The manual method works for custom and unpublished servers. After saving a valid configuration, completely restart Claude Desktop and check that the server’s tools are available.
This guide covers both routes, platform-specific file locations, a working filesystem example, direct server testing, permissions, logs, and the important difference between local servers and remote MCP services.
What MCP does in Claude Desktop
Anthropic describes the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as “an open protocol that enables seamless integration between LLM applications and external data sources and tools.” In Claude Desktop, a local MCP server is a program that Claude launches on your computer. The program exposes tools or resources; Claude can then call those tools during a conversation.
The configuration belongs to Claude Desktop, not to a normal Claude web conversation. A server must be installed on the computer, executable by your user account, and described with the command and arguments Claude should launch.

Choose an installation route
| Route | Best for | What you control | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop Extensions | Packaged servers listed in Claude’s directory | Installation and management through Claude’s interface | The directory is still being built (Anthropic’s June 30, 2026 guidance), so not every server is available |
| Manual JSON | Custom, private, unpublished, or locally developed servers | Exact command, arguments, paths, and permissions | You must maintain valid JSON and troubleshoot the process yourself |
Use Extensions when the server you need is listed and you want the shortest setup. Use JSON when you need a particular package version, a local executable, custom arguments, or a server that has no packaged extension. For teams, JSON also makes the launch command explicit and reviewable, although machine-specific paths still need to be documented.
Route 1: install a server with Desktop Extensions
- Open Claude Desktop.
- Open Settings.
- Select Extensions.
- Choose Browse extensions.
- Find the MCP server you want and select Install.
- Follow any permission prompts shown by the extension.
- Restart Claude Desktop if requested, then open a chat and check the available tools.
Extensions are a single-click management path for local MCP servers, but availability depends on whether the server author has supplied a packaged extension accepted by the directory. If the server is missing, use the manual configuration route instead.
Extension logs
When an extension installs but its tools do not appear, open its extension settings and inspect the extension logs. The MCP debugging guidance and Claude’s own logs are the first evidence to collect before changing settings. An extension can fail because its package cannot start, a dependency is unavailable, or a requested permission was denied.
Route 2: configure claude_desktop_config.json manually
1. Install the server’s prerequisites
Read the server’s documentation first. A Node-based server may require Node.js and use npx; a Python server may require a documented Python runner and virtual environment. Install the exact package and runtime the server specifies. Do not substitute a similarly named package without checking its instructions.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
2. Find the configuration file
| Platform | Configuration path |
|---|---|
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json |
| Linux | ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json |
| Windows | %APPDATA%Claudeclaude_desktop_config.json |
If the file does not exist, create it with that exact filename. The containing directory may already exist after Claude Desktop has run once; if not, create the directory first. Close Claude Desktop before editing so it cannot overwrite a change while you work.
3. Add a server under mcpServers
The top-level key must be exactly mcpServers. Each property below it is a name you choose for the server. The following filesystem example follows the official quickstart command pattern and grants access only to two directories:
{
"mcpServers": {
"filesystem": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem",
"/Users/username/Desktop",
"/Users/username/Downloads"
]
}
}
}
Replace the example directories with real paths on your computer and replace the package details when using another server. On Windows, use the Windows-style paths required by the server documentation, for example C:Usersyour-nameDesktop. JSON requires escaping backslashes as \, so a Windows value in the file commonly looks like "C:\Users\your-name\Desktop".
4. Add more than one server
Put additional named objects beside filesystem, separated by commas:

