Yes—you can capture any number of portfolio homepages automatically. The dependable pattern is to keep a URL list, use Playwright to open each page at an explicitly chosen viewport, capture the viewport, full page, or a selected element, and save files with stable names. For scheduled or larger batches, a hosted service can remove browser maintenance. This guide builds the local workflow first, then shows when ScreenshotNeo is a better fit.
Choose what each screenshot should contain
Before writing code, define the capture scope. A screenshot is only useful when every page is captured for the same purpose.
Viewport screenshot
A viewport image records what fits in the visible browser window. It is useful for a portfolio gallery, social preview, or a consistent “first screen” review. It does not show content below the fold.
Full-page screenshot
A full-page image covers the page’s scrollable height. It is useful for documenting an entire case-study homepage, but very long pages can produce large image files and may expose content that loads only after scrolling.

Element screenshot
An element image isolates a component such as a hero, navigation bar, project card, or testimonial. You identify it with a CSS selector and capture only its bounding box.
Playwright documents all three scopes, along with saving to a file or returning image bytes for further processing: Playwright Screenshots documentation.
Prepare a repeatable capture plan
- URL list: store one canonical URL per line or in a JavaScript array. Use stable, production URLs rather than links that change between sessions.
- Viewports: choose widths that match your review—for example, one desktop and one mobile width. These are deliberate choices, not universal responsive-design standards.
- State: decide whether cookie dialogs, animations, logged-in content, or lazy images should be present. Keep the state the same for every run.
- Names: derive descriptive filenames from the site or project slug, and include the viewport when you capture more than one size.
- Environment: use the same browser version, operating system, settings, hardware conditions, and headless mode whenever screenshots will be compared.
Install Playwright and create a batch script
The following Node.js example captures every URL at two selected viewport widths. It writes both a viewport image and a full-page image for each page, waits for the page to reach a usable state, and continues to the next URL if one page fails.
- Install Node.js, create a directory, and initialize it:
mkdir portfolio-shots cd portfolio-shots npm init -y npm install playwright npx playwright install chromium - Create
capture.js:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const fs = require('fs/promises');
const urls = [
'https://example.com/',
'https://example.org/portfolio'
];
const viewports = [
{ name: 'desktop', width: 1440, height: 900 },
{ name: 'mobile', width: 390, height: 844 }
];
function slugFromUrl(rawUrl) {
const u = new URL(rawUrl);
const value = `${u.hostname}${u.pathname}`
.replace(/[^a-z0-9]+/gi, '-')
.replace(/^-|-$/g, '')
.toLowerCase();
return value || 'page';
}
(async () => {
await fs.mkdir('shots', { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
for (const rawUrl of urls) {
const slug = slugFromUrl(rawUrl);
for (const viewport of viewports) {
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: viewport.width, height: viewport.height },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
const page = await context.newPage();
try {
await page.goto(rawUrl, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({
path: `shots/${slug}-${viewport.name}-viewport.png`,
fullPage: false
});
await page.screenshot({
path: `shots/${slug}-${viewport.name}-full.png`,
fullPage: true
});
console.log(`Captured ${rawUrl} (${viewport.name})`);
} catch (error) {
console.error(`Failed ${rawUrl} (${viewport.name}): ${error.message}`);
} finally {
await context.close();
}
}
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Run it with:
node capture.js
The output directory contains deterministic names such as example-com-desktop-viewport.png. Playwright’s basic file form is page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }); setting fullPage: true changes the scope to the complete scrollable page.
Capture one element instead of the whole page
Use a selector that exists on every target page, or maintain a per-site selector map when portfolio designs differ.
const card = page.locator('[data-testid="featured-project"]');
await card.waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 15000 });
await card.screenshot({ path: `shots/${slug}-featured-project.png` });
A stable data-testid is less fragile than a long chain of classes. If the selector is missing, log the URL and save a diagnostic page screenshot rather than silently producing an empty result.

