“Cloudflare protects this website” means the site owner has put Cloudflare in front of the site as a security layer. Cloudflare has paused your request to check whether your browser and network look legitimate. The message does not mean Cloudflare owns the site, that your device is infected, or that you are proven to be an attacker.
Usually, waiting a few seconds, enabling JavaScript and cookies, and completing the normal browser check is enough. If the page loops or blocks you, the cause is often an extension, shared VPN or proxy, changing IP address, or a rule controlled by the website operator.
What the message means
Cloudflare is operating as a reverse proxy between your browser and the destination website. Before forwarding the request, it may display an interstitial Challenge Page—a full-page gate that verifies the authenticity of the visitor.
The check evaluates browser and network signals. It may complete automatically or ask you to click a checkbox or button. Cloudflare describes challenges as protection against malicious activity such as bot attacks and DDoS attempts, but a challenge is a risk signal, not proof that you did anything wrong.

What Cloudflare is checking
- Whether JavaScript runs normally in the browser.
- Whether cookies can be stored, including the
cf_clearancecookie after a successful check. - Signals associated with automated browsers or modified browser APIs.
- The reputation of your IP address, autonomous system and network.
- Rules configured by the website owner.
Why you are seeing a Cloudflare challenge
The exact trigger belongs to the site’s configuration. Common sources include:
- A high threat score or poor IP reputation.
- Bot Management or Bot Fight Mode detecting bot-like traffic.
- A custom Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule.
- Rate limiting or an IP access rule.
- Browser Integrity Check.
- Turnstile or another embedded verification.
- HTTP DDoS protection.
- Under Attack mode, which adds checks during suspected layer-7 DDoS activity.
Under Attack mode temporarily pauses access and presents a browser check designed to decide whether to allow or block the request within about five seconds. That timing is a product-behavior description, not a guarantee that every visitor will pass.
How to get past the verification
- Wait for the check. Do not refresh repeatedly. A normal non-interactive challenge typically takes less than five seconds.
- Use a current mainstream browser. Internet Explorer is not supported. Try a current version of Chrome, Safari or Firefox.
- Enable JavaScript and cookies. The challenge needs browser-side JavaScript, and a successful solve may set
cf_clearance. - Temporarily disable interfering extensions. Pause ad blockers, privacy tools and script blockers for this site. Also test without software that changes the User-Agent, Canvas, WebGL or other browser APIs.
- Keep the same network while solving. A Managed Challenge can become invalid if the IP changes between receiving and completing it.
- Try a trusted alternate connection if necessary. Move from a shared VPN or corporate proxy to ordinary home broadband or a mobile hotspot. Shared addresses can have poor reputation and trigger challenges.
- Return to the original URL. Once the check succeeds, reload the destination rather than repeatedly opening new challenge tabs.
When the challenge keeps looping
JavaScript or cookies are blocked
Check the browser’s site permissions, content-blocking mode and private-browsing restrictions. Permit JavaScript and first-party cookies for the destination, then start a fresh tab and retry.
An extension changes browser signals
Use a clean browser profile or a private window with extensions disabled. If that works, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict.

Disconnecting from a VPN, moving between Wi-Fi and cellular data, or using an unstable corporate gateway can invalidate the solve. Stay on one connection until the page loads.

The network address has a poor reputation
Shared VPN exits, hosting networks and corporate proxies may be challenged more often. A trusted residential or mobile connection is a useful diagnostic, but buying a VPN is not a general fix.
The site rule is too strict or misconfigured
Only the website operator can change its WAF, bot, rate-limit, IP or Under Attack settings. If every compatible browser and network fails, contact the operator rather than trying to defeat the check.
What to send the website operator
Include enough detail for the operator to find the request:
- The exact Cloudflare error or challenge message.
- The Cloudflare Ray ID shown on the page.
- The complete URL you tried to open.
- The UTC date and time.
- Your browser name and version.
- Whether you were using home broadband, mobile data, a VPN or a corporate proxy.
- A screenshot, if it does not expose private information.
A Ray ID is an identifier assigned to every request that passes through Cloudflare. It is commonly displayed on the error page, appears as the cf-ray response/request identifier in diagnostic tools, and can be observed with verbose cURL output. Site operators can search Ray IDs in Security Events for associated IP, User-Agent and ASN information, although sampled logs may not contain every event.
Is Cloudflare blocking your IP?
Possibly, but a challenge is not the same as a permanent IP ban. Cloudflare may be reacting to reputation, traffic volume, a WAF expression, a rate limit or a temporary Under Attack setting. A successful challenge can grant clearance for subsequent requests, while a block page indicates that the configured rule decided not to allow the request.

Why API requests fail on a challenge page
A browser can execute JavaScript and display an interaction. A program expecting JSON, an image or another non-HTML response cannot use a full-page challenge as a substitute response. Cloudflare documents that challenge HTML can therefore break API or fetch requests. For APIs, the site owner must design an appropriate flow, such as Turnstile pre-clearance, rather than expecting clients to solve an interstitial.

A clearance cookie can prevent repeat checks for a period, but its presence and lifetime depend on the site’s configuration.

What not to assume
- The warning does not prove your computer is infected.
- It does not prove you are attacking the website.
- Cloudflare is not the site owner; the destination operator controls the security settings.
- A VPN is not automatically safer for reaching a challenged site.
- Refreshing rapidly, switching IPs or disabling all browser security indiscriminately can make diagnosis harder.

If you are collecting evidence for an incident report, save the visible message, Ray ID, URL and UTC time. Do not attempt to bypass a challenge you do not control.
