe the image’s width and height in pixels. Resolution metadata, often expressed in pixels per inch, concerns print sizing and does not by itself add screen detail. File size in bytes is different again: dimensions, PNG/JPEG/WebP format, compression settings, and image content all affect it.
Set screenshot dimensions before capture when possible
If you are capturing a website and need a repeatable viewport, set the browser window or automation viewport before capture. The viewport can affect responsive layout, so changing it may produce a different page arrangement—not merely a scaled version of the same pixels. For a fixed final image size, capture at an appropriate viewport and then resize or crop the output as needed.
For screenshots published in Mozilla contributor documentation, Mozilla’s How to make screenshots says that, for loading times and accessibility, it is best to keep screenshots under 620 pixels in both height and width. Treat that as context-specific contributor guidance, not a universal image limit; follow the destination site’s current requirements.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a website screenshot at a known viewport, an API can capture it without opening a browser manually. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; see ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures a page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The API also accepts width and height parameters used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching straightforward; consult the documentation for supported parameters and output settings. Capture dimensions control the screenshot viewport, while resizing a saved image changes its pixels afterward. Those are related but not interchangeable operations.
Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor would accept them, and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

- The second dimension keeps changing. The aspect-ratio lock is on. This is expected for proportional resizing; turn it off only if distortion is acceptable, or crop/pad the image to fit.
- The exported image is not the requested size. Check whether you cropped rather than resampled, whether the editor displayed inches or another unit instead of pixels, and whether the export step preserved your edits. Reopen the saved file or inspect its image details.
- The screenshot looks stretched. Width and height were likely changed independently. Undo the resize, restore the original proportions, and crop or extend the canvas to handle any shape mismatch.
- Text became blurry or hard to read. Downscaling discarded pixels, or the source itself was too small. Capture again at a larger viewport or scale if possible, or use a smaller final image only when the text remains legible.
- The file is still large after resizing. Pixel count is only one factor. Export to a suitable format and adjust compression where available; compare quality at the intended display size.
- An Android editor has no width and height fields. Its crop tool may only set framing or aspect ratio. Use a resizer that explicitly supports pixel dimensions or edit the file on a computer.
Use Photoshop for repeatable or batch work
Photoshop’s Image Size controls include dimensions, Fit To, Constrain, Width, Height, Resolution, and Resample. That added control can help with repeatable settings, batch-oriented work, or resolution metadata. For a one-off screenshot resize, Paint or Preview generally provides the essential pixel and proportional-scaling controls without a more elaborate workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change screenshot dimensions without changing what is visible?
Yes, with proportional resizing or by adding canvas space. Cropping changes what remains visible, while stretching distorts the image.
Does changing the resolution number make a screenshot sharper?
No. Resolution metadata alone does not create pixel detail; sharpness depends on the captured pixels and how they are resampled.
What should I do if an exact-size image must retain all of its content?
Use proportional scaling and add canvas space to reach the target shape. Cropping loses content, and independent width and height changes distort it.