Make rendering predictable
Wait for the right condition
networkidle can be appropriate for pages that finish loading network resources, but analytics, live chat, or streaming requests may prevent it from becoming idle. In that case, wait for a known selector or use a bounded delay:
await page.goto(rawUrl, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 20000 });
await page.waitForTimeout(1000);
Use a selector wait when possible; a delay is a fallback for animation or late content and should be kept as short as your pages allow.
Account for lazy-loaded images
Full-page captures may include images that load only as they enter the viewport. Scroll through the document before capturing when the page requires it:
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await new Promise(resolve => {
let y = 0;
const step = 600;
const timer = setInterval(() => {
window.scrollBy(0, step);
y += step;
if (y >= document.body.scrollHeight) {
clearInterval(timer);
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
resolve();
}
}, 100);
});
});
Test this behavior on your own pages; some sites use intersection observers or custom loading logic that needs a page-specific trigger.
Control animations and dynamic data
Animated banners, rotating testimonials, timestamps, ads, and personalized content can change pixels between runs. Disable or hide those elements with page CSS, wait for a stable state, or capture a defined component instead of the entire page.
Playwright warns that output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep baseline generation and later comparisons in the same environment when visual consistency matters: Playwright visual comparisons documentation.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('portfolio homepage is unchanged', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('portfolio-home.png', { fullPage: true });
});
toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive page screenshots match before comparing with the expectation. Review intentional changes before accepting updated baselines. Do not treat one viewport as proof that every responsive layout is unchanged; define separate tests for the widths you actually support.
Process failures without losing the batch
A production batch should record failures and continue, while still returning a non-success status for monitoring. Add a results array and write it as JSON:
const results = [];
// after each attempt:
results.push({ url: rawUrl, viewport: viewport.name, ok: true });
// in catch:
results.push({ url: rawUrl, viewport: viewport.name, ok: false, error: error.message });
// before exit:
await fs.writeFile('shots/results.json', JSON.stringify(results, null, 2));
For scheduled jobs, retain the URL, viewport, timestamp, error message, and output path. This makes a timeout distinguishable from a selector problem or an authentication failure.
Local Playwright or a hosted capture service?
| Consideration | Local Playwright | Hosted screenshot service |
|---|---|---|
| Browser operation | You install, update, and run the browser. | The provider operates the capture infrastructure. |
| Control | Direct access to page code, selectors, scripts, cookies, and custom logic. | Control depends on the provider’s documented options. |
| Scaling | You manage concurrency, queues, scheduling, and browser resources. | Batch and asynchronous features may reduce your operational work; verify current limits. |
| Output | Files or image buffers that your code can process. | Usually an HTTP response or job result; check format and retention rules. |
| Maintenance | You own browser-version and environment consistency. | You trade that maintenance for provider dependency and API cost. |
There is no evidence-based universal page count at which one approach becomes cheaper. Decide from frequency, concurrency, network access, compliance requirements, and who will maintain the browser runtime.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a hosted website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is the first service to try when you want managed portfolio batches because it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; and its MCP tools let Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Basic cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The same endpoint accepts options for full-page capture, CSS-element selection, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`${res.status} ${res.statusText}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
Every response identifies the page result and billing outcome with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. That lets a batch job distinguish a clean capture from a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit before storing it as a valid portfolio image.

Navigation times out
Cause: a slow origin, an endless third-party request, or an overly strict wait condition. Increase the bounded timeout, switch from networkidle to domcontentloaded, then wait for a page-specific selector.
The image is blank or incomplete
Cause: the screenshot ran before the main content or lazy images appeared. Wait for a visible content selector, scroll to trigger lazy loading, and verify that the page does not require authentication or a bot challenge.
A selector cannot be found
Cause: responsive markup, a changed class name, an iframe, or a component rendered later. Prefer a stable test attribute, wait for it, and inspect the page at the same viewport used by the script. Content inside an iframe requires selecting the appropriate frame first.

The batch is too slow
Cause: opening a new browser for every URL or capturing unnecessarily large full pages. Reuse one browser, limit concurrency to what the host can handle, capture only the required scope, and use caching or a hosted batch endpoint when appropriate.
Operational and cost notes
- Viewport size, full-page height, device scale, waits, scripts, and blocked resources all affect runtime and output size.
- Keep credentials out of source files; load them from environment variables or a secret manager.
- Respect site access rules and obtain permission before capturing private or authenticated portfolio content.
- Store only the images and metadata you need, especially when pages contain personal information.
- For visual regression, review pixel differences as a human: a changed timestamp or intentional redesign is not automatically a defect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture several portfolio URLs in one run?
Yes. Put the URLs in the script’s array (or an input file), loop over them, and give each result a URL-derived filename. The example continues after an individual failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould I use PNG, JPEG, or WebP?
Choose the format required by your publishing or review pipeline. Playwright can write screenshots to files or return bytes; ScreenshotNeo can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.
How do I prove a page is responsive?
Capture the specific viewport widths your audience uses and compare each separately. One desktop image cannot establish behavior at other widths.
What should I do with pages that require login?
Use an authorized test account and supply the session state or credentials securely. Never place passwords in a committed script or expose private page captures.