{
"mcpServers": {
"filesystem": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/Users/username/Desktop"]
},
"another-server": {
"command": "your-command",
"args": ["your-argument"]
}
}
}
Keep each server name unique. Grant every server only the directories, files, or other resources it actually needs. A broad path such as an entire home directory gives a filesystem server more access than most tasks require.
5. Validate and restart
- Check that the file is valid JSON: property names and string values need double quotes; do not leave a trailing comma.
- Save the file.
- Fully quit Claude Desktop, not just the chat window, and start it again.
- Open a conversation and look for the MCP tools or the MCP-related interface elements. Claude Desktop’s MCP UI appears when at least one server is properly configured.
If no MCP interface appears at all, treat that as a configuration discovery problem first: verify the path, filename, JSON syntax, and presence of at least one child under mcpServers.
Test the server outside Claude Desktop
When startup fails, run the exact command represented by command and args in a terminal. This separates a server problem from a Claude configuration problem.
- Copy the command and arguments from the JSON entry.
- Run them from a terminal using the same user account that runs Claude Desktop.
- Read the complete standard error and standard output.
- Fix missing runtimes, package names, permissions, or paths, then run the command again.
- Only after the command starts successfully should you return to Claude Desktop and restart it.
For an npx entry, the equivalent terminal command is the executable followed by every item in args, for example npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem /Users/username/Desktop /Users/username/Downloads. The server may remain waiting for MCP input; that can be normal. An immediate exit with an error is not.

Where to find Claude Desktop logs
| Platform | Claude log directory |
|---|---|
| macOS | ~/Library/Logs/Claude |
| Windows | %APPDATA%Claudelogs |
Use the logs after reproducing the problem, so the newest entries describe the failed launch. For Desktop Extensions, inspect the extension’s own logs as well. Record the server name, the launch error, and the time of the failed restart; that makes a package or permission issue easier to identify.
Local servers and remote MCP services are different
A local claude_desktop_config.json entry tells Claude Desktop to launch a process on your machine. It is not a general-purpose remote-server connection field. Anthropic states that Claude Desktop does not connect to remote servers configured directly through this file. If a service runs elsewhere, use the supported remote connector mechanism for that service rather than placing a remote URL in the local JSON file.
This distinction matters for authentication, networking, and troubleshooting. A local server can fail because a command is missing or a local path is inaccessible. A remote connector has a different setup, transport, and authorization flow; mixing the two produces a configuration that may parse but cannot launch anything.
Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No MCP tools or MCP UI | Wrong file path, invalid JSON, missing mcpServers, or Claude was not restarted |
Recheck the platform path and filename, validate JSON, confirm at least one server object, then fully quit and reopen Claude Desktop |
| Server exits immediately | Missing runtime, bad package name, invalid argument, or an error hidden in the GUI | Run the exact command manually and read stderr before editing more settings |
| Filesystem access denied | The directory does not exist or the process lacks permission | Verify the path, grant the operating-system permission requested, and pass only an accessible directory |
| Windows paths behave incorrectly | Unescaped backslashes in JSON | Use doubled backslashes in JSON strings, or use the path format documented by the server |
| Extension installed but has no tools | Extension startup or permission failure | Review extension logs, then Claude logs, and follow the extension’s troubleshooting instructions |
| Remote URL does not work in the JSON file | Local launch configuration is being used for a remote service | Move the setup to Claude’s supported remote connector mechanism |
Security and maintenance practices
- Use least privilege: pass only the directories or resources required for the task.
- Review commands before installation: the command and every argument define what Claude can launch and what data the server can reach.
- Keep paths portable in teams: document the macOS, Linux, and Windows variants separately; user-specific paths such as
/Users/usernamewill not transfer unchanged. - Pin changes deliberately: if a server’s package or runtime changes, test the command manually before distributing an updated configuration.
- Keep a known-good copy: save a backup of the last working JSON file before changing several servers at once.
- Diagnose in order: syntax and path first, direct command execution second, Claude restart third, and logs throughout.
Or skip the browser setup
If your reason for adding an MCP server is to let Claude or another AI workflow capture website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts the URL and capture options without requiring you to maintain a browser automation process. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete parameter reference.

FAQ
Can I rename the server key?
Yes. The key under mcpServers is a local label, so you can choose a descriptive name. Keep it unique and leave the command and arguments in the format required by the server.
Why does the Extensions directory not contain my server?
Only servers with a packaged Desktop Extension are available there, and the directory is still being built. An unlisted server can still be installed with manual JSON configuration.
