Press Shift-Command-5 for the Screenshot app, where you can choose a timer, destination, thumbnail behavior, and pointer visibility. These built-in tools capture what is visible on your display; they do not automatically create an image of a long webpage extending below the viewport.
This guide explains each method, how to copy or relocate the file, what to do when you need the entire page, and the limits that vary by macOS version and app.
Choose the right Mac screenshot method

Apple documents these shortcuts and options in its Mac screenshot instructions. Keyboard shortcuts can be changed in Keyboard settings; Apple’s shortcut reference covers customization.
Capture the whole screen
- Open the website and arrange the display exactly as you want it.
- Press and release Shift-Command-3.
- Wait for the floating thumbnail, if enabled. Click it to mark up or edit the image; otherwise the file is saved automatically.
macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default. The capture includes every visible display area, so a second monitor or a notification shown at the moment of capture may also appear. Use the selected-area or window method when you need a cleaner browser-only image.

Capture a selected part of a webpage
- Press and release Shift-Command-4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Drag from one corner of the desired page area to the opposite corner, then release.
- Press Esc before releasing if you want to cancel.
While dragging, hold Space to move the selection box without changing its dimensions. This is useful when the box is the right size but started in the wrong place. The method captures only the pixels currently visible; scroll first if you need a different section.
Capture a browser window or menu
- Bring the target browser window to the front. Open a menu if the menu itself is what you need to show.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then press and release Space.
- Move the camera pointer over the window or menu and click.
Hold Option while clicking if you want to omit the window shadow. Window capture is usually preferable to full-screen capture because it excludes other applications and the desktop while preserving the browser frame and visible page.
Use the Screenshot app for a timer and destination
- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Choose capture entire screen, capture a window, or capture a selected portion from the toolbar.
- Open Options and select a timer, save location, floating-thumbnail preference, and whether the pointer appears.
- Choose Capture or use the corresponding toolbar control.
The timer gives you time to open a hover menu, dismiss a transient notification, or position a page before capture. Changing the destination prevents the desktop from filling with images; available destinations depend on the macOS release and your account permissions.
Save somewhere else or copy to the clipboard
Change the default folder
Press Shift-Command-5, choose Options, and select a destination such as Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, or another available location. The setting applies to later Screenshot-app captures until you change it.

Copy without creating a file
Add Control to a shortcut. For example, Control-Shift-Command-3 captures the whole screen directly to the clipboard. You can then paste it into an email, document, image editor, or chat. You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard.
Visible screen versus an entire webpage
A screenshot is a raster image of the display, selection, or window at one moment. If a page is longer than the browser viewport, the standard shortcuts do not stitch the scrolled sections into one tall image. Capture successive sections manually, use a browser extension designed for full-page images, or use a server-side capture service.
If your goal is preservation rather than an image, Safari has a different workflow: choose File > Save As, then select Web Archive or Page Source. Apple explains this in its Safari webpage-saving guide. A Web Archive stores webpage graphics and links while destination pages remain available; Page Source stores HTML. Neither is a screenshot, and some pages may prevent saving displayed items.

Apple says the Screenshot app has been available since macOS Mojave 10.14. On older systems, the keyboard shortcuts still provide the core screen, selection, and window captures, but the toolbar and its options may differ.

PNG, HEIF, and HDR
On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot offers SDR (Most Compatible) capture as PNG or HDR capture as HEIF. Apple does not say these choices are available on every Mac, so use the formats shown on your own system. PNG is broadly compatible; HEIF can preserve HDR information but may require conversion for older software.
Protected windows
Some applications, including Apple TV, may not allow their windows to be captured. A black, blank, or missing result can therefore be an application restriction rather than a broken shortcut.
Practical workflow for a clean website image
- Close unrelated tabs and notifications, then set the browser zoom and window size.
- Scroll to the exact section you want and wait for images or fonts to finish loading.
- Use window capture for a browser-only image, or selected-area capture to remove browser chrome.
- Open the thumbnail immediately if you need markup, cropping, or sharing.
- Check the resulting file at 100% zoom for clipped text, lazy-loaded images, or a consent dialog that appeared during capture.
Cookie banners, newsletter prompts, chat bubbles, and ad overlays are part of the visible page. Dismiss them before capturing when the site permits it; otherwise select an area that excludes them.
Troubleshooting Mac website screenshots
The shortcut does nothing
- Confirm you are pressing Command, not Control, as the main modifier.
- Try Shift-Command-5 to see whether the Screenshot toolbar opens.
- Check System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots and restore or customize the bindings.
The image is saved but you cannot find it
Look on the desktop first. Then open Shift-Command-5 > Options to see the selected save destination. If you used Control, look in the clipboard by pasting into an app rather than searching for a file.

Repeat window capture and hold Option as you click the window. Alternatively, capture a selection inside the page so the browser frame and shadow are excluded.

The page is cut off
This is expected when the requested content is below the viewport. Scroll and capture additional sections, save the page as a Web Archive for preservation, or use a full-page capture tool. A normal Mac screen shortcut cannot infer and render all off-screen content.
A menu closes before capture
Use the Screenshot app timer, or open the menu first and invoke the window/menu sequence carefully. The timer is available under Shift-Command-5 > Options.
The result is black or blank
Check whether the application blocks screenshots, as Apple notes for some apps such as Apple TV. For a normal webpage, reload, wait for the page to finish rendering, and try window or selected-area capture again.
